Chapter 1: Closing

Chapter Text

Winston used to work the day shift at Burger King. It was a boring job, but Winson loved his cat Pickles and needed to keep working so she could be happy and healthy. He always worked the day shift, since Pickles was nocturnal and having the night off meant he could spend more time with her. It was a normal Tuesday shift until Winston got called into his manager’s office.

“Good afternoon Winston! I’m sorry to call you in during your break but Brooke called in sick. I was wondering if you’d be okay with filling in and working the closing shift.” His manager asked.

“Umm, sure.” Winston justified his quick decision since he had the morning off and didn’t get in until 2.

“Fantastic! Thank you so much, feel free to take a half an hour break then tonight.” He smiled as he ushered Winston out of his office.

Winston lazily scrubbed dishes in the sink as time slowly ticked by. Two other coworkers were up front moping and closing the registers. The dish water was cold as Winston rinsed the final dish.

“Hey, Winston. Everything’s done so me and Marc are heading out. The keys to close are on the counter here, good night.” One of them shouted back into the kitchen.

“I’m gonna use the bathroom real quick. I’ll set them back on the counter if you’re still here.” Marc responded. Winston shouted good night back at them and finished rinsing his final dish. When he was done, he drained the sink, wiped down the counters, grabbed his jacket and headed out into the chilly night. He unlocked his car then suddenly remembered that he forgot to lock the Burger King! He rushed back into the dark restaurant only to discover the keys were gone! He anxiously searched the restaurant, checking the kitchen counters he just cleaned, the managers office and even the bathrooms. Just as he gave up on his search, he found the keys sitting on the counter, right where his co-worker had left them. He let out a sigh of relief, locked the doors and started going back to his car. Suddenly he saw a group of people gathered at the front of the store. Some held cones, while others wheeled out old tires. Curiosity got the best of Winston and he walked over to a friendly looking person in a chicken costume.

Winston’s first thought was ‘mascot,’ but he’d never seen a mascot at this location, especially at night.

“Umm, excuse me, but we’re closed for the night.” The chicken didn’t respond and just pointed him towards another person in motorcycle riding gear. Winston hesitantly walked over and repeated his statement.

“Oh! We got permission from the owner of the property to use this lot after hours.” They responded happily.

“Oh, what exactly are you guys doing with our parking lot?”

“Motorcycle racing, do you want in?”

“Yes.” Winston said suddenly. “Wait, but I don’t have a bike…”

“Don’t worry newbie, I’ve got an extra.”

“For real? Are you sure?”

“Give it a shot, newbie.”

“Wow, thanks man.”
