The building is on fire.
That’s it. I’m not Shakespeare, and I’d rather keep descriptions easy to understand. Anyways, there are tons of people screaming for help, a little stressful but that’s just one thing compared to other missions I have. All suited up, I swooped into the building and saved as many people as I could.
I know, I’m great at being a superhero. Your superpowers and your attitude, as well as a little bit of charisma is what you need. I check all these boxes easily.
Tl;dr, I can fly, is super strong and durable and can control fire, and another secret one that is really cool when combined with fire. Like a dragon. Name’s Raihan by the way. Captain Dragon’s my alter ego or something?
Well, speaking of that building fire, it was caused by someone trying to burn it down just to rob a jewellery store. Managed to knock him out and locked up in jail before he could touch a single necklace. Lots of people were grateful for me, of course. I saved their lives. How could they not be?
Suddenly, my phone rang in an extremely obnoxious tone
"This better not be another fucking spam call," I said, as I checked my phone…
It wasn’t a spam call, but rather from Sonia… Haha… well… uhh… Long story short, some khia ass criminal broke out of jail for about the 20th time this year… Jeez, they should really do something about security. Though to be fair, he hooked himself up on steroids. Tons of steroids. All the time.
He’s just another regular criminal, not a full-fledged supervillain anyways, so might as well fill you in on how I got my superpowers. Otherwise this chapter would be over and that would kinda be a shame anyways.
For a little bit of context, my dad entrusted me with a little necklace that looked like a dragon’s tooth, when I was seven. He told me to harness its power when the time is right. Not sure what he meant by it, and honestly a bit confused. Fast forward five years later, I could hear it calling me when I sleep. Calling me to scratch it. Incredibly frustrating.
Leon’s always been talking about it… the legends, the myths, everything! Speaking of him, he’s secretly a demigod sent down to fufill some prophecy about a "great evil"… if words don’t convince you, he’s literally outright shown me his superpowers, and oh boy, there’s tons and tons of them! That’s how he knows what secrets my necklace held.
He always tells me to scratch it whenever I desperately need to.
Anyways, it was a January morning, just visiting my mom in the hospital room because she’s about to be giving birth to my baby brother! I’m so excited! Well, he was technically born five days afterwards, but who cares, as her son I have to visit her.
Little did I know, that would be the day everything changes. Ok, so there was this villain named the Golden Magnet, who had powers of magnetism, duh. Had been terrorising the entire London streets for God knows why, and he was about to go straight for the hospital. This might be bad… I stare at the hospital TV screen watching the news of the entire streets of London failing to stop Golden Magnet in his crime/violence spree. The sirens of police cars blared louder than a smoke alarm in a burning house…
And there we were, afraid and hopeless.
For the context, superheroes had existed then… not as much as now, but yeah. One of them was Firebrand, who just so happened to be my then-favourite superhero. My primary school locker had a special section dedicated to him. He was fighting hard against Golden Magnet, which started to worry me a little… Firebrand’s this formidable, so lasting that long in a fight is already impressive in my standards… Suddenly,
BANG!
A piece of stray metal aimed at Firebrand landed right in the hospital. Lights were out. Everyone was panicking. The voice in my head started blaring louder, and so was Leon’s piece of advice.
"Scratch it"
I tried my best to resist it, as well as dodge every single missed attack that damn Magnet had on the hospital. Suddenly, the fight entered the hospital as if nothing had happened. Chaos was everywhere, making me start to lose my mind, just like that intrusive thought to scratch that damn necklace.
I fidgeted with my hands way too much… so much so that I actually done what I avoided doing so for five consecutive years.
"Oh no…"
Suddenly, the necklace started to dissolve into a bright light. Scared, I rushed to the toilets, in an effort to hide whatever the fuck is going on. Before long, I could feel myself floating into heaven, as the necklace probably dissolved into a million bits and somehow fused into my body.
And if that was weird, what happened next would probably blow your mind. Nothing happened. I wasn’t put into a deep sleep or had those spiritual epiphanies like that one from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I just returned to the exact same spot I levitated… my necklace was gone.
"Where is it?"
I panicked as I tried to feel for my necklace, before floating five inches above the ground. Surprised, I just floated in air awkwardly like a ghost. It felt a lot like Creative Mode, except you’re constantly stretched and you don’t have infinite blocks to build. Huh, maybe that’s why Leon and that voice told me to scratch the necklace… it had those weird superpowers all along.
But I can’t let anyone know about them… except maybe Leon. I quickly hid myself with a spare jacket I had in my bag, hiding my face as much as I could, flying out of my hiding spot and probably into battle… well, I just swooped in headfirst into Golden Magnet in a surprise attack. Thrown off-guard, he tripped and fell to the ground, with Firebrand looking at me, shocked. Couldn’t really remember what he said. IT WAS FOURTEEN YEARS AGO, OK?
Soon, that dickhead Magnet just straight up snatched my phone away with his magnetic powers, and crushed it. My baby… and all my data and precious selfies… all gone within one smash. Angered, I charged up some fire attack similar to Firebrand’s, surprising everyone… including me.
"First time humiliated by a kid?", I smugly said, ready to handle whatever attacks Golden Magnet had against me.
Soon, the entire hospital became a makeshift Colosseum, as that dumb bitch that broke my phone and I exchanged punches… I could feel them being twenty times stronger than they used to one day ago… but to no avail. The Magnet was somehow able to attract lots of metal to throw me off, damaging my jacket. I was only able to claw off at least a bit of his giant magnet… then it hit me.
They aren’t real magnets, they’re just mere electromagnets! If only I could somehow disable them, I could strip him off his magnetic powers… well, I could still remember Firebrand telling me about my ability to "control the elements"
"WHAT?!", I responded back, a little confused… before taking a deep breath and further attacking that bare crack in the magnet, trying to cut off at least a bit of that wire. Suddenly, a purple plasma-like aura glowed around my hands, forming a dragon’s claw. Trying to dig deeper into the magnet, I scratched it as hard as I could, dealing a little bit more damage — Not before he could shove me off with another piece of stray metal.
OW— It was really painful, as I started to bleed in the head… but somehow able to think straight and retain at least a bit of my memories. Still not sure what the elements referred to, but I tried to release another fire attack… That should work.
Suddenly, electricity started swirling around my right hand. Not knowing whatever the heck is going on, I faced my right hand on Golden Magnet, who attempted to ready one of his magnetic attacks but failed… As soon as I closed my eyes, bracing for impact, ZAP! It just went flying onto his face, knocking him unconscious. I… somehow beat him. Everyone was cheering for me.
Well, after that long fight… my mom had to be transferred to another hospital. I talked about the whole fight with my mom… who was about to give birth to my younger brother! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see him.
I had to exit my mom’s room because waiting hours just had to end at 10pm… Just as I was about to take my leave, an old man, with Leon in tow, decided to pick me up.
And… that’s about it! That’s how my life changed after some random fate that I had no complete control over.
