Work Text:
The sugary snow fell on the walls of the mighty Dark Cacao Kingdom. Above, on the heights that bars intruders, stood Caramel Arrow Cookie, her reliable blades in hand, ready for anyone that might dare to attack the kingdom. The First Watcher alertedly stared into the distance, her eyesight sharp as ever.
A bird flew overhead which caught the hawk-like eyes of the Watcher. A pigeon; an uncommon sight in the snowy plains of this part of Crispia.
“What could this mean?” She told herself. As vigilant as ever, she didn't lower her twin blades — she grips them tighter, thinking it could be a bad omen.
Hm? Who could that be? She thought when her eyes caught a caravan appearing in the distance. It doesn't seem to be from any of the tribes, so where could it be from? And unfamiliar Cookies were atop the horses, coming closer. I must interrogate whoever this may be.
Caramel Arrow Cookie went down, opening the gates to go and check on these supposed visitors.
A young Cookie with petal hued hair got down the horse as they reached the sturdy gates.
“Hello, dear friends,” His voice smooth as butter, he continued. “We are here to deliver some of the finest tea. It seems your king may have garnered some interest in tea-tasting? Heh.” He chuckled playfully.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie,” said a guard. “Is he permitted to enter?”
“I was made aware of a group of traders coming by to provide tea,” Caramel Arrow Cookie put her blades on her back and crossed her arms. “May I know your name?”
“Oh, right, my manners. I'm Camellia Cookie, from the Flower City’s Teahouse. May I know yours?”
“Caramel Arrow Cookie, First Watcher of the Dark Cacao Kingdom.”
“First Watcher? Quite the high-ranking title. I am honored, Caramel Arrow Cookie.”
“Thank you. But, before you may enter, I must confirm with the staff that you are, in fact, the group ordered to be sent here. I hope you understand.”
“Don't worry, it's completely understandable. Hopefully, I don't freeze in the cold before you're done.”
“Ha! I'll make it quick. Please wait here.” Caramel Arrow Cookie’s brow furrowed, then she entered the kingdom again, heading for the Citadel.
“Hello, Caramel Arrow Cookie,” said one of the staff of the Citadel. “Is there anything you need? Is it that important for you to leave your post?”
“Please, don't get it twisted, Choco Gelato Cookie. I am here to confirm an order for tea from the Flower City’s Teahouse. Is there such an order?”
The Cookie laughed, looking at Caramel Arrow Cookie with playfulness. “Aw, you remember my name. Yes, yes, I can confirm that there was an order placed — by the King himself, no less!”
“So, King Dark Cacao Cookie has placed the order himself? Quite interesting. N-Not to doubt His Majesty, of course!” Caramel Arrow Cookie cleared her throat, regaining her stalwart composure.
“Mhm, don't worry. It seems like when one of his advisors returned from his short voyage, he brought with him some tea that caught the Majesty's attention.”
“Is that so? I did hear of that advisor’s vacation.”
“You look like you could use a vacation yourself! You've been working so hard, guarding the Dark Cacao Kingdom day and night, yet you receive no rest besides in the mornings.”
“I am rather satisfied with my current position,” She said with determination. Just talking of her duties had made her passion flare up. “Protecting the Dark Cacao Kingdom is my life's purpose — I wouldn't trade it for anything.”
“It may seem like you're doing well, but overtime, it's going to wear out your dough,” Choco Gelato Cookie’s expression saddened. “You're young, Caramel Arrow Cookie. Take care of yourself, or else you won't be able to protect the kingdom for long!”
“...I appreciate the concern, but I mustn't keep Camellia Cookie waiting.”
“Camellia Cookie?” Choco Gelato Cookie’s eyes widened in curiosity. “Oh, what are they like?”
“Why is it that you're interested in him?” She asked, unaware of her intentions.
“Why? Are you?” She looked at her from the side.
“What do you mean by that?” Her brows furrowed.
She covered her mouth with her sleeve, looking sly. “Heh, nothing.”
“I see. Since I've already confirmed that this order is from the Flower City's Teahouse, I shall be on my way.” The Cookie turns around, ready to leave.
“Alrighty, then. Take care, okay? For me.”
“I will. Thank you.” She left the Citadel, making her way to the gates in a timely fashion.
“Ah, you're here. I was worried my dough would become snow.” Camellia Cookie teased.
“I'm sorry for the delay, I was distracted by other matters,” She bowed her head apologetically. “I have confirmed your delivery. Please, head inside.”
“Thank you.” He said before going back on the caravan. The horses shook their heads and huffed.
“Okay, c'mon.” said the caravan leader, making the horses move forward, bringing the goods with them.
“I will return to my post. Make sure you continue to diligently watch the gates.” She said sternly.
“Yes, Caramel Arrow Cookie!” The two guards said in unison. Caramel Arrow Cookie left and returned to the top of the walls, continuing to watch the snow-white plains.
In the Black Citadel, Camellia Cookie handed over the last batch of tea to the staff.
“This is it. I must leave now.” Camellia Cookie said.
“You know, Caramel Arrow Cookie mentioned you. I wonder, what is Flower City like?” said Choco Gelato Cookie.
“Oh, it's a fine city filled with lively citizens. The scent of flowers is sure to relax anyone that comes in.” Camellia Cookie seemed to enjoy talking about the city.
“Hm, that seems like the perfect place for Caramel Arrow Cookie to take her well-needed vacation, don't you think?”
“If she decides to, I wouldn't mind helping her tour the city.” He waved his brush.
“Oh, how kind of you. I shouldn't be keeping you for too long. Please, go ahead.”
“Thank you. I'll be on my way.”
There was a pause, which gave Choco Gelato Cookie an idea. “...Actually,” A smirk couldn't help but creep upon Choco Gelato Cookie’s face. “If you do not mind, please, wait here.”
“I don't mind at all if it's something important. Do you mind telling me what's the matter?”
“Not yet. It'll be but a moment,” She left, her smile growing wider. As soon as she arrived at the King’s throne, her smile lessened to a small curve. “Hello, my King. I have a request.”
“What is it?” Dark Cacao Cookie’s voice lightly trembled the ground.
“I hope you don't mind, but I've noticed that Caramel Arrow Cookie has been watching the kingdom for so long without breaks. I worry her dough will weaken due to her not taking better care of herself.” Choco Gelato Cookie’s expression sombered.
“And you are saying…?”
“I humbly request that she take a short vacation, just for a moment. I know that the kingdom needs constant watch for intruders, but peace has been upon us for long. Besides, if you may not be angered, we have enough guards and Watchers to aid in battle if need be.”
“Hm…” His Majesty closed his eyes in thought. “She has indeed been watching the kingdom for a long time. I do not wish to see my subjects crumble due to not being able to care for themselves because of their duties.”
“If I may ask, do you wish to seek her presence to discuss further?”
“If you may, bring her here.” He ordered.
“Yes, your Majesty.” She bowed her head and left the Citadel, going up the walls to bring Caramel Arrow Cookie to the King.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie~ His Majesty seeks your presence.”
Her attention immediately moved to Choco Gelato Cookie. “What could it be for?” She asked in worry.
“It’s important. You must hurry.”
“I will,” Thoughts raced in her mind. What could this be about? “Let's go.” The two hurried down the walls and made it to the King.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie.” Dark Cacao Cookie said as soon as they arrived.
“Yes, your Majesty?” Caramel Arrow Cookie bowed her head.
“Choco Gelato Cookie has told me about considering giving you a break from your duties, in order for you to be able to continue without being weakened over time.”
“Ah, your Majesty, it is not needed. I am completely fine with continuing to guard the kingdom. There is no need to trouble you with such matters.”
“Caramel Arrow Cookie, I deeply treasure you all as my subjects. I do not wish to see you fall in duty to my negligence of your needs. I order you to take a break.”
“Your Majesty!” Caramel Arrow Cookie nearly cried out, but returned to a respectful demeanor. “My King, you do not need to offer me a break.”
“This is an order.” Dark Cacao Cookie told her with strictness.
“...Yes, my King. I will follow your order.”
“You may leave now, you two.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” They both bowed before exiting the place.
“Choco Gelato Cookie, why did you tell the King to give me a break? I told you, there's no such need.” Caramel Arrow Cookie’s expression showed some annoyance.
“But His Majesty has already approved of your break! You definitely need it, trust me.” Choco Gelato Cookie looked happy about her actions.
Caramel Arrow Cookie’s brows turned upside. “If the King has told me I need a break, I shall take it. But… how should I spend it?”
“Oh, I have an idea. We mustn't keep him waiting any longer.”
A confused look plastered itself on her face. “Who is ‘he’?”
“You will see, hehe.” She began to walk away, with Caramel Arrow Cookie following behind.
“Ah, Choco Gelato Cookie. You're finally back. I was wondering what you were doing. Oh, and Miss Caramel Arrow Cookie is here too?” Camellia Cookie greeted.
“Yes, yes, I do apologize for the wait.” Choco Gelato Cookie replied.
“What are you going to do?” Caramel Arrow Cookie questioned.
“You will be heading to Flower City, alongside Sir Camellia Cookie here.”
“But why? I mustn't be too far from the kingdom, what if an attack—”
“You're thinking of your duties again! Remember what the King said? You must take a break.”
Caramel Arrow Cookie sighed. “Fine. I will head to Flower City. I assume I will be on the caravan alongside Camellia Cookie?”
“Mhm.” Choco Gelato Cookie smiled.
“Camellia Cookie, are you okay with this arrangement?” She asked.
“Well, I wouldn't mind more company.”
“I see. I must prepare my rations and outfit first.”
“Rations? Caramel Arrow Cookie, you're not going to war. Tsk, tsk.” She shook her head.
“Ah, I'm sorry, I mean… snacks. I need to prepare snacks and clothes.”
“I see. I hope you can wait a bit longer for Caramel Arrow to prepare her things. I shall head to my duties now.” Choco Gelato Cookie left them be, snickering lightly.
“If you don't mind, you'll have to wait a bit longer for me to prepare my ra— Ahem… I mean, my snacks.”
“Don't worry, I got that,” He replied. “I'll be waiting in the same place for you.”
“Okay, please wait a moment,” She left and headed to the barracks to prepare her items. Afterwards, she returned, holding a small bag. “I'm back. Shall we leave?”
“Let’s go.” They both head to the caravan. When they get on the horse, the caravan leader gets the horses moving, and they begin their journey to the Flower City.
Caramel Arrow Cookie silently checked her supplies once more, ensuring everything was there. On their way out of the snow adorned land, he asked,
“Say, Caramel Arrow Cookie, how is it like being the First Watcher of the Dark Cacao Kingdom?” He looked at her with interest.
“It’s quite fine. As the First Watcher, your sworn duty is to protect the kingdom from any incoming threats. With this bow, any enemies will never be a match for me.”
“You sound rather passionate about your duties. How noble.”
“Thank you. It was my dream as a young Cookie to become one of King Dark Cacao Cookie’s loyal warriors.”
“What a dream to have,” Camellia Cookie smiles. “Do you have any questions you wish to ask me?”
“Hm…” Caramel Arrow Cookie looked down, thinking of a question. “How about you? What was your dream as a young Cookie?”
“As a young child, I would dream of knowing everything there could be in the world. I was also an artist. I excelled in calligraphy and painting. Now, I am in charge of the Flower City's Teahouse and a trader.”
“That is interesting,” Caramel Arrow Cookie said. “May I see some of your work?”
“How about when we get to Flower City? I didn't bring any of them with me.”
“I see. It would make sense why you wouldn't bring them on your journey here.”
“Are you used to traveling?” Camellia Cookie asked. “Wanted to ask in case you may get motion sick.”
“Not to travel, but the wilderness. My soles have straws I have gathered in order to prevent myself from sinking in the deep snow.”
“How resourceful, aren't you?” Camellia Cookie looked to the side — they're still far from their destination, but it wasn't snowy anymore. He looked back at her. “Do you have any interest in any artistic endeavors?”
“I haven't been able to get a hobby since I watch the kingdom day and night. But even without one, I'm rather satisfied.”
“Perhaps I should teach you some techniques? Maybe you'll find joy in it.”
“Since I'm on break, it wouldn't hurt to try.”
“Wonderful.”
“How is it like to be a trader? I've seen some as a guard, but a small portion of them have been intruders.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes. However, I was still able to catch all of them before they got past the walls.”
“You're quite skilled. To answer your question, it's rather good. I get to learn more about other places and cultures through trading. As you see, every piece of information is invaluable.”
“It seems you really value knowledge.”
“Of course I do. It's always better to have more knowledge than not, no?”
“You're right.” She shifted her position.
As they continue their discussions, they arrive at the port.
Camellia Cookie and Caramel Arrow Cookie got down their respective horses.
“Where are we?” Caramel Arrow Cookie asked.
“We're at the port. Since Flower City is on another continent, we must go by airship.”
“I've never been on an airship before.”
“Don't worry. Ace Pilot Cookie is most likely our pilot. He's the best in the business.”
She looked at the intimidating size of the airship. “I see. If you put your trust in him, I will too.”
“Everyone!” shouted Ace Pilot Cookie. “Go on aboard. We'll be leaving in a couple minutes, so be quick!”
“Ah, just in time. Let's get on, Caramel Arrow Cookie.”
As they waited for the airship to set sail, they watched as other Cookies went aboard. Some familiar faces, some not. When the boarding had finished, they began to ride to the continent where Flower City resides.
“Are you afraid of heights? I would wager not.” Camellia Cookie asked.
“I've never been at this height before, but I'm not afraid. I've been atop mountains, so I could say I'm used to the height.” She replied.
“It must be dangerous to be on those mountains,” He said as he watched the mountains pass by them. “I heard that mountain lions are common there in that part of Crispia.”
“Yes they are, but I've been able to fend them off. I've also been able to tell a blizzard is coming just by their cries.”
“I'll keep that in mind if I ever visit again. That way, I wouldn't get swept away.”
“Do you ever plan to?”
“Heh, who knows? Maybe I do,” He chuckled. “May I know some things about those blades of yours?”
“They were given to me when I became the First Watcher of the kingdom. In fact, these blades can turn into a formidable bow.”
“A bow, you say? I didn't know they had such versatility.”
“They've made it easy to switch between close and ranged combat. I try to take care of them so they last as long as I live.”
“They don't seem to have a blemish at all. You've done a great job.”
“Thank you, I try my best. You also seem to be very observant.”
“There's some types of knowledge that can't be seen without observing, so it's an important skill I've developed.”
Caramel Arrow Cookie looked down the airship, watching the clear ocean. It reminded her of the Licorice Sea, what it could've been before all the monsters had taken over. Soon, land appeared, the ocean disappearing into the distance.
“Anything on your mind?” Camellia Cookie asked.
“No, I'm just taking in the landscape. Or rather, the oceanscape.”
“Ah, I see. It's fascinating seeing the life that lives under all that water.”
“I never got to think about that.”
“Right, your kingdom is right next to the Licorice Sea, isn't it? It seems that the only life that exists there are monsters.”
“Indeed. No matter how hard they try, I'll make sure they never touch any of my fellow Cookies.”
“Your determination is admirable. They're lucky to have someone as strong as you watching over them.”
“Alright, everyone!” They arrived. The airship lowered, finally landing, and the stairs appeared at the exit. “Off the ship! We've reached our destination.” Camellia Cookie helped Caramel Arrow Cookie down the airship.
“Thank you.” Caramel Arrow Cookie said as she got down.
“No problem. Now that we have arrived, you wouldn't mind a short tour, would you?”
“I wouldn't mind at all.”
“Ah, perfect. Let's head to the marketplace. Perhaps you'd like a souvenir?”
“I'm afraid I wouldn't have much coin to spare for a souvenir. I've only brought enough for food.”
“Don't worry, I'll pay for it.”
“Are you sure? I don't wish to burden you with something so simple.”
“I said don't worry about it, it won't burden me. In fact, I think a new outfit may be perfect to bring back.”
“A new outfit?!” Her eyes widened in surprise. “Please, that's too much.”
Camellia Cookie shook his head. “Seriously, don't worry about it. You deserve something nice for all the work you do in the kingdom as the First Watcher.”
“I truly do appreciate it, but—”
“Uh-uh, no buts. Let's go.” Camellia Cookie chuckled, and began to move towards the direction of the markets.
“...” Caramel Arrow Cookie felt surprised, unable to muster any more counters. She followed Camellia Cookie as they arrived at the marketplace.
“Hello, there, young lady. Would you like some jewelry to spice up your looks?” said a merchant.
“Buy some candy! Some delicious candy!” said another.
“These flowers were fought for against Cookievorous plants! Come and get ‘em!” and another.
“So many merchants…” Caramel Arrow Cookie commented.
“Of course. This is a marketplace, after all.” Camellia Cookie responded.
“Couples discount! Buy one get two! C'mon, c'mon!”
“The best deal of your life is over here! Come around and get it before it disappears!”
“Hm… Ah, there’s the tailory. Come on.” He sped up, and so did Caramel Arrow Cookie.
The bell rang as they pushed back the door, alerting the tailor who was focused on a piece of clothing stuck on a mannequin.
“Hello, hello!” The tailor said excitedly. “Oh Camellia Cookie? And who's this lady here?”
“I'm Caramel Arrow Cookie. We're here for an outfit.”
“Ah, I see. I'm Sunflower Seed Cookie! Have you placed an order?”
“No,” Camellia Cookie replied. “We wish to have an outfit made here.”
“Okay, okay! Just wait a moment! Just gotta finish this one up.” Sunflower Seed Cookie said before returning her attention to the piece of clothing.
“What type of clothing would you like?”
“I'm fine with anything as long as it's comfortable.”
“I see. I will forward that to the tailor.”
“Do you and the tailor know each other?”
“We have met a couple of times for some clothing fixes. We’re on friendly terms.”
“Are you well known around here?”
“I would say so, but I don't wish to be bragging.”
“It doesn't sound like bragging to me.”
“Ehe, how about we talk more about each other? We're still somewhat strangers, don't you agree?”
“Do you have any questions you want to ask?”
“What type of music do you listen to? Oftentimes, when I would be painting, I would listen to the tunes of nature, like the tweets of the birds and the rustling of leaves.”
“I don't often listen to music, if at all. I only have the tune of the wind to accompany me.”
“It seems we have something in common, heh.”
“Alrighty! I'm done!” Sunflower Seed Cookie gestures to Caramel Arrow Cookie to stand up. “I’m gonna take your measurements! Anything in particular you want about your outfit?”
“She wants it to be comfortable.” Camellia Cookie responded.
“Sure! All my clothes are always comfortable! Come here, I'll measure you.” The enthusiastic tailor measured her body, and wrote it down. They waited as she made her outfit in surprising speed.
“She's rather quick!” Caramel Arrow Cookie commented.
“Indeed. She's the best tailor I know.”
“You must know many, especially as you travel a lot, I presume.”
“Actually, I don't travel much. I prefer staying at home. I know many Cookies thanks to my pigeons.”
“Pigeons? I do remember seeing one back in the kingdom. Did you release one above it?”
“You noticed? What sharp eyesight.” Camellia Cookie pushed back his monocle.
“Thank you. But what was the purpose?”
“Perhaps you didn't see her holding a piece of paper. She was delivering a message to Dark Cacao Cookie. You see, my pigeons are couriers.”
“A message to the King? I see. If you dislike going out, why have you come to the Dark Cacao Kingdom in person?”
“I had… a feeling I should come along. I can't explain it,” Then, Camellia Cookie whispered, “And it seemed worth it in the end.”
“Sorry? I couldn't hear you.”
His cheeks turned a light red. “Sorry, it's nothing.”
“Hey! You two done talking?” The tailor pouted. “If you are, I'm gonna need you to try this dress on! The dressing room’s over there.”
“Ah, sorry. Please wait here.” Caramel Arrow Cookie said before taking the clothes from the hands of the tailor, going into the dressing room, putting them on. Camellia Cookie waited patiently.
As Caramel Arrow Cookie came out, Camellia Cookie couldn't help but be smitten.
A white and pink combination of colours is what her hanfu is made of, with golden patterns faintly resembling clouds. The colours surprisingly suit her black and brown hair, which was also styled to match the outfit.
“How do I look?” She asked Sunflower Seed Cookie, ignoring the staring from Camellia Cookie.
“Oh, you look gorgeous! And it seems you also made use of the hair accessories I've given! Fantastic! What do you think, Camellia Cookie?” The tailor turned to him. Flustered, he fixed his monocle.
“Ahem, you look… pretty, Miss Caramel Arrow Cookie.” He smiled.
Caramel Arrow Cookie smiled in return. “Thank you.”
“So, are you satisfied with the outfit?”
“Yes, and I'm also very impressed with your abilities and speed.”
“Aw, thanks! I've been doing this for quite a while now. So, who's paying?”
“I will be the one paying.” Camellia Cookie said.
“Are you sure?” Caramel Arrow Cookie asked.
“We did agree to this arrangement, did we not?”
“We did, but I still feel rather doubtful on whether I should make you pay.”
“It's fine, this won't make me break the bank. Here.” He paid the tailor, who put it in the cash register with glee.
“Hee, hee!” Sunflower Seed Cookie laughed with jubilation.
“Quite happy, are we?” Camellia Cookie chuckled.
“You two can leave now!” said the tailor.
“Let's leave, then.”
“Goodbye, Sunflower Seed Cookie.” Caramel Arrow Cookie said.
“Ta-ta!” The tailor waved them goodbye as they left.
“Where shall we head next?” She asked.
“Hm, we should go to the Teahouse. I did say I'd show you my works, didn't I?”
“Indeed, you did.”
“Alright, let's go.” They headed to the Teahouse. As they made their way there, Camellia Cookie introduced Caramel Arrow Cookie to the places in Flower City.
Camellia Cookie let Caramel Arrow Cookie inside the Teahouse before himself. As he entered, he closed the door, while Caramel Arrow Cookie looked around the place.
“This is quite the place, Camellia Cookie.” Caramel Arrow Cookie said.
“I appreciate the compliment. Make yourself at home. I'll be getting my works and a couple of art supplies to get you started.”
“I will wait here.” Camellia Cookie left the room as she sat down on one of the seats.
Camellia Cookie… That look on his face when he saw me in my outfit… Caramel Arrow Cookie thought. No, it must just be my imagination. The kingdom needs me, and I can't be distracted by such matters.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie, I've brought them.”
She snapped out of her trance. “Oh, Camellia Cookie.”
“It seems you were lost in thought. Are you okay?”
“It's fine. May you show me your works?”
“Here they are.” He showed her his skillful calligraphy and paintings, which awed Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“You are quite skillful. I am impressed.”
Camellia Cookie covered his mouth, his face lightly red. “Thank you, Caramel Arrow Cookie.”
“...You did say you'll teach me how to do calligraphy, remember?” Caramel Arrow Cookie reminded.
“Ah, yes. Here,” He brought out his tools, and laid them on the table. “Are you familiar with how to use a brush?”
“It must be simple, is it not?”
“Aha, that's what I see people say sometimes. But it's a lot harder than it looks,” He grabbed her hand. He paused, a sweat bead forming on his cheek. They looked at each other, Caramel Arrow Cookie in confusion, and Camellia in embarrassment. “Sorry.” He placed her hand on the brush. He dipped the brush on the inkstone, and began writing on the prepared paper. While showing her the difficulty of calligraphy, her arm grew tired.
“I see, I was mistaken,” When he let go of her hand, she stretched her arm, trying to ease the soreness. “I'm sorry for doubting the difficulty of such a skill.”
“It's okay, don't worry,” Camellia Cookie stood up, growing redder. “If you don't mind, I will prepare tea. Do you wish for some?”
“I don't mind, and yes, I would like some tea. I'm feeling a bit parched.” Camellia Cookie went to a room as she watched. She turned back to the paper, which had beautiful calligraphy now on it. She looked at the hand he held. It must be what I'm thinking, but why am I thinking such a thing?
Camellia Cookie returned with a tray of tea, two cups already filled. The fragrance filled the room, calming down the thoughts of the black-haired Cookie. He placed it on the table, beside the calligraphy tools.
“Here you go.” He lifted a cup and handed it to her.
“Thank you.” She bowed her head. She blew on the tea and drank it.
“How'd it taste?”
“This is quite delicious. Are you the one who brewed it?”
“Yes, I’ve brewed it myself. I'm glad you think so. Actually, this is the same tea His Majesty ordered.”
“The King ordered this? I can see why.”
“Haha, this tea originates from a far away land. It's hard to get these, so they're rather precious, like…” Camellia Cookie paused, catching the attention of Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Like…?”
“Like… gems from the deep soils of Earthbread. Sorry, I was just looking for the words.” He fixed his hair.
“Hm,” Caramel Arrow Cookie sighed. I must discuss this matter with him. “Camellia Cookie, I have something to discuss with you.”
His brows raised. “What is it?”
“I—”
Knock, knock.
“Hm? Who could that be? I'm not expecting any visitors. I'm sorry, we can continue this later.” Camellia Cookie stood up and opened the door.
“Hello, Camellia Cookie,” said a yellow Cookie. “How's it going?”
“Golden Osmanthus Cookie, you're here.”
“Oh? Do you have a visitor?” She looked over his shoulder at Caramel Arrow Cookie. “I'm sorry, am I disturbing something?”
“No, no, you're not. Please, don't worry about it.”
“Okay… I was wondering if you had any tea leaves? I wanted to try a new scent.”
“Of course I do. Please, come in.” He let her in and she sat down beside Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Thanks, Camellia Cookie.”
“No problem. It'll be quick.” He left the room once more.
“Um… Hello, I'm Golden Osmanthus Cookie. May I know your name?” She asked in a friendly manner.
“Hello, Golden Osmanthus Cookie. I'm Caramel Arrow Cookie, from the Dark Cacao Kingdom.” She responded.
“Woah, all the way from there? What's it like? I heard it's rather snowy in that place.”
“It is, indeed. Under the rule of King Dark Cacao Cookie, it has become more prosperous after his journey from Beast-Yeast. I protect it as the First Watcher, with my trusty bow.”
“You're a warrior? How interesting.”
“How about you? What do you do for a living?”
“Oh, I'm a perfumer. I wouldn't say it's just for a living though… I thoroughly enjoy making fragrances.”
“I see.”
“Here are your tea leaves, Golden Osmanthus Cookie,” said Camellia Cookie, handing her a bag. “I hope you make good use of it.”
“I will! Don't worry.” She stood up, and went for the door. “I should return now, before my sister finds out I'm visiting you… again.”
Camellia Cookie chuckled. “Ha, don't worry about it. If you see her, tell her to apologize for calling me old and musty.”
“Heh, you're still hung up on that?” Golden Osmanthus Cookie covered her mouth as she laughed.
“I'm kidding, of course. These leaves were recently gathered from the Tea Valley.”
“Really? Are they expensive? I'd feel bad taking them if they were…”
“Would you like some of the cheap ones I still haven't sold?” He bickered. “Besides, why wouldn't I provide you with some of the highest quality?”
“That's not what I'm saying! You know that.”
“Heh.”
“Alright, that's all I needed. See you tomorrow.”
“Goodbye, see you tomorrow.” As she left, he kept silent.
“...”
“Camellia Cookie?” Caramel Arrow Cookie stood up and neared him.
“I'm sorry for the disturbance. You were saying…?”
“...Nevermind, it is not important,” Caramel Arrow Cookie looked behind her. “Is there a place I can stay for the night?”
“Ah, you can stay here. There is a guest room.”
“Thank you. Can you show me where it is?”
“Sure. Follow me.” They headed to the guest room. The pastel colours and deep green filled the room, matching Camellia Cookie’s outfit.
“You may use this room however you wish.” He bowed his head. But before he left, Caramel Arrow Cookie asked,
“Camellia Cookie, what is your relationship with Golden Osmanthus Cookie?”
“Hm? Why are you asking?”
“I'm just curious, is all. It seems that you two were close.”
“Ah, I see,” Camellia Cookie looked behind him then back at her. “We're childhood friends.” Although minor, a slight shift in expression caught the eye of Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Okay then.” Camellia Cookie's expression turns to suspicion, alerting her. He's suspicious of my question.
“I will leave you to rest. If you need something, just call my name.” He nodded his head and left the room.
“...” Caramel Arrow Cookie placed her small bag of items on the bed and sat down beside it. She stared at the bag, unsure of what to do next. This was supposed to be a vacation but… She rubbed her chin, thinking of a way to relax, but nothing came to mind. Unfortunately, I don't have any ways of unwinding… Maybe a walk outside? Perhaps that would help. She stood up, straightened her clothes, and made her way outside.
She walked and walked around the property, unable to get her thoughts out of her mind. The gentle breeze swept her hair in her face, being the only thing preventing her from going into a trance and tripping on something.
I need to discuss this with him tomorrow… And even then, it seems he has already fallen for another. Could it be just what I think? Caramel Arrow Cookie sighed and her mood lowered. She looked at the falling sun, painting the sky a purple-orange gradient that could capture even the coldest of hearts. She found a spot to get a better look at the sunset, which had almost been over, turning night, making the stars come out to peek at the earth.
“...” Her eyelids laid heavy, not from tiredness, but from doubt. “I shall go home the day after tomorrow. I can't keep my kingdom waiting.”
Using this rare alone time, she sat down, watching the fading sunlight turn into stars. The hills lay unmoving, turning different colours alongside the shifting sky. While the walking didn't help ease her mind, the dusk did. Even though, atop the walls of the Dark Cacao Kingdom, she has seen more than a hundred sunsets, this one was a change of pace, that even she had to admit, was needed.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie?” A familiar voice called out. She turned around and saw Camellia Cookie, who was walking closer.
“Camellia Cookie?” She replied. “What is it? Is it anything you need?”
“Actually, I was looking for you. I noticed you weren't at the guest room, and became worried.”
“Worried? But why?”
“I know you can handle yourself, but…” He lowered his head, his cheeks quickly turning a crimson colour. “I couldn't help it.”
“…” Caramel Arrow Cookie looked at him. She had a feeling he had developed some sort of feelings for her, but couldn't prove it. It could just be that he was like that with everyone he met. “I… have something to discuss.”
“What is it?” The crimson still sat on his pale dough.
“I…” Should I discuss this tomorrow? “Nevermind.”
“That's the second time you've done this.” He said. Although the statement itself was accusatory, he doesn't seem to mind it.
“I'm sorry, I just have a lot on my mind lately.”
“Will you allow me to sit beside you, then? To watch the sky and talk about what’s going on?” Camellia Cookie offered.
“I don't mind.” She said. He sat down beside her.
“So, what's going on? Anything that's making you unable to enjoy your vacation?” He rested his arm on his raised leg.
“I've just…”
“It's okay if you don't want to say it.” He rubbed her shoulder.
“...” She kept her mouth shut, keeping her focus on the setting sun, which had mostly disappeared.
“Too bad I missed most of the sunset,” Camellia Cookie commented. “Was it beautiful?”
“It was, like every time the sun had set.”
Camellia Cookie adjusted his monocle. “I see,” His mouth remained open, like he wanted to say something more, but he closed it before the words got out. They both kept quiet, watching the sun disappear behind the landscape, turning the yellow noon into the dark blue night.
“I think it's time to head inside, don't you think?”
“Yes, it's going to get cold. While I am used to it, I'd rather the warmth of the indoors.” Caramel Arrow Cookie stated before standing up, dusting her clothes.
“Well then,” He stood up as well. “Let's go inside together, shall we?” She nodded her head and they headed in together. She felt she needed a good sleep after all this.
“Will you be heading to the guest room?”
“I will. I need proper rest.”
“Just wait here a bit before you enter the room.”
“What do you plan to do?”
“You will see.” He went into the room, leaving Caramel Arrow Cookie rightfully confused. She sat down and waited for him to finish, looking at the table, which no longer had the calligraphy tools and tea. She waited for a moment until Camellia Cookie came out of the room.
“I've finished preparing your room. I hope you like it.”
“What did you do?”
“I prepared a fragrance that may soothe your mind. But do tell me if it's overbearing.”
“...Thank you.”
“You're welcome.” He smiled, then left again shortly after.
“...” Did he get that fragrance from Golden Osmanthus Cookie? She is a perfumer after all… Caramel Arrow Cookie shook her head and made her way inside the guest room.
The scent was encompassing the whole room. A sweet, faint scent. She couldn't pinpoint what it could be, however. With a sigh, she rested herself on the bed, taking the blanket to cover her until her chest. After staring at the blank ceiling, she closed her eyes, hoping the kingdom was safe, even without her.
Before the night turned to morning, due to her work as a warrior, she woke up, rubbing her eyes and stretching her body. As she left the bed, she fixed it to get the day started.
“Is it too early to talk?” She asked herself in a whisper. Perhaps the opportunity would show itself when needed. She looked through her small bag, and noticed the snacks she still had untouched. I don't wish to pester him about breakfast, so this'll do. She ate the food and cleaned herself up before leaving the room.
The main room was empty, telling her that Camellia Cookie was still sleeping. I must keep quiet. Let me take a walk outside. She exited the building and walked around the city.
She had been introduced to most of the place. Seeing the citizens live a life filled with happiness reminded her of what she wanted for her own kingdom: for everyone to live a fulfilling life, without worry.
“Is that…?” She spotted Golden Osmanthus Cookie, with what seemed like her younger sister. She walked closer to greet them.
“Don't tell me you're going to visit that pink-haired guy again!” said the red Cookie, pouting.
“What? I'm not going to do that! Why would you think so?”
“Because that's what you do practically every day!”
She covered her face in embarrassment. “Oh, really? I didn't notice… Hm?” She noticed Caramel Arrow Cookie. “Oh, it's you!”
“Hello, Golden Osmanthus Cookie. I'm just here to walk around the place. How are you doing?”
“I'm doing well. Oh, you probably don't know my sister here. She's Red Osmanthus Cookie, say hi!”
“Hello. As you should probably know, I'm the best pipa player in the city!” She said, a proud look on her face.
“Aha, don't mind her. How's Camellia Cookie?”
“Of course you're asking about him! Wait, why are you asking her about him?”
“She's the visitor I told you about!” Golden Osmanthus Cookie replied.
“Oh, I see,” Red Osmanthus Cookie looked her up and down. “You're a warrior, right?”
“Yes, I am. A proud warrior of the Dark Cacao Kingdom. To answer your question, Golden Osmanthus Cookie, he seems to be doing well. I couldn't check on him since I assumed he was still sleeping. It is rather early, afterall.”
“Yes, it is,” Golden Osmanthus Cookie sighed. “I wish I didn't have to wake up this early, but it's become part of my schedule.”
“I see.” said Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Okay, okay, let's go to the marketplace, sister! I heard they're selling some cool items recently!”
“Alright, don't get too carried away now. Do you wish to join us, Caramel Arrow Cookie?”
“I wouldn't mind if you don't.”
“No! I mind, actually.” The young pipa player crossed her arms.
“Ehe, she's a bit… overprotective of me, I hope you understand.”
“It's no worries, if she wishes for me not to join, then I won't. I plan to continue my walk.”
“Have a nice walk, then!” She turned around, but Caramel Arrow Cookie suddenly remembered something.
“Actually, wait, I have something to ask… in private, if you may.”
“Is it important?”
“I just need to talk to you for a bit, if you don't mind. Hopefully, your sister doesn't mind either.”
“Why should I let you go alone with her? You're some outsider, I don't know what you're going to do!”
“Red Osmanthus Cookie! Please, I'm sure she has good intentions.”
“Hmph!” She pouted.
“Let us find a quiet place to talk. Follow me. Wait for me here, sister.”
Red Osmanthus Cookie sighed. “Okay…” The two Cookies found a spot to continue discussing, behind a small building.
“So, what is it?”
“I wonder, do you harbor any feelings for Camellia Cookie?”
“Wh-What? Why would I? I mean…” She blushed, holding her face in embarrassment. Knowing her face is clearly showing it, she confessed. “...Yes, I do have feelings towards Camellia Cookie, but why do you wish to know?”
“I was just wondering… You two seemed close the last time you came by, is all.”
“Hm… Are you sure that's it? Don't tell me… you too, have feelings for him?” That question made Caramel Arrow Cookie think for a moment, trying to see deep within her if she does, in fact, harbor feelings for him as well. But no matter how hard she looked, it seemed she couldn't find the answer. “Take your time… If you do, I wouldn't get in your way…” Her face turned to sadness. Golden Osmanthus Cookie… I'm sorry.
“Ugh, why that old and musty guy?!” said a whisper, but it was still heard by Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Was that… your sister?” Caramel Arrow Cookie said.
“My sister? Red Osmanthus Cookie!” She turned around, seeing the bow of her sister peeking out of the wall. “Why were you eavesdropping?!”
“Huh? No one's here!”
“Sister! Come out, this instant!”
Guilty, Red Osmanthus Cookie came out of hiding. “I'm sorry, but I couldn't let you be alone with someone I don't know! I was afraid for your safety…”
“Aw, sister… But you shouldn't have been peeking. I can handle myself, okay?”
“Yeah… But anyway, why do you have feelings for that Cookie?!”
“Sister, I-I don't know how to explain it. We both seem to treasure each other, ever since we were young.” The young Cookie kept quiet, looking worried.
“You look nervous, Red Osmanthus Cookie,” said Caramel Arrow Cookie. “Do you have any worries to share?”
“Why should I share it with you?!”
“Sister!”
“Sorry, but I… don't want my sister to stop visiting me again just because she's with that old guy!”
“He's not old! I mean, you don't consider me old, do you?”
“He has white hair like the elders! Of course he's old.”
“Didn't you say he had pink hair?”
“B-Besides the point!”
“But… you wouldn't have to worry about me being with Camellia Cookie. It's clear that… there's someone else for him, better than me.”
“Don't say that about yourself,” Caramel Arrow Cookie said. “You aren't less than any other Cookie out there.”
“Yeah, she's right! Stop putting yourself down!”
“It's okay, don't worry about lil’ old me. Let's go to the marketplace, little sister. I need… to get things off my mind. Have a nice walk, Caramel Arrow Cookie.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie waved goodbye, then began walking alongside her sister to the direction of the marketplace. As soon as they were far enough, Caramel Arrow Cookie sighed, thinking of what she had to say to Camellia Cookie about what she thought.
“I must think of a way to put it lightly.” She said to herself, then continued her walk.
She continued to venture around the city until the sun showed itself, lighting the city and causing the flowers to open up in bloom. With that, she took it as a sign to return to the Teahouse.
“Ah, Caramel Arrow Cookie, you're here. Did you go out for a walk?” Camellia Cookie said as soon as she entered.
“I did. I wasn't sure what to do that early in the day, so I went out.”
Camellia Cookie smiled. “How nice. I've prepared breakfast for the two of us.”
“I'm sorry, but I already ate. I should've waited for you to wake up to tell you that.”
“Ha, don't worry. I don't mind having leftovers for later.” He remained seated, eating his food.
“...Camellia Cookie, I know you just woke up, but I have something to talk to you about.”
“Are you going to say ‘nevermind’ again like the last two times? Hehe.” He chuckled.
She couldn't help but give a small smile, but returned to a serious expression. “I’ve been observing your behaviour and… I have taken notice that you may have feelings for me.”
Camellia Cookie paused. “...I see.”
“So, it's true?”
“It is. I do have feelings for you, Caramel Arrow Cookie,” He was surprisingly direct. He placed his hand on his lap. “Sit down, it would tire you to be standing up the whole time,” He patted the spot beside him. She made her way to the seat, her countenance still serious. “Golden Osmanthus Cookie, I will admit, I've had feelings for as well.”
“...” I knew that would be the case. She couldn't help but knit her brow.
“But you came along, and honestly, swept me off my feet. I didn't think it would be so soon after we met but…”
“I'm sorry, but we can't.” She lowered her head.
His eyes widened. “What do you mean?”
“We are Cookies of different lands — one of flowers and one of snow. Our distance is far too great to sustain a relationship such as this, even with your messenger pigeons, I'm afraid. And… it seems another Cookie has fallen for you. Someone better suited than me.” I can't tell him that it's Golden Osmanthus Cookie.
“...” His gaze fell, looking at her hands. With hesitation, he held it, and looked in her eyes. “I don't care about our distance. I'll try everything to make it work. My messenger pigeons have been on many continents, they can handle the journey. It doesn't matter who has fallen for me — for it's you, that has my eye.”
“I'm sorry, but I truly don't see it happening…”
“...When do you plan to go back?”
“Tomorrow. Tomorrow is when I leave and return to the kingdom and go back to my duties.”
“I see…” His grip on her hand tightened. “Caramel Arrow Cookie…”
“What is it?” She asked.
“Ahem,” Camellia Cookie cleared his throat. “Now, what should we do?”
“I am not sure.” She fixed her hair, adjusting the hair piece still on it.
“Well, why don't we have some tea? I've recently gotten a batch of some of the finest tea from the Tea Valley.”
“...Sure.” He stood up and left the room, leaving Caramel Arrow Cookie to her racing thoughts. Even knowing their distance is going to make it harder, it seemed he was determined to make it work, no matter what. But her duties as the First Watcher are sure to make it even harder. Is he aware of it? I can't let my feelings distract me from duty… But of course he would keep that in mind…
She waited for Camellia to finish brewing the tea, which he brought and placed on the table. He picked up a cup and gave it Caramel Arrow Cookie before picking up his own. She slowly drank the tea.
“How do you like it?” Camellia Cookie asked. She looked at him, slowly twirling the liquid in the cup.
“It's good.” She smiled.
He smiled back. “I'm glad you like it.”
Knock, knock.
“Interrupted again during tea, heh.” Camellia Cookie commented before going to the door.
“Hello, Camellia Cookie.” It was Golden Osmanthus Cookie, whose face said that her mind was filled with thoughts that worried her.
“What is it? You don't seem to bring good news.”
“It's not that, I… need to talk to you. Privately.”
“I see,” He looked behind him, at the Cookie sitting down. “Please, show me the way.” He got out, closing the door behind him.
Should I…? No, I must remain here.
They arrived at the back of the building.
“Camellia Cookie…” Her face turned red. “I have something to confess,” Camellia Cookie's brow furrowed. He knew what she would say. “I… I have feelings for you, but… I don't expect you to return them.”
“Why… did you wait until now?”
“It was because of Caramel Arrow Cookie… She asked me about my feelings for you, and I had a suspicion it was because of you… not returning my feelings anymore.”
“Caramel Arrow Cookie…” He lowered his head.
“I wanted closure. I didn't want to let my feelings fester… I hope you understand.”
“Of course I do, Golden Osmanthus Cookie.”
“Is that all you have to say?”
“I just don't know what else to say to you after this…”
“I'm truly sorry for disturbing you.”
“Don't be. You're my friend, Golden Osmanthus Cookie, and I do think you are important to me… But like you said, I, unfortunately, don't return your feelings.”
“It’s okay, I never expected you to. But if I had done so earlier, would you have accepted my confession?”
“...I wouldn't know that.”
“I see…”
“You said ‘don’t return my feelings anymore’... You knew? And yet…”
“I had an inkling that could be the case, especially with our previous conversations… Have a good day, Camellia Cookie. And tell Caramel Arrow Cookie I said ‘hi’.” She smiled, even if filled with regret, still had a hint of happiness in it for him.
“I will, don't worry.” Golden Osmanthus Cookie quickly made her way out of the property. Camellia Cookie remained standing, looking at the ground. He felt some sort of pain, feeling guilty for normal feelings.
It was too late. Nothing he can do now.
The door opened, and Camellia Cookie entered.
“Camellia Cookie, are you okay?” Caramel Arrow Cookie asked. She had a feeling about what could have happened, but decided assuming wouldn't be best.
“I'm fine, don't worry,” He shook his head. “I have some business dealings to take care of. You may do anything you wish here, just make sure to call Cobalt Cookie before you leave.”
“Cobalt Cookie?”
“He’s a close friend of mine. I have already informed him of your visit. He usually hangs out with the pigeons, spoiling them, haha.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Goodbye. Oh, and Golden Osmanthus Cookie… said ‘hi’.” Camellia Cookie covered his face. He turned around and left. I should think of something to do… He did say I have freedom to check the place. She looked around the rather large building, every room having its own unique scent of tea, as if he had done so deliberately. She stumbled upon his room, which was filled with countless papers and brushes strewn about. It seems he keeps a rather neat exterior, but his room says otherwise… But I don't want to intrude on his privacy. She looked away from the doorway, and headed for the kitchen.
The fragrance of tea was strong, alongside other spices. Some ingredients were left outside their respective compartments. It seemed he didn't clean up after himself after preparing breakfast for the two of them.
A thought crept up on her. I wonder… What is it going to be like after I'm gone? She thought she wouldn't mind the thought of him moving on if she left, but the thought brought her a strange pain she wasn't used to, like she was afraid of a hole left in her heart not even enemies could pierce. No, I shouldn't think of such things. It'll only make it harder to accept when it happens. She sighed and returned to the guest room.
She opened her bag and took out her old outfit, already missing the comfort of her brown and black clothing. She put it back in the bag. She went to the doorway.
“Hello,” said Camellia Cookie, who was waiting in the main room. “I was able to take care of things quickly.”
“That's good to know.” She replied.
“Say, how about a trip to a restaurant? I would like for you to try some of the local cuisine.”
“Don’t tell me you want to treat me again.”
“Haha, you read my mind. This won't make me go broke. Unless you decide to indulge yourself, then that's the point I would worry, heh.” He teased.
“I don't want you to keep doing this for me.”
“You're on vacation. I don't want to have to make you worry about your expenses.”
“But I don't mind—”
“Like I said before, no buts.” Caramel Arrow Cookie sighed, knowing she can't change his mind. The two left the Teahouse, making their way to the restaurant.
“Hello, you lovely couple! Want a table?” said the host. “Or maybe you two are a couple… of friends? Whatever the case is, we have more than enough tables ready!”
“Just a table for two, please. I had reserved one earlier.”
“Mhm, what's your name?”
“Camellia Cookie.”
“Camellia Cookie, Camellia Cookie…” He said as he looked at the book of reservations. “Ah-ha, follow me!” They followed the host to their table. He handed them their menus before leaving them be.
“What caught your eye?” Camellia Cookie asked.
“Hm… I am interested in this pidan doufu.”
“Heh, a good choice. I'll get the same as well.”
The waiter came, saying, “Are you two done ordering? If so, may I take it?”
“We’ll both have the pidan doufu.”
“Any drinks?”
“Just water is fine. You?” He asked.
“Same here.” Caramel Arrow Cookie answered.
“I see. I will hand over your order to the chef. Please, wait here and be patient until your food arrives.”
“Thank you,” The waiter bowed his head and went on his way to the kitchen to place their order. “Seems like we'll be eating the same thing.”
“Ha, it seems we will.”
“While we wait, how about we talk about… Hm, our future?”
“As in our plans for the future?”
“Yes.”
“I plan to continue guarding the Dark Cacao Kingdom. That is my life's duty, after all.”
“You’re quite loyal to your kingdom, how admirable. As for me, I'll continue my quest for knowledge, with my messenger pigeons by my side.”
“Speaking of which, I've noticed your pigeons are rather plumper than normal. I suspect that's Cobalt Cookie’s doing? You did say he'd spoil them.”
“Haha, yes. He'd spend most of his money on feeding the pigeons. I just hope he has enough for himself. Anything else you noticed?”
“Now that I think about it, when did you reserve a table for us?”
“When I went out a few moments ago. I didn't have much work to do, so when I was done, I made my way here.”
“But this restaurant doesn't seem packed.”
“I did it just in case. You never know, right?”
‘I see.”
“Why do you ask? You don't think I got this for someone else, do you?”
“...No, I was just asking. I didn't know what else to talk about, so I asked about it.”
“Yes, I understand. How about this: What do you think the pidan doufu tastes like?”
“I’m not sure what the ingredients are, so I can't make an assumption.”
“It’s made of preserved egg and tofu, with some vinegar and soy sauce, usually served cold. Now, you think it's enough for an answer?”
“Hm… I would assume an aged flavour?”
“Since a bit has passed, they probably have it prepared by now. Hopefully, you're looking forward to it.” After a few moments of watching restaurant goers come and go, their food arrives. The odor of the food is strong. They begin eating, and the flavourful taste of the pidan doufu made Caramel Arrow Cookie raise her eyebrows in surprise.
“It seems you like it.”
“This is pretty good. I didn't think it had such a flavour.”
“It’s great you like it,” He took a bite. “Let's eat quietly, shall we?” Caramel Arrow Cookie nodded in reply. They continued eating until they finished, cleaned up after themselves, and left the restaurant.
“Where are we going next?”
“Hm… I’d leave that to you.”
“Do you really have no plans for today?”
“Well, I mostly paint anyway during my free time. But now that you're here, I've decided to spend that free time with you.”
“...” She looked at the ground, feeling somewhat conflicted. “How about we head back to the Teahouse?”
“Why? Already tired?”
“I’m just not familiar with most of the place yet, despite you giving a tour. I wouldn't know what places would be best to go to.”
“Ah, I see. If that's what you say, let's go back.” They made their way to the Teahouse. On their way, Caramel Arrow Cookie couldn't help but keep thinking about what he said to her before they went to the restaurant. “I have feelings for you…” But do I feel the same…?
They arrived, and Caramel Arrow Cookie made her way to the guest room. Camellia Cookie would go back to his room. Sitting on the bed, she looked through her bag.
“Do I…?” She said to herself as she finished up. “I can't tell…” She sighed and stood on her feet. She faced the window outside, a few leaves peeking out of the frame. She watched as a drop of water ran down, growing bigger and bigger, then finally reaching the bottom. She got out of the room, where a blue Cookie and Camellia Cookie were discussing.
“Caramel Arrow Cookie? What are you doing out here?”
“Sorry, am I interrupting something?”
“Oh, it's nothing, don't worry. This is Cobalt Cookie.”
“Hello.” The blue Cookie greeted.
“Hello, I'm Caramel Arrow Cookie, as you've heard.”
“So, you're the visitor he mentioned? Hm.”
“Anything you want to ask?”
“No, not at all.” He turned to Camellia Cookie, whispering something she couldn't hear. It seemed to get Camellia Cookie’s face to turn red.
“Is there anything wrong?” She asked.
“No, nothing at all.” Camellia Cookie cleared his throat. The crimson cleared from his face. “That’s all I have to discuss with you, Cobalt Cookie. You may leave. And here's your payment. Make sure to leave some for yourself, don't spend it all on the pigeons.”
A small smile crept upon Cobalt Cookie’s face, which quickly dissipated. “Thank you. And I'll try.” He took his leave.
“Looks like there's a lot on your mind.” Camellia Cookie said.
“I…” She crossed her arms, keeping her gaze away from him.
“You can tell me anything, okay?”
“...” She briefly looked at him before walking past, a sad look on her face. She made her way outside, hoping for some fresh air.
The noon was now young, but there didn't seem like much to do. You might think that there was nothing to do as well as the guard of a kingdom, only looking out for intruders, but it was her passion, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. But on vacation, she couldn't think of anything to do.
She walked around the property once more, with Camellia Cookie watching her pass by through a window. She noticed, but didn't bother showing she did.
Should I have returned earlier? She was worried for her kingdom, unsure of how they're doing. How were the guards at the gates? The Second Watcher? The rest of the warriors that keep constant watch over the walls? The staff at the kingdom? Dark Cacao Cookie?
There was no way to know, and staying here only made her more anxious. She wasn't doubting their abilities — in fact, she was confident they'd be able to fend off any enemy that came by. But what if they were one soldier away from winning a possible battle with the monsters of the Licorice Sea? What if—
“Caramel Arrow Cookie?” She turned around. It was Camellia Cookie. “I noticed you were just standing still, so I wanted to check on you.”
“Oh, sorry, I've just been thinking about the kingdom…”
He put a hand on his hip. “Worried that something bad happened?” She nodded. “I get it. Want to go back inside? Or have an idea on where to go? It's pretty early, you know?”
“...Are there any boats to ride on? I've seen some going around when we toured before.”
“Ah, yes, we can go on a boat ride if you wish. I'll treat you.”
Knowing she won't be able to change his mind, she accepted. “Alright.”
“Do you wish to do anything before then?”
“No, I'm fine going right now.”
“Let’s go then.”
An onlooker saw them as they headed to the boats. She accepted after her confession that he had fallen for another. Now, it doesn't seem to bother her anymore. She was happy that he was.
“Come on!” Her sister pestered. With a chuckle, she followed her.
“For two, please.” Camellia Cookie said to the boatcookie. He gave him some coins and they began their ride down the river.
The people walking down the paths and enjoying their lives, the calming sounds of the waters, the faint chirping of the birds, the petals falling — all of which can calm any Cookie down.
“Have you ever been on a boat before?” asked Camellia Cookie.
“No, I haven't.”
“How's it for your first time?”
“It's rather relaxing, I'll admit.”
“Well, at least you like it,” Camellia Cookie placed his hand in the water, picking up a few petals. He then cleared his hand and faced Caramel Arrow Cookie. “We'll be back on land shortly. So, if you start disliking it, you won't have to wait long.”
“I don't think I will.”
“Haha, just kidding, of course.”
“Are you a visitor here?” asked the boatcookie.
“If you're talking to me, yes, I am.” Caramel Arrow Cookie answered.
“I figured.”
“Is there anything you'd like to ask?”
“Well, not ask, but I assume you've already been introduced to the city thanks to Mister Camellia Cookie.”
“Yes, I have. Is there anything more about the city you want to share?”
“Perhaps you already know this, but we are protected by the Divine Guardian, a powerful being that resides in the forest. I heard that Golden Osmanthus Cookie and Camellia Cookie were able to quell the pain of the Divine Guardian not long ago.”
“Really?” She looked at Camellia Cookie.
“Oh, it wasn't just the two of us. Cobalt Cookie helped a lot as well. But it was Golden Osmanthus Cookie and her incense that helped the most out of the two of us.”
“I’m sure you also helped greatly.” She said.
“Thank you. There were a lot of Cookievorous plants that attacked us and the city due to the Divine Guardian’s power dwindling. I’m glad that no one was hurt, at least gravely.”
“I see.”
“Do you have any questions about the Divine Guardian? Or the Flower City in general?”
“No, not right now.”
“Well, if you're curious about anything, don't be afraid to ask. But I do have some questions about the Dark Cacao Kingdom, if you don't mind.”
“I don't mind at all.”
“So, I heard that the king was trying to fortify his walls for a long time. I assume it was for the Licorice Sea?”
“Yes, we were ordered to continue fortifying the walls. But then a giant monster from the depths of that wretched sea was able to break it down. Since then, we've fixed it, but I can't say I haven't felt fear for my people.”
“I imagine it was a very scary situation.”
“I will admit, it was. But we were able to defeat it, and fended off the Licorice Sea once more. No doubt thanks to the Dark Cacao soldiers that have put their crumbs on the line.”
“I see. All those soldiers are surely shaken, but I don't have any doubt in their abilities going forward.”
“I would never doubt my comrades.”
“I have more to ask. There was word that you were banished from the kingdom for some time. Why was that?”
Caramel Arrow Cookie’s face changed to anger. “Yes, it was because of that sniveling snake. I can't believe he was able to fool the King into believing his lies.”
“‘Sniveling snake’? Who could that be?”
“His name was Affogato Cookie. That snake was the cause of my temporary banishment.”
“Seems you really disdain him. In your position, I would too.”
“I'm glad you understand.”
“Oh, we're at the end.”
“The ride’s finished,” said the boatcookie. They've returned to the starting point. “You can go now.”
“Thank you for the ride,” said Camellia Cookie. “Have a nice day.”
“Thanks. Next!” The boatcookie shouted as they left for their next destination.
“Where are we going?”
“I wish to show you the Divine Guardian.”
They began to go towards the forests, staying on the path. They made it to the snake-shaped stone walls, adorned with moss and plants. The cliff, the head of the serpentine stone body, would stare at the city, watching over it for eternity.
“So, this is the Guardian you speak of? How grand.” She commented. The light breeze rustled the leaves, as if the Guardian was saying something in reply.
“Yes. This Guardian protects this city. The Guardian’s body forms the walls that protect us. Much like your kingdom’s walls.” Camellia Cookie's gaze stayed on the grand cliff.
“How interesting. Do you know of your Guardian’s origins?”
“I tried to study that, but couldn't find information on it. All I know is that the Divine Guardian appeared at some point, long before Flower City was established,” He chuckled as he remembered something. “Actually, the Divine Guardian is a rather small Cookie.”
Her eyes widened. “They are? I didn't think they'd have a Cookie form.”
“Yes. After their strength was restored thanks to Golden Osmanthus Cookie‘s incense, they appeared before us in a blinding light. I wonder how they're doing these days.”
“You don't know where they could be?”
“I don't keep constant watch over them. I'm not really their babysitter, am I?”
“Hm, should we return? I have no more questions.” Caramel Arrow Cookie said.
“Sure, if that's what you want.” They turned around and followed the path back to the Teahouse. When they entered, Caramel Arrow Cookie made her way to the seat. Camellia Cookie went to his room, gathering his art supplies to paint outside. Before he went outside, Caramel Arrow Cookie asked,
“You have a lot of free time, don't you?”
“I'm very lucky for that, hehe. Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?”
“None that I can think of at the moment.”
“How about you come with me? Let's paint together.”
“But I'm not good at painting.”
“I don't care about the quality of the artwork. We're just doing this just for fun.”
“If that's what you say, then sure. I’ll come with you.” She stood up and followed Camellia Cookie outside.
“Here,” He gave her a brush and a piece of paper. “How about we try painting each other?”
“Are you sure? I might give you a new eye.”
“Ha, we’ll see. Maybe you have a hidden talent.”
“Hm.” They begin painting. Camellia Cookie seemed relaxed as he painted, while Caramel Arrow Cookie was trying hard to focus and capture Camellia Cookie's features. An hour has passed, and Camella Cookie finished his painting while Caramel Arrow Cookie was still trying her best. He walked over to her, trying to take a look at her painting.
“Ah…” The painting was rather crude, but that was expected of an amateur. And it seemed like she wasn’t joking when she said she’d give him an extra eye. “Well, for a beginner, it’s not bad.”
“We all start somewhere.”
“When I was a young Cookie, I wasn’t good at first either. But with practice, you’ll get better. I’m pretty sure you understand — it’s like how you weren’t good at combat before training and training.”
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to practice painting much with my duties taking my time.”
“That’s fair. Hopefully, you'll still have enough time to respond to me whenever I send you letters.”
“It wouldn’t take much time to, I would imagine.”
He smiled. “That's good to know. Well, here's my painting of you,” He went over to his side and grabbed his painting, then gave it to Caramel Arrow Cookie. “I hope you like it.” It was a beautiful painting, as if every stroke was filled with care. Caramel Arrow Cookie couldn’t help but smile at yet another gift.
“Thank you. I do like it a lot.”
“You're welcome,” A tint of rose appeared on his face. “You can continue your painting, I'll sit down so that you can have a better look at me.” He grabbed his chair and placed it in front of her. He sat down and straightened his posture.
Another hour passed and Caramel Arrow Cookie was finally done. She turned the easel around slowly.
“I tried my best.” It was clearly the work of a beginner, but it’s not something you can fault her for. Even with that, Camellia Cookie took it off the easel, and appreciated the painting.
“This is great,” He rolled it and held it on his side. “I’ll keep this in my room.”
“It’s nice you like it despite me being a beginner.”
“Of course I like it, it was made by you,” A soft expression appeared on her face. “Let’s head inside. What would you like?”
“I’m looking forward to some water.”
“Alright, just wait in the main room and I’ll bring it for you.”
“I can do it myself, you don’t have to keep doing that.”
“You’ve been standing for a couple of hours now, go ahead and rest.”
“...” Is he just doing this now to win over me…? What would he be like later on…? She looked at the ground.
“Hm? What are you thinking about?” Camellia Cookie asked.
“It’s nothing, let’s go.” Camellia Cookie knew something was off, but didn't question it. They went inside, and Camellia Cookie took a cup of water for Caramel Arrow Cookie.
“Here you go.” He said as he handed the cup to her.
“Thank you,” She took a sip. Camellia Cookie sat beside her. “Is there anything you’d like to ask?”
“You seem to have a lot on your mind lately,” Camellia Cookie held her hand. “Is there anything you'd like to tell me? I promise, I won’t get mad, whatever it is.”
“...” Caramel Arrow Cookie placed her cup on the table. She avoided eye contact, unsure of what to say to him. He looked at her patiently. She started off with a sigh. “I've just been having doubts about what you are doing for me. Will you continue this even after some time has passed?”
“Of course I will,” He answered without hesitation. “I care about you, Caramel Arrow Cookie. I want the best for you.”
“...” She didn't have anything to say, because she didn't know what to say.
“I hope you know that I will always care for you, no matter how far you may be. How about some tea?” He stood up and went to the kitchen instead of waiting for an answer. After a few moments, he came back with a tray of tea. The scent of the tea was a mix of cinnamon and green tea, forming a lovely fragrance. “Here.”
“Thank you.” She picked up a cup and drank the tea, which was still boiling hot.
“If you ever want something to add to your tea, like sugar, just ask.”
“No, thank you. I'm fine without additives.”
“I personally like a sugar cube from time to time,” He mixed his tea with a teaspoon. “This tea has been sitting in our storage for a bit. I've been wanting to taste it for some time. What do you think about it?”
“It tastes good. I don't have much to say, as I'm not well-versed in tea-tasting.”
“That's fine. Tea-tasting is a skill you have to hone.”
“Are you into tea-tasting?”
“As a trader who deals with tea and tea leaves, it is something I have to dabble in so I'm more trusted with what I'm talking about.”
“That makes sense.”
“Are there any skills besides martial arts that being the First Watcher has made you well-versed in?”
“I would say survival skills are important for any soldier. The wilderness is unpredictable, and having such skills is to be expected.”
“You mentioned adding straws to the soles of your shoes yesterday, didn't you? What else have you done to survive the wilderness?”
“I've learned how to create and set traps to gather Boar Jellies.”
“Not just set, but create as well? How fascinating. Maybe you can teach me? Who knows, maybe I'll have to head to the wilderness some day, and this knowledge will come in handy.”
“Maybe I can teach you later?” She laughed. “It's better for us to rest.”
“Oh, finally, you're taking this vacation seriously. Are you sure you don't want to stay another day…?” There was a tinge of longing in that question.
“I'm sorry, but I have to return to my kingdom.”
“That's understandable. It's truly admirable that you treasure your kingdom so much.” Camellia Cookie looked outside the window; it didn't feel like much time had passed, yet the sun was setting.
“It's already turning late, huh?”
“It is indeed…” He looked at Caramel Arrow Cookie. “How about we watch the sunset together? I know a better spot than last time.”
“Why not?” Both of them stood up. He made his way up a staircase, with Caramel Arrow Cookie following behind. They made it to the rooftop, where they sat down at the ledge, facing the setting sun.
“At least I'm not missing it this time, haha.” He said.
“Why would it be special this time?” She asked.
He covered his mouth, looking shy. “Because it's with you,” Caramel Arrow Cookie didn't respond, instead looking at the sun disappearing behind the hills. He tapped his hand on the roof, as if contemplating something. He neared his face to hers. Caramel Arrow Cookie noticed, and a bead of sweat formed with heat reached her cheeks.
“What are you doing…?”
“I hope to give you a parting gift before you have to leave tomorrow. I wish for you to know that I…” He held her face. “I genuinely do love you, Caramel Arrow Cookie.”
“...” She lowered her head, unsure of whether to accept this confession.
“Can we…?” She looked into his eyes — sinbad and soft. It's like she can't help but be pulled in.
“...” But she couldn't answer his question. She wasn't sure if it was for the best. She was going to leave soon, and having these feelings would distract her from duty. He neared and neared, until they were too close for comfort. She wanted to turn away but couldn't bring herself to, it's like she was locked in place. But does she want to turn away? Even she doesn't know.
“Tell me, do you at least love me back?”
“...” She kept quiet once more. She, once again, didn't know. Their lips touched, they closed their eyes, taking in the moment.
They separate. Caramel Arrow Cookie covered her mouth, almost instinctively. Camellia Cookie rubbed the back of his head, both their cheeks turning red. They avoided eye contact with each other, unsure of what to do with themselves.
“Ahem,” He broke the silence. “Let us take in the remaining rays of this sunset, shall we?” The both of them looked at the sun, which has coloured the sky a beautiful purple hue, and then mixed into a dark blue, indicating the night had come. They head down the rooftop, separating to their own rooms.
She rested on her bed. The window was open, showing the stars of the night sky. They seemed brighter than last time, as if her world had become more colourful.
Camellia Cookie… She thought. Maybe I do… love you too.
The morning was new and the dew had begun to form on the leaves. The rays shone through the curtains of the window, waking up the Cookie. She rubbed her eyes and yawned, getting up from the bed and fixing it before changing to her old outfit. It was time to leave.
She left the room, where Camellia Cookie was waiting. A somber look was on his face. He knew he'd miss her.
“Good morning, Caramel Arrow Cookie.” He said.
“Good morning. I'm sure you know what time it is.”
“Yes, it's time for you to leave.” His tone held sadness in it, but it wasn't completely such.
“Are you going to accompany me to the port?”
“Of course.”
“Great. Let's go, then.” On the caravan, they started to head for the port. Using this time, they converse as much as they can, before she had to leave. They reached the port, and she went aboard an airship.
“I'll visit you again, don't worry.” Camellia Cookie said before they took off.
“I'm glad you will.” She smiled. He smiled back. They waved goodbye. The airship lifted into the air, making Camellia Cookie smaller and smaller, until he became but a speck. After the airship landed, she made her way back to the kingdom, with the help of a horse renter she had paid for.
They arrive at the kingdom. She petted the horse, and watched the renter leave with the horses. She turned around, facing the guards at the gates.
“The First Watcher! You're back.” said one of them.
“Yes, I am.” She replied.
“How was your vacation?” asked the other.
“It was… great.” She smiled.
“That's great to know. We'll let you in, just wait a moment.” The guards alerted the ones inside. They lowered the gates, letting Caramel Arrow Cookie in.
Quickly, she made her way to the barracks and fixed her bag, putting it back where it once was. She unrolled the painting given to her and hanged it on the wall. She left for the Black Citadel to inform the King of her return. On her way to the throne, Choco Gelato Cookie noticed her.
Choco Gelato Cookie gasped. “Caramel Arrow Cookie! That was a rather short vacation.”
“A lot has happened, actually.”
“Like…?”
She blushed. “It's not worth mentioning.”
Choco Gelato Cookie snickered, having a feeling about what happened. “I see, hmhm. Well, go on your way.”
“Is His Majesty there?”
“Like he usually is.”
“Thank you.” Choco Gelato Cookie watched the First Watcher disappear around a corner, grinning widely.
“Oh, you…”
“Your Majesty,” She bowed as soon as she entered his presence. “I have returned. Has anything happened while I was gone?”
“We are as prosperous as ever, Caramel Arrow Cookie. I'm glad to see you're safe.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty. I will return to my post.”
“Take care of yourself. If ever you need another break, do not be afraid to ask.”
“Yes, my King.” She bowed and left, heading for the walls. She went back atop them. She missed the sound of snow underneath her feet, and the white land of the Dark Cacao Kingdom.
“COO COO!” A pigeon? Is that…? The pigeon landed near her feet. It was in a knitted sweater. She kneeled down and the bird dropped a piece of rolled paper onto her hand. She unrolled it and read its contents:
Dear Caramel Arrow Cookie,
I know it hasn't been long, but I already miss you, so I wrote this letter. I just want you to know that you have changed my life, and for the better. I plan to come by someday, maybe next month. Make sure to remember me, okay?
Love, Camellia Cookie.
“Love, huh?” She smiled, rolling the paper again and keeping it in her pocket. “Hey, there, little one.” She reached her hand out.
“COO COO!” The bird tweeted. It flew onto her hand.
“Let me write something back. Come with me, little bird.”
“COO!” She swiftly made her way back to the barracks and began writing a letter back.
Dear Camellia Cookie,
I saw your letter. I miss you too. And don't worry, I'll always remember you. I'll ensure that you get the best treatment when you come back.
She paused. Then, she continued with a smile.
Love, Caramel Arrow Cookie
