Chapter 1: chapter 1

Chapter Text

It was an early summer day at the Armed Detective Agency. The sun was out and spilled into the busy office through the large windows. This morning started off with many files from the police being sent over; asking for information on the latest case that had been solved. Many of the agency members had details pertaining to the case, so everyone needed to do their part and get these files done by this evening. Kunikida was, as expected, working hard, getting things done quickly. With a hot drink by his desk, his focus was laser sharp.
Except, not that laser sharp. The agency was rather noisy, with people rushing to and fro gathering files and such. People were discussing business related matters, and typically Kunikida would be able to ignore the commotion very well. However, there was one specific coworker who was slacking off, and it bugged Kunikida to no end.
Dazai had been on his phone for the past hour and a half. When Kunikida walked past his desk, he stopped and said, “Dazai! Have you started on the police’s files?”
“Oh, Kunikida!” He exclaimed, tearing his eyes from his phone. He gripped his arm. “Look,” He pulled him closer to the phone screen.
Kunikida grunted and pulled away from his grip. “What in the world am I looking at?”
“I’m in line for the Labubu drop,” He said, “See, there’s fifteen minutes until the restock. I’m using my phone because - It was so frustrating, Kunikida! Last time I used the work computer, but once the timer hit, the server crashed! I’d been waiting for five hours!”
Kunikida adjusted his glasses, trying to make sense of the app. “I’m sorry, in line for what?”
“Labubus,” He said, as if it was common knowledge. “I wouldn’t expect you to know, since you live under a rock,”
Ranpo came up from behind and popped his head in the conversation. “What are we whispering about over here?” He grinned mischievously at the two.
“We’re not whispering,” Kunikida said, giving Ranpo space. “Dazai’s wasting time when he should be focusing on getting work done. They want the files by tonight, Dazai, and I don’t want us to get in trouble just because of you.”
“Ranpo, have you heard of Labubus?” Dazai said, smiling excitedly.
He tilted his head. “Nope.”
His eyes widened. “Really? I thought you would,”
Ranpo said, “Let’s ask the kids. Atsushi! Kyouka! Come here!” He waved them over.
“What’s up?” Atsushi said, with Kyouka behind him.
Dazai asked, “Have you guys heard of Labubus?”
Atsushi furrowed his eyebrows. “Labubu? I don’t think I’ve heard of that before,” he looked at Kyouka.
Kyouka said, face unchanging, “I know of Labubus,”
“You do?” Atsushi and Kunikida exclaimed.
“Yes,” She nodded, “From my understanding they’re quite popular online,”
Atsushi laughed. “That’s funny! How do you know about this trend before I do? You’re hardly on the internet,”
She asked Dazai, “Do you have one?”
“I’m trying to get one,” He said, beckoning her over to see his phone. “I’m hoping to get this light blue one, see?”
Irritated, Kunikida clapped his hands once. “Come on, we’ve all got work to do. Get moving, get moving,” He practically shooed everyone away from Dazai’s desk. “And Dazai, whenever that timer or whatever runs out I expect to see you working.”
“Two more minutes!” He exclaimed.
