Work Text:
“Would you like a piece of candy, Violet?”
The woman asks, glancing up over the rim of her glasses.
“Candy? Hell yeah, sure.”
Vi smiles and nods, leaning forward in her seat. The woman plucks two pieces of chocolate from a bowl on the side table, holding her hand out. The chocolate isn’t anything special, one piece is just larger than the other. Vi takes the smaller piece.
“Thanks, doc. I’m a sucker for chocolate.”
Vi unwraps hers from the red foil it was encased in, popping it into her mouth with a soft hum of approval. The doctor keeps the other piece in her hand, her head inclined slightly as she observes Vi chewing. She looks like a cat when she does that, Vi thinks, swallowing.
“Chocolate is hard to come by in Zaun, isn’t it?”
The woman asks, clearly knowing the answer. Vi nods, leaning back in her seat again with a sigh. “Yeah, it is. Claggor and Pow loved the stuff, though. Fought over it like crazy.”
She shakes her head at the memory, smiling.
“Why did you take the smaller piece?” The doctor asks, writing something down on her notepad.
“Sorry?”
Vi blinks, the question seeming trivial.
“You like chocolate, so why did you take the smaller piece?”
The doctor repeats, gesturing to Vi.
“Oh… I thought… It’s your chocolate, you should have the bigger piece.”
Vi shrugs, feeling a bit uncomfortable now.
“I have more chocolate in the bowl, I could have gotten another piece.”
Why is this woman so obsessed with chocolate? weirdo.
“Yeah, well. Usually there isn’t more.”
Vi takes a breath, glancing off to the clock on the wall and rubbing her arm. This appointment seems long.
“You’re a very generous person, Violet.”
The woman pauses, clicking her pen and placing it on the table.
“But it is okay to do things for yourself. The chocolate is an analogy. You always seem to give the best to others, but what’s left for you?”
Damn. Vi stays silent a moment, her shoulders slumping slightly as she plays with her watch, the one Caitlyn got her so she could keep better track of the time. Vi’s never been good with time, it all blends together when you’re rotting in a concrete box.
“Violet? Are you alright?”
The doctor asks, snapping Vi out of her daze. She nods, taking a breath.
“Yeah! Yeah. I’m good. Your clock’s off.”
She gestures to the one on the wall, 12:52. Vi’s watch reads 1:00. She knows her watch is correct, because Caitlyn had very meticulously wound it while consulting another clock that also displayed the seconds, wanting it to be just right. The doctor glances at her own watch, blinking.
“Yes, I suppose it is.”
She hums, uncrossing her legs and standing from her chair.
“Unfortunately, our time’s out for today. Think about what we’ve gone over, Violet. Do something for yourself. Gods know you deserve it.”
Vi nods as she stands, letting the doctor walk her to the door. Once it’s opened, it reveals Caitlyn sitting in a waiting room chair, frowning at the monstrous thing that’s supposed to be a sweater she’s attempting to knit. Cait looks up, a smile spreading across her lips at the sight of her wife.
“How was your session?”
She asks, glancing between Vi and the doctor. “She’s doing well.”
The woman smiles and nods, glancing to Vi.
“Yeah… So, you wanna stop by the store? I’m thinking we do ice cream for dinner, chocolate. The one with the chips.”
Vi responds after a moment, lopsided grin on her face as she scratches the back of her neck. Caitlyn quirks a brow.
“That doesn’t meet any nutritional requirements, Violet.”
Despite her stern reply, She can’t quite hide the amused quirk of her lip.
“I know, cupcake. I just… Haven’t had ice cream in a while.”
Caitlyn huffs softly, gathering her things.
“Whatever you would like, my love.”
Vi’s heart does a little flip in her chest when Cait kisses her on the cheek. It always does that when Caitlyn’s around. The doctor smiles, silently heading back into her office.
Vi and Caitlyn have lots of ice cream for dinner.
