The morning sun poured through the open windows of the royal bedchamber, casting a golden glow across the room. Ariel stirred, her head nestled against Eric’s chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. A smile touched her lips as she remembered—today marked one year since they had wed aboard a grand ship, sailing into the sunset toward their new life together.
“Happy anniversary, my love,” she whispered, brushing a kiss against his cheek.
Eric’s eyes opened, warm and bright. “Happy anniversary, my darling Ariel.”
She sat up and reached for a small, neatly wrapped package. “I have something for you.”
Eric unwrapped it to reveal a finely crafted brass compass, polished until it gleamed. “A compass?” he asked with a smile.
“So you’ll always find your way back to me,” she said softly.
He reached under the pillow and produced a slender velvet box. Inside lay a delicate necklace, a silver chain cradling a perfectly polished seashell.
Ariel gasped. “It’s beautiful.”
“From the shore where I first saw you,” Eric said. “So you’ll always carry the sea with you.”
After a breakfast of warm pastries, fresh fruit, and honey—still a wonder to Ariel after a year on land—she cradled their two months old baby daughter, rocking her gently before Carlotta arrived.
“I’ll take care of her today,” Carlotta promised, smiling.
Ariel pressed a kiss to her daughter’s cheek before turning to Eric. He extended his hand.
“Ready for a day in the sun? Just you and me.”
She laughed, slipping her fingers into his. “And I can be part of your world.”
They strolled along the shoreline, the waves curling at their feet, until they reached the place where fate had brought them together. Eric paused, gazing at the water.
“This is where you saved my life—in more ways than one. And where I fell in love with you.”
Ariel’s eyes sparkled. “I think I was already in love with you the moment I saw you on that ship. But yes—this is where I sang to you for the first time… and where you saw me.”
Eric chuckled. “I wish you had stayed then.”
“I would have,” she teased, “but your dog frightened me.”
“Well, Max is back at the castle now,” Eric said with a grin. “So it’s just the two of us.”
They kissed deeply, the sound of the waves their only witness.
From there, they wandered through the kingdom. The townsfolk greeted them warmly, thrilled to see their beloved prince and princess celebrating their first year together. Eric bought Ariel a small cone of ice cream, which made her laugh as the cold sweetness touched her lips.
In the bustling marketplace, Eric took her hand and began to dance, just as he had on their very first date. Ariel laughed and followed his lead, twirling among the cheering crowd.
Later, they ended the day on a quiet boat ride, drifting beneath a sky painted in sunset colors. This time, there were no interruptions—only the soft sound of water and the warmth of their kiss.
When they returned to the castle, the staff had arranged a small celebration in their honor. Ariel looked at Eric, her heart full.
The celebrations at the castle eventually quieted, and the moon rose high over the sea. Later, when the corridors had grown still, Ariel and Eric slipped away to the balcony of their bedchamber.
Below them, the tide whispered against the shore, and the air carried the faint scent of salt and night-blooming flowers. Above, the stars shimmered across the dark velvet sky, their light spilling over the ocean in silver ripples.
Ariel leaned against the balcony railing, gazing upward. “It’s strange,” she murmured, “a year ago, I thought my world had already changed forever. But somehow, this year… it’s changed even more.”
Eric came to stand beside her, his arm circling her waist. “Because of our daughter?”
She smiled. “Because of everything. The baby, yes. Learning to live on land, learning each other’s ways, seeing how our worlds could fit together.” She tilted her head toward him. “When I left the sea, I never imagined how much I’d gain.”
Eric brushed his lips against her temple. “I think about it too. How one storm—and one song—brought you to me. How much has happened since that day.” He glanced upward at the constellations. “This year has been more than I ever dreamed. And if the next years are anything like this one…”
She laughed softly. “Then we’re in for an adventure.”
He grinned. “And I still mean what I said this morning—we’ll see the world together. There are kingdoms across the seas that will amaze you. Someday, we’ll take our daughter, and she’ll see everything too.”
Ariel’s gaze softened as she looked at him. “You’ve already shown me more than I ever imagined. And not just the human world—you’ve shown me love, patience, home.”
Eric held her closer, and together they watched the stars trace their slow arcs across the sky. The waves rolled endlessly beneath them, carrying the same rhythm as their hearts.
Finally, Ariel rested her head on his shoulder. “Happy anniversary, Eric.”
“Happy anniversary, my Ariel.”
The waves rolled endlessly beneath them, carrying the same rhythm as their hearts.
Ariel tilted her head back, her eyes scanning the night sky.
Eric followed her gaze. “There it is,” he whispered.
“Which one?”
He pointed to a bright cluster of stars, forming a curve that dipped low toward the horizon. “Mariner’s Crown. Sailors say it leads them safely home. My parents used to point it out when I was little. They told me it was for travelers—those who journey far but always find their way back to where they belong.” Eric smiled, his thumb brushing over her hand. “And now it’s ours.”
“Every year on this night,” Ariel said, “I’ll look for it. No matter where we are. And I’ll remember this night.”
Eric’s voice was warm and certain. “And I promise you, Ariel, every anniversary will be as special as this one—no matter what seas we sail or lands we cross.”
She leaned into him, the silver light of the Mariner’s Crown reflecting in her eyes. “Then we’ll never lose our way.”
And with the sea singing below and the stars burning bright above, they knew their first year was only the beginning of forever.
They stayed there for a moment longer, memorizing the stars and the sound of the sea. Then, hand in hand, they turned toward their chamber—toward sleep, dreams, and the countless years ahead.
And far above them, the Mariner’s Crown gleamed, keeping watch over the prince and the mermaid who had found their way home to each other.
