Work Text:
Pudge and June are on a date. Pudge had promised a steak dinner, a promise made after they got into yet another argument. June wondered sometimes why they were even together, since they were always fighting. This time, it was over a male friend, Chester, hanging out with June.
“What would you two like to order today?”
June snapped out of her thoughts. A horse waiter was standing by June and Pudge’s table, holding a notepad.
“I would like a ribeye cooked medium, please,” Pudge ordered, bowing in his seat.
“And I would like a 6-ounce steak cooked well done,” June asked.
The waiter wrote down their orders and nodded in acknowledgment.
“Ok, we'll get back with both of your food.” He said as he headed to the kitchen.
Now came the hard part.
June silently watched Pudge from across the table, sipping on her iced tea. Pudge heard a notification from his phone. He pulled it up to look at it, making June slightly mad.
“Pudge. Please get off your phone.” June begged.
Pudge ignored her, too busy reading the notification. June got more frustrated.
“I swear if you don't put away your-”
“OK!” Pudge complied, a little too loudly.
Some people were looking at them. June’s cheeks turned red with embarrassment.
“Could you not shout so loud?” June asked.
Pudge let out a loud sigh and put his paws on his face. This wasn't going well.
“Why does this happen every time we're in public?” Pudge grumbled.
June felt like asking the same question. This relationship had certainly lost its spark. Yet, neither she nor Pudge wanted to be apart from one another.
After the date, June was home by herself, already missing Pudge. They didn't like being around one another, yet felt sad when they were apart.
June started tearing up. Why did she feel so close yet so distant from her lover?
