Work Text:

Cass. Captain of the Islanders soccer team at their school. Popular girl. It made Cynikka sick. She knew Cass wasn’t perfect, yet everyone treated her like she was. They treated her like an angel sent from heaven.

“Cynikka! Pay attention to the ball.” Cass put her arms on her hips, scowling. They were in the middle of soccer practice but Cynikka must’ve zoned out. Her hatred for her captain really drove her insane.

“Whatever.” Rolling her eyes, Cynikka chased after the ball. She wanted to prove to Cass she wasn’t some stupid poor burnout. Her eyes were set after the goal; she didn’t care what stood in her way. The edges of her vision blurred and blurred until she only saw the ball and the goal. However, someone must’ve been chasing after her because she bumped into a human-sized thing.

“Fuck-” Cynikka tripped, rolling on the grass. She tried standing up, but a sting of pain stunted her. A glance at her knee almost stopped her breathing completely. She could see her fucking bone. There was blood everywhere on her leg. The entire team slowly surrounded her, with Cass sprinting towards her with worry in her face. Of course the perfect angel is first to attend to her wounds.

“I got you.” Cass lifted Cynikka up, carefully bringing her to the locker rooms. When they reached the benches, she carefully set Cynikka down and began searching for the first aid kit.

“Wha- why are you helping me?” Cynikka squeezed her eyes closed. She didn’t want to see herself in such a vulnerable position. She leaned against the lockers, steadying her breathing.

“You’re my teammate , idiot. Of course I have to help you.” Cass kneeled down and set the first aid kit down on the floor. She took out the disinfectant and started patting Cynikka’s wound with it. “Let me know if it hurts a bit too much and I’ll stop.”

“You know what I meant, Cass. The last we really talked, you called me a fucking freak and told me to get away from you.” Cynikka opened her eyes to stare into Cass’s green eyes. Those green eyes held memories. Memories Cynikka wanted to forget.

“I- I know, Cyn. What I did..” Cass sighed in frustration. But this wasn’t frustration with Cynikka. This was frustration with herself. “What I did was unforgiveable and I understand if you never want to talk with me again. But I feel like I’ve changed and I just want you to know that.”

Cass dropped the bloodied cotton pad and picked up the bandages.

“I know you’ve changed, Cass. That’s the fucking problem. I haven’t. I’m still the burnout freak you broke up with and left stranded. I’m still as selfish and careles-”

Cass’s soft lips touched Cynikka’s. She held her wounded teammate’s face, leaning in. Cass let go, looking for an answer in Cynikka’s cloudy gray eyes.

“Well, what the hell,” Cynikka shrugged, grabbing Cass’s face back. Cynikka tried leaning in more, but her leg was in a weird position and she felt that painful sting again.

“Aah, shit.” The two nervously giggled, trying to shuffle and move into a position easier for Cynikka. They were sat, leaning against the lockers, kissing. Cynikka’s tongue must’ve brushed against their lips, tasting vanilla. Cass still had the lip balm she gifted her all those years ago. Suddenly, a yell echoed throughout the room.

“Cass! Cynikka! Are you two good?”

The two let go, blushing and pushing each other away.

“Is your leg good? I’m gonna go back to- well, captaining . You can stay here to rest.” Cass stood up, inspecting Cynikka’s now-bandaged leg. “I’m coming Sap!”

Cynikka sat, watching as Cass’s perfect ponytail swung as she ran.
