Work Text:

‘Just another day in Nevermore.’ Wednesday thought while resting on her bed, just a few hours shy before starting her sleep. It has been a rather uneventful day: classes, practicing her hobbies, writing, and even some spare time to read a few chapters from a novel she began a few weeks back. Even if she loves being involved in murder-mystery thrills there was no real reason for her not to enjoy a peaceful evening.

Although it may be too peaceful.

Without realizing she already spent all of her options about what to do to pass the awkward amount of time before closing the day.

Before deciding what to do to mitigate her oncoming boredom the door opened, and a chirpy familiar figure went through. Wednesday didn’t bother to look up knowing exactly who it was.

“Hello, roomie!” the salute came from her colorful schoolmate and unofficial best friend who already sat on an empty spot in Wednesday’s bed. A year ago, she would’ve been violently kicked out for going a step beyond from trespassing personal boundaries, but nowadays she was wordlessly allowed to do such things.

“Hello, Enid.” A stoic façade accompanied a seemingly forced reply from the Adams. “Too much fun with the pack?”

“Nah, it’s a night off.” She said while holding her hands behind her back and looking at her roommate with a dash too much joy. “Besides, I have a surprise for you…”

The playful wiggle the werewolf gave her also demanded the girl to guess what she was hiding.

“You broke up with Bruno?”

“No, silly! How would I have that behind me?”

“I gave you my best shot.” Wednesday’s attention was fully on her friend.

“Fine.”

Enid finally revealed what was in her hands and it was her own cellphone.

“How ecstatic… But, you really don’t want me to also drop it by accident.”

“You wouldn’t dare!” Enid feigned horror and Wednesday only raised a daring eyebrow.

“Anyhoo… that’s not what I meant. I wanted you to look at this!”

The bright screen from the unlocked phone showed a site Wednesday came to know too well by then.

“Spotify? Again?”

“Yup!”

“Enid, we already went through this and I told you that-”

“I know, I know, but I assure you you’ll like this one!”

Wednesday Addams was rather picky with her musical taste, or it was better to state that she was very antiquated with her music choices. Yes, she enjoyed symphonic accompaniment to modern songs and also danced like no other to themes from this century, but in their room, she had quite a collection of vinyl records of old music that she enjoyed very much. The agreement was that if Enid would blast her music, Wednesday might as well do.

The problem was that if the werewolf keeps hearing classical music on a daily basis, she fears that one day she’ll destroy the turntable and play frisbee with the dusty records. So, she embarked on a quest to find music they both can enjoy, which proved to be a quite difficult task.

At least, until Yoko sent her a playlist that afternoon that the Crow HAD to listen too.

Enid explained, without giving her the chance to say no again, that this was the one, and how she was listening to it while making her diligences of that day. Wednesday only took it all in, already willing to give her another chance to whatever seemingly one-sided music she picked, but she wasn’t about admitting defeat like that.

“Can you at least tell me the name of my torturer?”

“Uh-um… Lord Huron.”

“As in Lord ferret?”

“The animal? How-?I don’t think so...”

“All right-”

Before she could ask for a test song, she was already offered the other half of Enid’s earbuds. She wouldn’t admit she was surprised by Enid’s brazenness, but there was some charm about it that Wednesdays couldn’t keep mad at, so she only took the earpiece while also sitting and resting her back on the bed frame.

“Ready?”

“Hit me.” Wednesday sighed waiting for a generic pop band awkwardly delving outside their comfort zone or another (endearing) try at a music the werewolf hated and wouldn’t tell her until a week passed by.

The name of the song was ‘Meet me in the Woods’, which promised something quite different from what the Addams member started hearing. At any point she expected lyrics about having a party in the woods or something alike, but she was pleasantly surprised.

I took a little journey to the unknown

And I've come back changed I can feel it in my bones

I fucked with forces that our eyes can't see

Now the darkness got a hold on me

Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

How long baby have I been away?

Oh, it feels like ages, though you say it's only days

There ain't language for the things I've seen

And the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams

The truth is stranger than my own worst dreams

Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

I have seen what the darkness does

Say goodbye to who I was

I ain't never been away so long

Don't look back them days are gone

Follow me into the endless night

I can bring your fears to life

Show me yours and I'll show you mine

Meet me in the woods tonight

The truth is stranger than my own worst dreams

Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

I have seen what the darkness does

Say goodbye to who I was

I ain't never been away so long

Don't look back them days are gone

Follow me into the endless night

I can bring your fears to life

Show me yours and I'll show you mine

Meet me in the woods tonight

A dark journey, the unknown, exploration, fear, loss, regret, and even a cuss word.

It was fresh, sounded unique, and she tapped her finger along the drums. It was also something she could dance along with if she wanted to.

She was so enthralled by the music that only when it ended she realized her best friend was looking at her, smiling and giving her a look as if she was asking if she liked the song, even though she already knew.

Enid Sinclair was surprisingly good at reading other people, but, as always, Wednesday Addams wouldn’t give her that satisfaction.

“It was ok.”

“Just that?”

“Yes.”

“Okey-dokey.” Enid wasn’t keen on pushing her luck… yet, so she silently claimed victory on finding common ground on something. “So…”

“So?”

“It’s a little late to go out and too early to sleep” Enid pointed out. “Mind if I put another song?”

As just another hundred times before, Wednesday didn’t have a snarky response or a rebuttal, an excuse or a sarcastic comment, or really a reason not to accept.

“Wouldn’t be the worst thing.”

Enid excitedly closed the space between them and sat next to her while scrolling through the band’s discography and talking about the myriad of songs and which were her favorites. Wednesday sent daggers to her through her gaze but went unnoticed. Like a lot of times before, she just accepted the same behavior she would’ve objected to before Nevermore.

They bumped shoulders, and Wednesday pointed at a song’s name that caught her attention.

Not Dead Yet

“Oh, that’s a good one!”

Wednesday expected a lengthy explanation on the hows and whys, but her friend just pushed play and let the song carry both of them away.

Just another day in Nevermore.

Notes:

I originally wanted to write something long that delved a little more into the personalities of these two, but then again I'm too rusty and I haven't written a small fic in a while, so, here it goes. Enjoy.
