Gyuvin was sick and tired of this. Why did his boyfriend not want him to meet his family? Ricky had met his family before and that had gone ok. They hadn’t been happy he was dating a man and one with piercings and tattoos at that but they had accepted it and more or less welcomed Ricky into their family. Even if they mostly referred to him as his best friend. Ricky’s family was like ten times more accepting, so why did he not get to meet them. Why did he never get to go to Ricky’s house, why was he like this.
„Kim Ricky, I’m really mad at you“, he voiced his feelings to the black haired guy who just stared at him, blinking. „Why don’t you want me to meet your family“
„You were busy with Gunwook“, Ricky answered as if that was a good enough excuse. As if Gyuvin wouldn’t leave everything if Ricky only said a word.
„Ricky, do you not want me to meet your family?“, Gyuvin asked more empathatically this time.
„It’s not that“ Ricky avoided eye contact.
„Then what is it? Because what I am getting from you is that you don’t think we are serious enough for me to meet your parents.“ Gyuvin was now pleading, he was hurt. Was giving his all to Ricky not enough for him to know he was committed to him or did Ricky not want to commit?
„It’s really not that, Qubing.“ Rick sighed, „I don’t want you to meet my mom, because last time it was annoying as fuck and today with my uncle it would have been even worse.“
„So, I’m annoying to you?“ Gyuvin asked genuinely offended.
„You are not understanding me“, Ricky was getting frustrated too. „I see my mom in person one time a year if I am lucky. I don’t want to spend my entire time with her translating between you and her.“
„You don’t have to translate, I speak English“ Gyuvin practically shouted.
„I do, Qubing, I just want to spend time with my family, I don’t get to see them like ever and I don’t want to share my time or focus, ok?“
Gyuvin had to take a big breath. „I understand that.“ he said measured. „I think if we continue this conversation I’ll get even more mad and say stuff I’ll regret, so I’ll go to bed now and we’ll talk about it again tomorrow.“
Ricky nodded. „I love you Qubing“, he called after the brunet as he left.
„I love you too.“ Gyuvin said knowing he’d regret it if he didn’t answer.
The next day Gyuvin went to breakfast with Ricky. The atmosphere was tense. It was only the two of them and that really didn’t help.
„Let’s just get it over with“ Ricky said once they both had their breakfast plates in front of them.
Gyuvin sighed he wasn’t really ready to talk about it yet but postponing the conversation would only make it worse. „I understand what you are saying about seeing your family only rarely and that when I’m there you can’t focus as well on your mom.“
Ricky nodded waiting for Gyuvin to continue.
„But please also understand that I feel really shitty about you always finding excuses to not take me with you and that it makes me feel like you don’t like me the way I do you.“ he said.
Ricky nodded again. „I understand that and I’m sorry I didn’t communicate properly with you, I just had a hard time properly telling you why I don’t want you to join me and my family, I didn’t want to hurt you, but I guess I did anyway.“
„You did.“ Gyuvin agreed. „I still want to meet your mom and I hope you’ll give me the chance to soon“.
„I also want you to meet her again, just not when I have so little time.“ Ricky paused. „Once the contract is up, ok? We‘ll go to LA for longer and you’ll meet her and see my house. Does that sound good to you?“
Gyuvin nodded. „Do you want me to learn Chinese? You said yesterday that translating is annoying and I know you don’t speak English at home.“
Ricky thought about the offer a bit before answering. „It would be really nice if you got a bit conversational, I know it’s probably hard but it would help me out a lot.“
„Ok, I’ll try, I can’t promise that I’ll be any good by the time we visit but I’ll do my best“, Gyuvin reached for Ricky’s hand over the table. They intertwined their fingers resting their hands in the space between.
„That’s ok“ Ricky assured. And it was, even if Gyuvin still wanted desperately to meet Ricky’s family again, he knew that this time Ricky wouldn’t flake on him again and he’d try to make their next visit as easy on his boyfriend as possible even if he had to learn another language for that.
