A particular yokai cat looked like an umbrella yokai from a distance, her reddish fur dotted with dark spots like a tattered umbrella. She was owned by an old man that ran a general store and she had been given to him by his son after his son was unable to care for the yokai cat. Her name was Carolyn and the old man never changed that name because it seemed rude to do so.
Carolyn liked to hop around the store and scare customers as they rounded the aisles. Sometimes she would leap up and lick their face with her oily tongue which didn’t hurt them but it left a nasty mess. The old man would have to give discounts on their groceries if that ever happened. He’d scold Carolyn for that particular annoyance but in true cat fashion she never listened. She’d just lick the old man’s face in response.
He’d gotten used to it after a while. He’d wash off his face and affectionately wonder what he was supposed to do with her and her naughtiness. But then she’d hop around and entertain the children so everyone smiled when they saw the general store umbrella yokai cat.
