The Man You Love

Summary:

Your relationship with Jack wasn't completely public, but that didn't mean he didn't love you-

Notes:

Request from tumblr! Just some fluff with Jack

Work Text:

You'd been dating Jack for a while, not that any tabloid out there knew that. As far as any gossip column was printing, Jack was single, and more than ready to mingle. Only a select few people from the NSA knew the actual truth.

What was the actual truth?

Jack was smitten, completely taken, with you. He loved just how domestic coming home to you everyday felt. Having someone in his corner was something he didn't realize he was missing.

Was Jack a good partner?

Surprisingly, he was. He was attentive, and listened, and treated you with the utmost care and respect. The flirtatious persona fell off at the door, or the window, depending on if he'd decided to come home like a normal person, or fly home and come in through the fire escape.

You were pulled from your quiet musings, by the smell of food. Jack must have cooked while you were zoning out, thinking of him, instead of paying attention to the show you'd put on. He must have noticed you not paying attention, because he had this little smile on his face, mischief shining in his eyes, “what were you thinking about?” He asked head tilted out of curiosity as he handed you your plate.

You shook your head, “nothing important,” as you picked up your fork, and dug in. It was good, really good. It always surprised you when Jack cooked, the pair of you usually ordered in, since both of your jobs were so demanding.

He narrowed his eyes slightly, as though trying to read your thoughts, you were insanely thankful that wasn't one of his abilities, “sure seemed important, sweetcheeks, you were awful focused-” he was persistent, you would give him that.

“I'd only inflate your ego more if I told you,” you replied around a bite of your meal.

His eyebrows shot up, “so you *were* thinking about me-” he sounded so smug, “I knew it. What about me had you so distracted?”

“Just thinking about how much I love you-” you shrugged, blush coloring your cheeks.

He immediately softened, no longer teasing you, his shoulder brushed yours as he leaned over to press a kiss to your temple, “I love you too,” he murmured.

When he pulled back he didn't go far, just setting both of your empty plates on the coffee table, so he could pull you into his arms. You nestled as close to him as you could manage, eyes on the TV but still not paying a bit of attention to it. Jack was much the same, though his eyes were still on you.

You were both having similar thoughts about the other. You were thinking about just how lucky you were to get to see him relaxed, and at peace. He was thinking about how lucky he was that you tolerated all of his superhero antics, and you put up with the rumors about him. He was as honest as possible, telling people someone had caught his eye, and he loved them very much, that really seemed to make the rumors worse though, and he couldn't help but feel guilty about it. You never seemed to mind though, loving him all the same.

He was pulled from his musings by you pressing a gentle kiss to his collarbone, one of the few places you could reach from your place on his chest. He couldn't help but smile, forgetting the worries he was so focused on, to just simply exist with you for the night, knowing that tomorrow would be another long day of being someone else's hero (he was still your hero even then).
