Strings in the dark

Summary:

They were sinners.
bloodshot eyes, red-stained hands, and bleeding hearts reaching for understanding. And even though they were both lost somehow they found each other. A fragile petal bloomed between them, a frail understanding that defied their odds and brought them closer to one another the same way a moth is drawn to a flame.
He wouldn’t call it love, something like that didn’t suit monsters who haunted the underworld. Yet from the beginning, one heart had reached for another, and trust above all else was born.

Chapter Text

They were sinners.
bloodshot eyes, red-stained hands, and bleeding hearts reaching for understanding. And even though they were both lost somehow they found each other. A fragile petal bloomed between them, a frail understanding that defied their odds and brought them closer to one another the same way a moth is drawn to a flame.
He wouldn’t call it love, something like that didn’t suit monsters who haunted the underworld. Yet from the beginning, one heart had reached for another, and trust above all else was born.

If you asked them what they were, they’d say Partners . The word would leave their lips with a knowing smirk, a quiet acknowledgment of something deeper. Maybe it was partnership, maybe it was years of understanding, but neither dared to call it what it may be after all love was a funny thing the moment you acknowledge it you risk losing it and yet a flower bloomed born in darkness feared by light and it grew against all expectations in the hands of the ones nurturing it, the ones who knew what matters .
And yet, not all things are meant to be.

Dazai knew this better than anyone.
Some flowers exist only to nurture the ground, feeding others before they wither. And yet, as his eyes locked onto burning azure, he forgot to breathe.

It had been four years.
Four years, and still, nothing could steal his breath like Nakahara Chuuya.

Confidence radiated from every step as Chuuya strode onto the battlefield, eyes sharp a storm brewing behind them. His opponent stood frozen, waiting for the crushing force of gravity to strike. Dazai’s fingers twitched with a long-buried instinct the thrill of fighting alongside him, the rhythm they had perfected over years of trust .

But he held back,he had to after all it was Dazai who had driven Chuuya out of the Mafia.
And it was Dazai who had driven him away from him.

He had been the one to sever their bond, to ensure Chuuya left with no reason to return. Because everything Dazai touched, everything he wanted, was destined to crumble the moment he held onto it. He had watched as the fire behind those blue eyes dimmed, as the weight of their past stripped Chuuya of the life he once carried so effortlessly.

But now…
Now, as Chuuya stood before him once more, that fire burned bright.
And for the first time in four years, Dazai wanted to reach for the flames again
Chuuya’s gaze locked onto his, sharp and unwavering. Then, without missing a beat, he turned to the man beside him.
“Your boss said you needed help,” he said above the chaos, a smirk playing on his lips as he leveled the ground beneath them. Behind him, the detectives surged forward, taking advantage of his grand entrance to seize control of the fight.

From a distance, Dazai stood next to Ango Sakaguchi, silently observing as the government agents and detectives secured the scene.
Ango didn’t need to look at him to understand he had known Dazai too long, had seen too much. Dazai never asked for help. He never put anything on the line for anyone.
Except for a certain redhead with a hat.

He adjusted his glasses, watching as Chuuya fought carelessly , It wasn’t surprising Ango knew the power Nakahara Chuuya holds as the fight wrap up fear washed
over the man with glasses as be still remembered the threats their division had received, the lengths thé division had gone to in order to erase Chuuya and the information they possessed, they tried to plan, tried to play Dazai in order to controle him thru Chuuya , but it never amounted to anything. Because as long as the Demon Prodigy reigned, as long as he held the underworld by the throat, no one could touch
what’s his no one can face his wrath.

No one, except maybe….
The ghost of a smile tugged at his lips as Chuuya marched past the chaos, straight toward Dazai. And without hesitation, he grabbed him by the throat.

“You fucking asshole.”
The detectives swarmed immediately, yanking Chuuya back before he could do any real damage.
“Chuuya, this is a Port Mafia executive,” Kunikida scolded, already on high alert. “Leave him alone.”
Dazai only smiled, waving lazily as he retreated toward a sleek black car waiting in the clearing.
“Maybe next time, slug” he called back. “I’ve got work to do.”
The air around Chuuya pulsed with restrained gravity as he glared at the retreating car, frustration evident in every tense muscle. He turned toward Ango, eyes still burning.
“What the hell was he doing here?” His voice was low, dangerously steady. “You know we’re at war with the Mafia, damned glasses.”

Ango stayed silent for a moment, choosing his words carefully. The truth had no place here—not when Dazai held his life on a scale, not when every move he made was calculated.

“We were discussing old files,” he said finally.

He didn’t mention what those files were about.
Didn’t mention the way Dazai’s voice wavered at the mere mention of Chuuya’s name.
Didn’t mention the pain behind brown eyes that only flickered to life when he was involved.
Because some truths were better left unsaid.

Through all the chaos, intelligent green eyes flashed behind glasses as Ranpo Edogawa observed the scene. A smirk spread across his face as a plan started to form in his mind, perhaps a bit of understanding could move things forward with their little treaty and a maybe just maybe help their friend.
