Work Text:
Snuggled into Nana’s bosom was Lambo, nightcap slipping off his curly head. Beside him was I-pin, her little hands clasping her pillow tight with Fuuta’s arm sprawled over her. By far, Lambo made the most noise, his snoring loud and clear covering the sounds of Fuuta’s sleep-mumblings. Throughout the night, the four of them sleep peacefully, lending each other body heat and leaving their impressions into the mattress.
Nana was always the first to rise. Rubbing the sleep out her eyes, she quickly washes her face with cold water and pats it dry before ambling downstairs and into the kitchen. If there are any dishes from last night, Nana washes them first then attends to rinsing the knives or spoons or bowls she’ll need for today’s breakfast. When she finishes up, she washes her hands, drying them on the fish-themed towel Imeitsu had given her years ago, when he’d last visited her.
By the time Nana’s finally started, Fuuta is stumbling downstairs. He manages a weak ‘good morning maman’ though the sleep in his eyes keeps him disorientated. After bumbling around for a bit, the sleep clears from his eyes and a much more enthusiastic ‘good morning maman!’ comes from him. Fuuta asks if he can help and Nana always says yes, reminding him to mind his fingers when he chops up spring onions or carrots.
Today, they’re having omelettes and Nana is shredding the cheese. The eggs have already been cracked and whisked and the cheese was being difficult. Fuuta giggled beside her, he’d gotten so used to her by now, it was kinda scary. He offered to do it for Nana and Nana gave a huff before handing it over to Fuuta.
Soon, they were in full swing. A comfortable silence settled over the two as they worked around the kitchen, perfectly communicating with each other without a single word. Nearing the end of their omelette making I-pin bounded down the stairs a quick ‘good morning’ in a loud, clear voice, much clearer than Fuuta’s.
Without being asked, I-pin brought out the plates and, on a second thought, grabbed 2 tablecloths. Between the red one with little lions and the blue one with orange fishes, she judged which one would make a better tablecloth for this morning. Eventually, she settled on the red one with little lions. In one quick swoop, the tablecloth perfectly covered the table. Nana praised her skill and I-pin blushed, not used to Nana’s easy coming compliments.
In the time it took I-pin to decide on a tablecloth, Nana and Fuuta had already finished the omelettes and Fuuta assisted I-pin in setting the table.
Like clockwork, Lambo came down. His loud, boisterous voice bounced against the walls of the house as he announced that the morning had officially started. He rushed down the stairs, claiming the biggest and most delicious omelette for himself. As always, Nana would remind him that they had to wait for everybody before anybody could eat. Lambo would whine and head back upstairs to wake Tsuna up. His voice could be heard right before the tears as he rushed back out of Tsuna’s room, Reborn smirking in the background.
Snot gushed from his nose as his shrill cry pierced the ears of everybody. Nana carried him up, rocking him back and forth. She soothed him until the only sound left were the occasional sniffles. Soon after, Tsuna's surprised scream could be heard. Reborn had woken him up, as always.
Within minutes, everybody was crowded around the table enjoying their breakfast. Lambo stuffed his into his mouth, chewing as much as his big mouth could fit, threatening to eat Fuuta’s. Reborn was enjoying himself with a nicely brewed espresso and Tsuna’s mouth was full of food. I-pin delicately ate hers, careful not to cause a mess like her cow themed counterpart.
Nana had long since finished hers and was content watching her family of mismatches. How long had her table ever been so full? How long had it been since she’d cooked for more than two? Even when Iemitsu was here, breakfast had never been this lively.
Fuuta caught her staring and gave her a questioning glance. Nana only replied with a smile and a ruffle of her little boy’s hair. Nana would be forever grateful for her full house because everyday her family gathered around the table was a day much less lonely.
