Chapter 1: Is this all worth it?

Chapter Text

Look, Yeosang hadn’t meant to get pregnant. Truly! He didn’t mean to, just because he wasn’t against the prospect of having a child, didn’t mean he just hooked up for that reason.

Yeosang had picked up a job at a law firm, and said law firm was having trouble finding people to hire. So when he was hired, he was immediately given a stack of papers and got to work. Leading him to endure long hours of signing papers, talking to clients, and writing emails. It wasn’t like he was dying, not being sexually active, but it was typically a way he got stress out.

It wasn’t until that fateful night that things took a turn for Yeosang.

Yeosang had awoken to streams of light coming in through the window. He felt around subconsciously, looking for another source of warmth. The AC was at full blast due to the scorching summer. Yeosang groggily sat up and peeled his eyes open, looking around his vicinity. He was greeted with the sight of his bedroom, his head pounding from the alcohol of last night. Clothes were strewn across his room, and Yeosang noted that only his clothes remained, with no scent of the other male anywhere. He groaned and flopped back to lying down, facing his side table. There lay a note, most likely torn from one of his notebooks that sat on his desk.

Yeosang reached over to grab the piece of paper and skimmed over it.

Last night was lovely, thank you for the night sweetheart ;)

That was it.

Yeosang sat there in disbelief. This guy couldn’t even say a decent goodbye? “Ugh,” Yeosang scoffed. He slowly pushed himself to the edge of the bed to get up. He searched around in the crumpled-up blanket for his phone, not seeing it anywhere. He grumbled, pushing himself off the bed to search his pants. Yeosang grabbed his pants and searched his pockets, coming out victorious when he felt his phone. When he unlocked it, he was greeted with multiple notifications.

Yeosang couldn’t care less for the messages when he realized what time it was.

“Shit!” Yeosang yelled out; It was past 8 am, normally when he was supposed to clock in to work. He quickly called in that he would still arrive, while pulling on his clothes and grabbing his bag. Almost slipping while he tried to get his shoes on before dashing out the door.

It wasn’t until a few weeks later that Yeosang started to feel off, though off was an understatement. He felt like absolute shit, he’d started to feel a butt-ton of nausea these recent days. It got to the point where his coworkers were worried by how pale his complexion was becoming.

“Are you okay, Yeosang? You haven’t seemed the best lately. Are you sure you’re getting enough rest?” His coworker, Seonghwa, had asked. Seonghwa was actually the assistant of his boss, Hongjoong. It was a law firm given to Hongjoong by his father. Which Yeosang had found out 2 weeks into getting the job. There were only a handful of other lawyers, typically staying within close-knit connections.

It took Yeosang a while to stop calling Hongjoong “Mr. Kim” after he stated that calling him Hongjoong was fine. Though Yeosang rarely got the chance to talk to the older man, as he was always busy with clients and important meetings.

“Yes, Hwa-hyung, I’m fine, I’m sure it’s just the flu that’s been spreading around lately. You know how the summer flu is,” Yeosang brushed him off. “Whatever you say, Yeosang, but if it gets any worse, you'd better call in,” Seonghwa huffed, leaving his office to go back to working. Yeosang chuckled and quickly returned to typing up the email he was writing.

Yeosang quickly regretted having said that it was just the flu.

Yeosang's eyes flung wide open, welcomed by the sight of his room blanketed in shadows. He quickly darted out of bed to the bathroom. Yeosang flung the door wide open, barely making it, he retched his guts into the toilet. Kneeling over the toilet bowl with his breath coming out in short pants. “Fuck,” was all Yeosang could mutter out into the silence of his bathroom, his vanilla scent souring.

Yeosang waited a bit before finally deciding to get up and lie back down. He slowly headed out into the kitchen to grab the bucket he usually kept for mopping the floor, in case he didn’t end up making it to the bathroom the next time it happened. He sat on the edge of his bed, looking over at the clock on the side of his desk. 5:34 AM. He groaned as he flopped onto his back, staring at the ceiling. Thinking of the possibilities of what might have played a part in him puking, he was quickly dragged into sleep.

Morning came with the sound of a blaring alarm. Yeosang whined as he was pulled out of sleep, blindly darting his hand around to find where his phone was located to turn off the annoying sound. When he couldn’t find it, he huffed and dropped his arm. Opening his eyes, blearily glancing around, he tried to sit up but was quickly bombarded with a wave of nausea.

Yeosang desperately wished he could go back to sleep, to sleep through this terrible nausea, but he felt like his bladder was going to explode. Yeosang slowly pushed himself off the bed and headed towards the still-open bathroom door. But even that felt like a challenge in and of itself, he felt so tired, even though he went to bed earlier than usual the previous night.

Yeosang tried to think of what could possibly be making him feel this way, but nothing came to mind. He groaned as he slowly made his way back to his bedroom to get dressed for work. Yeosang was paid fairly well from his job at the law firm, but preferred to live in an apartment rather than a house. It felt a little less lonely that way.

Yeosang grabbed his phone as he quickly sent a text to his friend Jongho. He had met Jongho when he was studying for his law degree, meeting him at the library on campus. Jongho worked at the library there as he was the son of one of the teachers. They quickly got to know one another as Yeosang often came to study, preferring the quiet of the library compared to the rowdiness of his roommate at the time.

Yeosang quietly enters the building, making his way down the hallway into the office where he works. Thankfully, today he didn’t have to meet with any clients, mainly looking over papers that have to be filled out and signed, as well as sending emails to remind the dates of upcoming meetings to his clients.

It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that Yeosang was hit with another wave of intense nausea, though this time it wasn’t just nausea. He quickly rushed out of his office and down the hallway to the nearest bathroom. Unknowingly passing Seonghwa on the way and missing his name being called out to him.

Yeosang shoves the door open to the bathroom, flinging the door open to one of the stalls and puking straight into the toilet bowl, not even bothering to close the stall door in his wake. After blowing his guts out, he pushes his back to the stall wall and falls to the floor, dizzy from the run over here alongside the terrible fatigue that’s been weighing him down.

The squeak of the bathroom door breaks Yeosang from his dizzy spell, accompanied by the sound of heeled footsteps. Seonghwa. Yeosang whines at the thought of being seen like this, but it was too late to do anything now. Yeosang turns his head and is greeted with the sight of Seonghwa standing there. “You do know you can call in sick, right?” Seonghwa states with the most deadpan expression Yeosang has ever seen him express. Yeosang sighs, “I know...” “You’ve been sick for like the last month and a half, have you seen a doctor?” Seonghwa questions, his face turning into one of sincerity and concern. Yeosang gathers his legs up and situates his chin on top of them. “No…” Yeosang looks away as he answers, not wanting to see the look of shame most likely coming upon his face.

“Yeosang, look at me,” Seonghwa says gently. Yeosang slowly raised his head to his left, where Seonghwa was bent down next to him. “You should go see a doctor. You haven’t been feeling well, and we can all tell,” Yeosang cringes at the fact that most likely everyone knew how shitty he was feeling. “It’s either I take you to the doctor now or you promise to make an appointment and call out the rest of the week.”

Yeosang sulks, “I’ll make an appointment…” he mutters. Seonghwa sighs in relief, “Good, now go home–I don’t want you working in this state, and even Hongjoong agrees with me.” Yeosang rolls his eyes at the statement, “We know you're in love and all.” Yeosang jokes, pulling a laugh from Seonghwa. Seonghwa extends his hand out and helps Yeosang up from the floor.

“If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call or text me. We’re more than just coworkers, okay?” Seonghwa states, saying it with utmost sincerity. “I will, thank you, Hwa-hyung,” Yeosang responds, giving Seonghwa a quick side hug before making his way to his office to grab his stuff and head home.

When Yeosang arrives home, he makes his way to the couch and plummets headfirst. He was dead tired, but he had to make an appointment and get something to eat before his stomach decided to crawl out and do it itself. Yeosang grabs his phone from his back pocket, propping his chin up on the arm of the couch and opening the app for his appointments.

Yeosang sets an appointment for 11 AM tomorrow with his doctor. He sighs as he stands up from the couch to find something to eat. He looks in his fridge to see if there’s anything to eat, only coming up with a partially filled refrigerator with only a carton of milk, energy drinks, and some eggs. Yeosang wilts at the sad display; he really needs to go grocery shopping sometime soon. He decides to head down to the corner store nearby, grabbing the keys to his apartment and heading down the elevator.

Fortunately for Yeosang, it wasn’t too far of a walk. He opens the door to the sound of a small ding above his head. “Welcome in!” the cashier says warmly. Yeosang bows his head in recognition and makes his way down one of the aisles. He thinks of what to eat and comes up with a really weird craving.

The thought of strawberry jam, Nutella, and ketchup in kimbap suddenly entered Yeosang's mind, and it sounded like the best thing ever. Yeosang quickly flitted around grabbing the ingredients for it. He quickly placed the items atop the counter to pay. When Yeosang made eye contact with the cashier, he was met with the most incredulous look. “What an… interesting combination,” the cashier said with a faux smile. Yeosang nodded shyly in response, nose crinkling at the scent the cashier exuded. Typically, Yeosang wasn’t very prone to scents, but this time it bothered him. With scent blockers being mandated at his job, he didn't have to deal with the bombardments of different scents in his day-to-day life. He quickly grabbed his card to pay and made his way out.

When he got home, he laid out the seaweed and rice, adding the other three ingredients. Rolling it up and cutting them quickly to quell his ever-growing hunger. When Yeosang finally finished cutting them, he immediately popped one in his mouth. Yeosang immediately relaxes, and the room fills with the scent of sweet, alluring vanilla. It is the most delectable thing Yeosang has eaten in so long. He grabs the plate of kimbap and makes his way to his room.

Usually, Yeosang doesn’t feel the need to nest when on birth control, but the urge suddenly surged. He quickly grabbed all his nesting blankets and pillows from his spare closet, making a nest in the middle of his bed. Once finished, he grabbed his kimbap he had initially placed down and got comfy in his newly made nest. This was the best Yeosang had felt in a while, the most relaxed in so long. The thought pulled a low purr from him as he ate his meal. He slowly but surely finished and placed the empty plate to the side.

Though the thought of nesting reminded him of his heat. He usually didn’t feel the need to nest unless he had his heat or he was generally upset. Though due to the birth control he took, he didn’t have to worry about his heats unless he skipped a dose. Though normally he never felt sick like this when he did have his heats, and before Yeosang could think any further, the lull of sleep pulled him under.

When Yeosang awoke, it felt like a bus had crashed into him, reversed, and run him over again. Yeosang rolled over to his side, opening his eyes to see what time it was. 9:58. A little more than an hour before his appointment. Yeosang groaned but inevitably rose from his bed, stretching his arms and legs before getting up to get ready.

Yeosang made his way to the bathroom to brush his teeth, and when he looked in the mirror, he was greeted with the most shameful sight he had seen of himself in a while. His eye bags were darker than before, and it looked like he had gained some weight. Sighing discontentedly at the revelation, he continued his initial goal of brushing his teeth, but of course, that couldn’t go smoothly either.

When he wet his toothbrush and placed his minty toothpaste, he went to go and brush, but for some reason, the taste of the fluoride made him want to gag. Though he couldn’t just swallow it down, of course, Yeosang's luck didn’t work like that. He then continued to puke whatever remnants of last night's food that had yet to digest into the toilet next to him. Yeosang grimaced as he flushed the puke down the toilet.

He felt like a walking zombie. Yeosang couldn’t think of just what could be causing this! He had never been sick like this before, and it wasn’t like he didn’t take care of himself. Sure, he had his times when he should’ve eaten or made something that maybe shouldn’t have been consumed, but nothing to this degree!

Yeosang groaned as he made his way out of the bathroom. His eyes glanced over to his clock, 10:06. He made his way to his closet and grabbed out a black t-shirt with a Doberman on it and a pair of gray sweatpants. He felt too awful to feel the need to put anything dressy on. He ran his fingers through the red locks of his hair. He sighed as he made his way to the living room to slip on his well-worn sneakers that he’s had since forever.

Yeosang quickly slipped his way out of his apartment and made his way down to the street, not feeling like driving in this condition.

The waiting room of the doctor’s sent chills down Yeosang's arms, making him wish he had brought a light jacket of some kind. He checked in early just in case he might be able to get in a little earlier than initially scheduled. Yeosang pulled out his phone and distracted himself by reading some news articles.

It wasn’t till a little bit later that Yeosang was jolted out of his mind palace by his name being called.

“Kang Yeosang?” called out one of the nurses. Yeosang quickly leaps out of the chair he was sitting in and follows the nurse to one of the nearby rooms. He takes a seat on the examination table as the nurse asks him some questions and takes his blood pressure. “So, Yeosang-ssi, what symptoms have you been experiencing?”

“I’ve been feeling a lot of nausea these last few weeks, uh… also puking, and I’ve also been really tired.” He replies. The nurse raises an eyebrow as she taps away on the keyboard, “Have you by any chance been sexually active recently?” Yeosang furrows his eyebrows in response, “I mean, yeah, but only like once recently… but I was on birth control.” Yeosang’s face pulls into a grimace.

“Birth control can still fail sometimes. Have you taken any pregnancy tests to ensure that you aren’t?” The nurse asks politely. “No, I haven't…” Yeosang mutters out. “Well, we can do a test here if you’d like, or if you’d prefer to go and buy a test that also works.” Yeosang thinks over what he should do, and ultimately decides on an answer. He sighs before replying, “I’ll do the test you provide.”

“Great! I’ll give you a cup to pee in, and I’ll also draw some blood from you if that’s okay. The blood test will be a bit more accurate as well.” The nurse states, grabbing the supplies needed from under the sink that’s situated in the room. “I’ll take the stuff for testing, and then the doctor will come in and talk to you about it.” Yeosang nods stiffly in response, at a loss for words at the prospect that he may actually be pregnant.

..

It all passes by in a blur. It isn’t until the doctor finally comes in that he zones back in. “Hello Yeosang-ssi, I’m Doctor Yoon. You got your blood drawn and urine taken for testing, correct?” Yeosang nods in response, “Yes, I did.” Dr. Yoon hums out in response, scrolling the mouse to find, what Yeosang guessed, were the test results. Dr. Yoon finally stops scrolling. “How long ago were you sexually active, Yeosang-ssi?” Yeosang racks his brain for an answer, “About… 2 months ago maybe?” He anxiously replies. “Mhm, Okay, well, from your results, I do have to say that you are pregnant.” Dr. Yoon states.

It felt like Yeosang’s soul was sucked out of his body. What? He was… pregnant? He had never thought that… he’d be having a child. Sure, he wasn’t against having kids, but… he has no idea how to care for them. He never saw it happening any time soon, let alone at all. Yeosang felt like he was going insane, there’s no way… Yeosang was pulled from his spiral by his name being called. “Yeosang-ssi? Are you alright?” Dr. Yoon asked. Yeosang gazed back up, seeing her face full of concern. “Uh yeah… I just didn’t think…” Yeosang trailed off.

“Well, if you think you’re unable to have the child, you can go for other means-” Dr. Yoon was quickly cut off. “No! No, I’m not against… going through with it, I just… I have no idea how to take care of kids, let alone a newborn.” Yeosang confessed. Dr. Yoon's eyebrows raised in shock, but she quickly schooled her expression. “Well, there are classes for becoming a parent. They may not be typically for the one carrying though you can still take them. If you want, I can provide you with an address to one?”

It was Yeosang's turn to be surprised; he didn’t even know those classes existed. Though, then again, he didn’t even think that being pregnant would ever exist for him, so what did he know? “Yes… That- that would help a lot, thank you, Dr. Yoon.” Yeosang responds earnestly. “Anytime, Yeosang-ssi, I’ll print the papers of the testing we did today. I also recommend going to get an ultrasound when you can, preferably sometime soon. If you’d like, I can set an appointment for one with a nearby ultrasound clinic.” Yeosang nodded in response, “Yes, if you could do that, I’d appreciate it.” Dr. Yoon hummed in response, “Would Thursday at 10 AM work for you, Yeosang-ssi?” “Yeah, that’s fine, Dr. Yoon, thank you,” Yeosang replied. “Okay, all the information you’ll need will be printed up at the front desk. If you need anything, Yeosang-ssi, don’t feel afraid to forward a message to me through the front office.” Yeosang nodded and stood up from the examination table. Bowing a goodbye to Dr. Yoon as he made his way to the front.

Yeosang was in utter disbelief. How the hell did he get himself into this? He quickly grabbed the papers up front and made his way out of the doctor's office. He eventually made his way back home, sitting on the bus almost like a ghost in a haunted mansion. Even when someone sat next to him and left, he still didn’t notice.

It wasn’t till he finally entered his apartment did the realization hit him. He’s having a baby. A whole baby. What the hell was he gonna do? Yeosang pressed his back to the front door and slid down to the floor. His eyes sprang with tears. He looked down at his belly, slowly inching his hand towards it. He wasn’t showing yet, but… he would eventually. Yeosang couldn’t believe it. He had no idea how he was gonna make it work. But he’d figure it out. For his baby.

Yeosang decided to wait before telling anyone close to him, aka Seonghwa and Jongho. He felt like it’d be better to show pictures rather than just ending up spewing nonsense trying to explain. Yeosang shivered at the fact that he would have to mention that he had no idea who the father was, the memories from that night blurry now.

Shaking his head, Yeosang made his way to the couch with a bowl of ice cream in hand. Opting to relax before he could actually… see his baby. It was so surreal that he’s actually gonna have a baby. Yeosang was nervous, so nervous. What if his baby ended up having complications? What if he somehow already messed up? But… he’d actually be seeing his baby.

Having a baby meant buying clothes, getting a crib, and all the other necessities. Yeosang was scared, but… he’s bringing a life into the world. His own little creation from his own body. What would they have in common? Would they like similar things? Would his baby have his nose? Or his hair color? All the possibilities swirled around in Yeosang's mind.

His heart felt so full. Even if he was scared and not really ready. Even if the symptoms kicked him in the ass. Yeosang would brave it all for his baby.
