Episode: Hong Kong egg tarts - the love of my love

[A little jingle plays as the video starts with Ava standing behind a familiar kitchen island, wearing a brightly patterned apron with “Other Moms’ Recipes” on the front. She smiles and waves]

“Hey everyone! So we finally recovered from the last episode -"

[Title card, haunted text: Last time on Other Moms’ Recipes]

[Montage from the last episode: Ava and Camila standing behind the island: Camila, smiling brightly, "The recipe I’ve brought today is tortilla de patatas from my mom, who is a big fan of the show-” “Hi Mom!” Ava giggles; Ava whining over prepping the potatoes as Camila shares a look with someone off-camera; Camila coaching Ava through the flipping process by practicing on a pan with a towel inside; at the stove, Camila successfully flipping hers while Ava holds her own pan, screaming; end shot is a still of Ava, apron splattered with potatoes and eggs, Camila holding her perfectly flipped and plated tortilla, and Beatrice with a bucket of cleaning supplies]

“- though apparently there are special pans so you don’t have to do the whole flipping thing?!? Cam’s on my shit list for that. But anyway. I’m so, so, sosososo -"

[Title card, in jaunty text with a picture of Mary’s face: "Eat a vegetable for every time she says ‘So’”]

“- SO soso excited for today’s recipe, because! We’re finally featuring my favorite person in the world."

[Ava gestures to her side, grinning wide and expectant. There’s a soft, resigned sigh from off-screen, then Beatrice steps into the frame and stands next to Ava. She’s wearing a tank top with a rainbow and "The power of friendship” written in cursive on the front. Ava bites her lip as she looks her over; nudges Beatrice with her hip]

Beatrice, monotone recitation: “Hello, I’m Beatrice, I’m here to bring the power of friendship.”

[She looks plaintively at Ava]

Beatrice: “Must I really -”

Ava, pouting: “You promised.”

Beatrice, purses her lips, then: “Fine. Fine.”

[Beatrice flexes her arms, much to Ava’s loud delight. Ava jumps up to kiss Beatrice’s cheek. Beatrice sighs but a fond smile curls her lips all the same. Ava bounces on her toes and claps her hands]

Ava: “Okay, Bea, what recipe have you brought for us today?"

Beatrice, straightening: "Well, I thought perhaps we could try to make egg tarts. They’re a bit different from the Portuguese ones you like to get from that bakery -”

Ava, affronted: “Excuse me, I always have to fight you off from taking mine!”

Beatrice coughs; continues: “- in any case, these are Hong Kong style, so they’re more like proper tarts."

Ava, giggling, in a half-assed imitation of Beatrice’s accent: "Proper tarts. What about an improper tart?"

Beatrice rolls her eyes and ignores her: "When I would visit my grandparents in Hong Kong, my grandmother would always make them on the weekend. My grandfather would sometimes play a game and buy some from a bakery then mix them in with the ones my grandmother had made. Hers somehow always tasted better.”

Ava, thoughtfully: “When’s the last time you had one?”

Beatrice shrugs, gaze lowering: “Not since I was child."

[Ava watches her knowingly, then steps in close and tangles their fingers together]

Ava, quietly: "I’m glad we can make it now.”

[Beatrice takes a deep breath and nods; they share a long, loving look]

[Cut to Ava and Beatrice - now wearing an open button down over the tank top - with ingredients for the pastry laid out in front of them on the counter]

Ava, pointing severely at Beatrice: “Seriously, you gotta let me do it myself this time!”

[At the bottom of the screen: “Click here to see Beatrice 'help’ make the easiest empanadas (said no one ever)!”]

Beatrice holds her hands up: “Alright, I’ll just give you instructions.”

Ava grins and bounces on her feet: “I love when you tell me what to do.”

[Beatrice coughs suddenly as Ava reddens]

Ava, voice a touched strangled: “Moving on…”

[Montage of them cooking together: Ava grumbling at having to weigh the flour measurements; Beatrice nearly getting splattered as she holds the bowl while Ava vigorously whisks the egg mixture; “They’re so cute!” Ava giggles as they press the dough into the mini tart tins; Ava standing at the far end of the kitchen, holding her breath as Beatrice carefully places the tray of tarts into the oven]

[Close up of the finished egg tarts before cutting to the two of them at the island, each with a tart in hand. Beatrice makes to eat one but instead watches Ava bite into hers. Ava lets out an excited squeak before popping the rest into her mouth, reaches excitedly to get another one.]

Beatrice, chuckling softly and passing Ava a mug: “Don’t forget to chew, darling.”

[Ava gives her a thumbs up as she takes a sip, quickly stuffing her mouth with another tart. She blinks at Beatrice as she chews, gestures for her to eat. Watches as Beatrice takes a steadying breath; takes a bite.]

[Beatrice stills, then ducks her head suddenly, hiding her face from the camera. Ava swallows hastily and leans into Beatrice, rubs a hand up and down her back, murmurs quietly into her ear, too low to hear. After a few moments, Beatrice finally nods. Wipes at her eyes and presses a kiss to Ava’s temple, whispers something that sounds like 'I love you,’ like 'thank you’]

Ava, arm still wrapped around Beatrice: “Well, I think this is definitely a recipe we’ll have to make more often.”

Beatrice nods, smiles around new tears: “I’d like that.”

Ava, taking another tart: “Okay well, last thing: on the scale of 1 to fuck?”

Beatrice shakes her head exasperatedly, grins: “Fuck.”

[Ava laughs, kisses Beatrice on the nose. Before she can bring the tart to her mouth, however, Beatrice reaches out to forestall her. Cups Ava’s cheek with her other hand. Steps in close, leans down -]

[The video cuts just before their lips meet. Title card, in jaunty text: “See you next thyme!”]

Episode: A proper cuppa - quali-tea time with my BaeBea

[Title card: 🫖 Tea Time - Yet another spin-off series from Ava Silva]

[The video fades in with chipper, pompous music playing. Ava enters, dancing as she takes her place behind the familiar kitchen counter wearing an apron and a white wig with ringlets. She gestures energetically off-camera.]

[A heavy sigh. Then - Beatrice enters, joining Ava behind the familiar kitchen island, wearing a fake mustache, a monocle, and a resigned expression]

[Ava waves, grinning widely]

"Hi everyone! I know, I know, another series. But this one is going to be a limited run, I swear -"

[Title card, in jaunty text with a picture of Mary’s face: "Drink for every cooking series she's created since Dead Mom Recipes"]

"- but I couldn't resist! Bea took me to afternoon tea in London when we were coming back from Portugal and I get it now."

[Quick montage of pictures from social media, Ava demolishing several multi-tiered tea trays while Beatrice looks on equal parts horrified and enamored]

"But first things first! You can't have tea snacks without tea!"

[Ava spreads her arms wide and sparkles fill the screen. A set of tea canisters, an electric kettle, and a several types of teapots 'magically' appear on the kitchen island in front of her. Their accessories also 'magically' disappear]

Ava, clapping her hands: "Okay, Bea. Teach us all your ways: How do we make a perfect cuppa?"

Beatrice, smiling faintly: "Any way you like, really."

[Ava gapes in shock]

Ava, sputtering: "Wh - Bea, you have like, a 37-step process, what do you mean -"

Beatrice, shrugs: "That's simply what I prefer. Now, I won't deny that I have opinions -"

Ava, muttering: "Strong opinions."

[Title card, in small text with a picture of Camila's face: "She went on an hour-long tirade when Ava used the microwave to heat up water"]

Beatrice, gently: "- but 'perfect' is subjective. What I prefer can be very different from what you prefer."

Ava, hums: "Yeah, kinda like last night -"

Beatrice, suddenly blushing fiercely: "Ava."

[Ava pauses, studying Beatrice. Her grin widens as Beatrice's blush spreads down her neck]

"I mean, I was going to say 'like last night when we tried that new taco spot' but now I want to know what you were thinking."

[Beatrice picks up one of the canisters blindly, voice a touch higher than usual]

"So let's begin by going over the common types of tea you might see in your local grocery store..."

[Montage of Beatrice explaining the different types of teas and different ways they're brewed and served around the world. All the while, Ava is listening intently, studious and smitten]

*

[Beatrice coaches Ava through brewing a simple black tea using different temperatures and brewing times to find out what she likes. They end up with a lineup of a dozen teacups, each tea a slightly different shade and accompanied with a notecard bearing the temperature and brew time]

Ava, chuckling: "This feels like a science experiment."

Beatrice, hesitant: "A fun experiment, I hope."

[Ava nudges Beatrice's shoulder with her own]

Ava, warmly: "I always have fun with you, Bea."

Beatrice, dry: "That's not what you said -"

Ava, face turning a bright red, hisses: "Bea!"

Beatrice, slowly raising a sharp eyebrow: "- when we were studying for your physics exam. Now whose mind is in the gutter, hm?"

[Title card, in exasperated text and a picture of Mary's face mid-eyeroll: "The answer is both of them."]

[Beatrice brings out a mortar and pestle and measures out some tea as she talks]

"Tea can also be used easily in cooking. You can add it like an herb or use brewed tea in place of a broth. Or you can grind it up to use for any sort of dough, really: cookies, pasta -"

[Ava's eyes widen with possibility]

"We're gonna need more episodes."

[Title card, in exasperated text and a picture of both Mary and Cam: "We're unionizing."]

*

[Montage of the two of them grinding tea leaves and adding it to a batter to make mini-pancakes, brewing a pot of tea for a tea-infused simple syrup, and making each their own iced tea latte]

[Ava pours a generous amount of the syrup both onto the pancakes and into the latte. She attacks both with fervor, lets out a moan that makes Beatrice blush once more]

[Ava hops happily and twirls around for good measure]

"This is so good! I feel like I have tea running through my veins!"

[Beatrice's eyes widen slightly in alarm. Surreptitiously, she begins to move the tea canisters out of Ava's reach]

[Title card, in small text with a picture of a stern-looking Beatrice: "Note that tea used in this way will add caffeine, so please be mindful of how much you're using. Decaffeinated tea can generally be substituted if necessary."]

Chapter Text

Episode: Brigadeiros - the dessert that brings family together

[Title card, jaunty text: "Dead Mom Recipes" with a grinning skull wearing a chef's hat. After a moment, text is crossed out and written over in scribbly font: "Alive Cousins Recipes!"]

[Ava, standing behind the counter of a different kitchen, full of well-loved appliances and lively decorations. She waves excitedly]

"Hi everyone! We're here at my aunt's house in Portugal -"

[From the edge of the screen, a hand pops out and waves, accompanied by a warm accented "Hello"]

"- we weren't really planning on doing any videos but my cousins really wanted to teach me their favorite recipe, so we figured, why not film it?"

[A bright voice yells something unintelligible from off-screen. Ava laughs and turns as the stool beside her starts to wobble. A young boy appears, climbing up the stool and plopping himself on top. He glares when Ava ruffles his hair]

Kid: "First cousins!"

Ava, blinking: "What?"

[Beatrice steps into the frame from the other side, carrying a younger girl]

Beatrice: "Yes, technically the term is first cousins once removed."

Ava, rolls her eyes, fond: "Whatever. Cousins."

[Freeze frame: Roughly drawn circles appear around both kids, along with a scattering of hand drawn stars. "Meet Tomás and Joana! Tomás: 6 years old (almost 7!), loves seafood and Legos. Joana: 3 years old, loves being a koala (especially with Bea)"]

[Ava takes up a large wooden spoon to use as a microphone]

Ava: "Okay, what are we making today?"

Tomás: "Brigadeiros! They're our most favorite treat!"

[In Beatrice's arms, Joana nods eagerly, bouncing and repeating "favorite!" as Beatrice chuckles]

Tomás, idly as he puts on an apron: "They're so easy, even you can do it, Ava."

[There's a laugh from off-screen as Ava chokes. Title card with fire animation: "Burned by an almost-7-year-old"]

*

[Montage of the four of them greasing a large plate, Ava and Tomás dumping the ingredients into a pot as Beatrice quietly asks Joana the names of each one in Portuguese, then Tomás yelling out a mad scientist "Fire!" as he lights the stove with Ava]

Beatrice, still holding Joana, who has become fascinated with her necklace: "Did you know that brigadeiros are originally from Brazil? They were used to promote the presidential campaign of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes."

Ava, stirring the contents of the pot: "Wait, they're named after some guy who tried to run for president?"

[Beatrice smiles, her attention on Joana but continues telling Ava the history of the brigadeiro and Gomes' campaign. As Beatrice talks, Ava's movements become slower and slower as she listens]

Tomás, tugging on Ava's sleeve: "Ava, you have to keep stirring!"

[Ava startles and glares, but Tomás only glares back. She rolls her eyes and lets out a heavy sigh but returns to stirring in earnest]

Tomás, still focused intently on the pot: "Beatrice sounds like a teacher."

Ava, chuckling: "She kind of was."

Beatrice, carefully untangling Joana's fingers from her necklace: "I was a tutor."

Ava, glancing at Beatrice with a smirk: "She was my personal tutor, that's how we met."

[They share a look. Tomás, however, frowns in irritation and tugs on Ava's sleeve again, pointing at the pot]

Tomás, glaring at Ava: "Could you teach Ava to pay attention to what she's doing?"

[There's a soft scolding from off-screen. Title card with fire animation: "Burn count: 2"]

*

[ Ava and Tomás scrape out the mixture onto a plate, Joana sitting on the counter watching as Beatrice holds the pot steady. Tomás grabs a spoon and makes to dig in but Ava stops him]

Ava: "Hold your horses, buddy, we gotta let them cool."

Tomás, pouting: "But mama lets us eat it like this!"

[Ava glances from Tomás to Joana, both children aiming wide, pleading eyes at her. A strangled sound escapes from Ava as she looks to Beatrice for help. Beatrice picks up Joana from the counter, stepping in with that calming way of hers]

Beatrice: "How about we all go to the park while we wait?"

[A cheer goes up from the three cousins. Montage of them cleaning up while singing a familiar clean up song, then driving over to an open space with a playground where they all play together: Ava and Tomás chasing each other through the field, Beatrice holding Joana while racing Tomás down twin slides - then trying to run up them, Beatrice and Ava swinging Tomás and Joana on the swings with the both of them squealing as they go higher and higher, Beatrice helping Joana across a set of monkey bars, then Beatrice pulling herself up so that she's hanging upside down by her legs - Tomás lets out a groan when Ava and Beatrice share a giggly kiss]

[The montage continues to the four of them ordering snacks from a bakery, then Ava and Tomás fighting over the last chorizo bread; the four of them happening upon an arcade where they play nearly every offering there: a racing game where Ava crashes in dramatic flames; a fighting game where Ava picks up Tomás so he can face off against Beatrice, Joana on her shoulders; a UFO catcher where Beatrice is intensely focused, with Ava, Tomás, and Joana cheering when she successfully wins a stuffed duck]

[Cut to the backseat of a car, Ava seated in the middle of Tomás and Joana, all three of them asleep with their winnings scattered around them: small plastic toys on Tomás' lap, a pirate hat on Joana's head, and the stuffed duck cradled loosely in Ava's arms]

[A faint chuckle from behind the screen. Then from the driver's side, a teasing tone: "So when are you and Ava getting your own?" There's a choked sound as the video jerks around suddenly as if fumbled]

*

[Back in the kitchen, Beatrice is behind the counter with Joana curled up in her arms. Beatrice speaks, splitting her attention between the camera and Joana]

"Ava and Tomás are still asleep so Joana and I are going to prepare things for when they wake up."

[Beatrice and Joana pick out some toppings, both of them speaking quietly with each other in Portuguese]

Beatrice: "Which one is your favorite?"

Joana, points: "Baby M&Ms."

Beatrice, smiling: "Those are my favorite too."

[Joana's grin turns into giggles when Beatrice takes several mini M&Ms and starts to juggle them one-handed, ending with catching two of them in her mouth. She offers Joana the last ones, which the little girl takes eagerly]

[Beatrice's gaze shifts off-screen for a moment - does a double-take. Frowns and switches back to English]

"Why are you taking a video on your phone? We're already filming."

[Ava makes her way on-screen, pocketing her phone and smiling fondly]

"This is just for me."

[She gives Beatrice a kiss on her cheek. Beatrice rolls her eyes but the softness in her eyes matches the fondness in Ava's gaze. On the other side of Beatrice, Joana gives her a kiss on her other cheek. Ava lets out a dramatic gasp]

"Beatrice is my girlfriend! But if you wanted kisses …"

[Joana squeals as Ava takes her into her arms, blowing raspberries into her tummy. Amidst the noise, a ruffled and squinting Tomás appears - hair first, sticking up all on the side - having climbed up the stool. His slightly cranky expression brightens when he sees the toppings. Beatrice smiles down at him, already passing him a bag of cookies and a rolling pin]

"Want to help crush these?"

[Montage of the four of them doing the final preparations: Tomás letting out a mad scientist cackle as he smashes bags of cookies, pretzels, and nuts for the toppings, then taking the plate of the mixture out of the refrigerator and all four of them rolling out the brigadeiros with their hands. They all try out different toppings and combinations, Beatrice helping Joana with her toppings while Tomás makes an army of "brigadeiro snowmen"]

[Meanwhile, Ava has a mischievous grin on her face as she rolls out a large brigadeiro and tries to put every topping on it. From off-screen, a sound that's a mix of a laugh and a groan is heard. Ava blinks, looks off-screen]

"What?"

[The sound softens into a sigh. "That's what your mother used to do when we were kids"]

[Ava freezes. From beside her, Beatrice eyes her carefully, and even the children quiet down to watch her. After a moment, Ava bites her lip, eyes shining as she aims a wobbly smile off-screen]

"Guess she had good taste, huh."

[A hand reaches out across the counter and Ava takes it, holds it tightly. Her eyes shimmer as she grins, wide and fierce and alive]

[Beatrice wraps an arm around her, presses a kiss to her temple. Tomás and Joana lean into her as well, their small arms wrapping around her as much as they can in a messy group hug. Ava laughs, surrounded by her family]

"Thanks guys. I love you all so much."

[A chorus of "We love you too" as the video fades. End shot is two stills: the first is the four of them grinning for the camera, holding a plate of decorated brigadeiros; the second is an aged picture of a young Elena and her sister, Ava's aunt, also with a plate of brigadeiros, grinning just as wide]
