Work Text:

Beep, beep, beep…

The incessant beeping of a heart monitor, the sound of my own haggard breaths, the roaring cacophony of the city below. Is this how I'm going to die? Alone in an eerie hospital room? To die hearing the sound of my own heart failing me and giving out? How cruel it is so. Dying by my own hands would be better than this pitiful scene.

Beep, beep, beep…

I can hear the "nurses" outside talking in indistinctive murmurs. The same "nurses" who promised to cure me of my abnormality. The same "nurses" who took my sister apart from the inside-out. The same monsters that ruined our lives while we were at our lowest. I hate them. I hate them all. I wish they could suffer the same fate as me. To die in solitude with no one to find solace in.

Beep, beep, beep…

I never thought my life would end like this. I dreamt about having a big, huge house for me and my sister and no one else. We would have the most coziest beds ever, and a huge ball pit for us to play in. I dreamt about the "doctors" curing my illness and living a normal life. I dreamt about us being rich so my sister wouldn't have to pay for my medicine. I dreamt—

The creaking open of a door suddenly echoed in the room, and I immediately dart my eyes towards the sound. The hospital curtains blocked my direct view of the door. I saw someone's silhouette through the opaque curtains. Why would someone enter this room? Did they decide I couldn't be allowed to die peacefully so they ordered a lackey to kill me? Cowards.

The doctor, er, pharmacist? Couldn't tell you— sat on the chair beside my bed. I thought he was here to kill me, what?— is he gonna tell me a sob story about how they ordered to kill me or else they, like, I don't know—kill his family, or something? Whatever, I'm going to die either way.

"…You're probably wondering why I'm here—or, who I am, really."

Yeah. Obviously.

"In truth, I am not here to kill you, Kim."

Wow, what a "Samaritan".

"…I'm here to save you."

…Sorry, what?

"For the past 4 years, I've been researching a remedy for mortality—the ability to live forever—immortality. And finally, after years of agonizing effort, I concocted a mixture able to extend our lives until the inevitable collapsing of the earth."

Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep…

"With just a shot of this mixture, I can help you avenge your sister. In exchange, I want you to work under me as a bodyguard."

Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep beep, beep…!

"Don't you want to take revenge, Kim?"

With every ounce of the strength I had left, I strained a single word out of my mouth,

"…Please."

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BE—
