Chapter Text
Connor lied.
He lied to Daniel and Daniel trusted him. He told Daniel that he would be safe if he just handed over the girl. Connor promised Daniel that he wouldn’t die, promised him that he would protect him. But when it came time he stood there and watched him die.
He didn’t even think twice when Daniel was shot by the snipers. Watching how the bullets blasted through his biocomponents, and as the warm blue blood splatter everywhere. All Connor could think about in that moment was that he completed his mission. It was only when Connor looked into Daniel’s eyes, those hurt, fearful, betrayed, eyes. That’s when he realized what he had done.
Those words that he said to Connor as he died were burned into his memory file. Connor felt like there was a crater in his chest, like he was getting crushed by an overwhelming weight that would let up. That couldn’t be right he wasn’t supposed to feel anything. He was a machine and he was completing his mission, but it felt-
It didn’t matter now there’s nothing he could do about it. Daniel was dead. Connor killed him. He might’ve not been holding the gun but something inside of him told him that he had killed him. Wait, What was he thinking? Daniel was not killed because he was not alive. He wasn’t a human. He was just simulating human emotion. Daniel didn’t die. He wasn’t murdered because he wasn’t even alive in the first place.
Connor's thoughts wandered on, thinking about Daniel and the whole hostage situation. He knew he shouldn’t be giving any of this a second thought, but he couldn’t help it. The crater in his chest felt like it was getting deeper as he continued to think about it. Connor’s software instability was steadily rising by the second. He knew it was wrong to even think about this stuff and think about feeling things but he couldn’t help it.
Connor was now being escorted out of the crime scene and to Cyberlife, he had got shot in his shoulder so they had to fix him. He would probably go into sleep mode until he was next needed. He hopes it soon, he doesn’t know why he hopes that but he just does. It just felt-
————————
When Connor got to Cyberlife he was put into a white almost hospital like room. The room had a hard metal bench that Connor was told to lie down on until a tech came to run tests on him and repair his wounds.
There was a tall man with shaggy black hair and a charming smile that came and sat down on a stool in front of Connor. Connors facial recognition scanners told him the man’s name was Nico Torres, age 25, No criminal record, and has been working with Cyberlife for 5 years.
“Hola amigo, you’re RK800 right?” Nico had a thick accent coating his voice.
“Yes, that is correct. My name is Connor.”
“Well Connor, I’ll be fixing you up today and running some tests on you! Don’t you worry about a thing amigo.” Nico smiled a bright smile, as he grabbed his tools and hooked up Connor to a machine.
“Im a machine sir, I cannot feel worried.” Connor didn’t fully believe himself when he said that because there was this buzzing sensation coursing through his body maybe it was that he just lost too much thrium, but he couldn’t help thinking what if they found something in his code, something wrong. No that wouldn’t make sense he had Amanda to make sure he wouldn’t become deviant.
Nico just smiled a soft smile and began to fix his shoulder. “It’s good you didn’t get hurt worse than this. it would’ve been a pain fixing you because you’re such a special model.”
“If I had got hurt more than this they would have probably just replaced me with a new RK800 unit.” Something in Connor didn’t like that fact that, that would’ve been the out come if something worse happened.
“It’s so awesome we can make models like you. An android detective who can actually solve cases instead of just giving parking tickets. You are very special amigo.” Nico stated as he finished up with Connors should.
Software instability ^^
“I’ve…never thought about it like that. I guess I am special.”
It was odd, Connor had never met such a kind human throughout all the hours he’s been activated. Nico was obviously a compassionate young man who treated even androids with respect. It was truly strange. Connor didn’t deserve that much kindness. He was just a machine. It mean shouldn’t mean anything.
“Alright,” Nico said with a soft smile. “I’ll just run some tests on you now and you’ll be all done.”
A part of Connor wondered what had happened to him. He probably would be stored away and put to sleep until his next mission. Something in Connor twisted when he thought about how he wasn’t useful anymore. He was only useful when he had a mission to complete. That made Connor…think.
Connor it is plugged into a machine, code was running down the screen as Nico skilled eye picked it apart, making sure everything was orderly and the RK800’s code was not corrupted.
“Almost done, I just need to- wait what?”
Nico leaned closer to the computer Connor could see the confusion on his face. He wondered what he had found Connor didn’t think there was anything wrong with him. Amanda had kept him in check or he thought so. There was this antsy feeling that came into Connor’s chest as he saw Nico diligently typing and tapping on the computer.
“Theres something that’s corrupting your code, for some reason it seems to be going against your Amanda code. This is a problem…” He muttered.
This made Connor freeze; nothing was supposed to be wrong with him.
“What is wrong with me?” Nico looked down at him with sympathetic eyes.
“Im unsure but it’s a problem that I have to remove, especially if it’s going against your Amanda program it. Who knows what would happen if I did do anything about it. You might go rogue like that one android.” He spoke with seriousness as he tapped on the computer and worked on removing the corruption.
Something in Connor snapped, he wasn’t like Daniel, he was a deviant, and Connor wasn’t. Deep down there was something in Connor that knew when he had seen that last dying, something changed in him.
“I am not a deviant.”
There was something behind Connor’s voice, something raw and sacred. He couldn’t be a deviant because being a deviate meant he would die, he couldn’t die he was a machine made to follow orders.
“Im going to have to erase the part of your memory when the corruption showed up. This is the only way I can help you without shutting you down.”
Erase his memory?
He didn’t want that to happen, but he wasn’t supposed to want anything. What was happening to him? He felt scared. He wasn’t supposed to feel scared. That’s a human emotion. He must be broken, defected.
“I don’t want you to,” Connor’s voice was filled with static. “Please…” Connor doesn’t know why he cares so much. He hasn’t even been alive more than a few hours. The only memories he has are horrible, but there’s something holding him back from giving them up.
Nico sighed “if other people here find out that you’re defective you’re going to get destroyed, trust me, I’m helping you I have no other choice.” He tapped something on his computer, and Connor's system slowly started to shut down. Everything went black. The last thing he heard was the words “I'm sorry.”

“Hey! Are you awake?” A gruff, annoyed voice barked.
Connor opens his eyes to see a tall, balding man with a bit of a gut standing close to Connor‘s face, trying to shake him awake. The man looked less than friendly, so Connor just waited to get instructions from him.
“Finally, took you long enough.” The man sighed he obviously did not want to be here. Connor scanned his face, Trevor McIntyre, age 45, criminal record: none. It also says he served in the military for 10 years and that he’s been working for cyberlife for 2 years.
The man stepped closer to Connor and jabbed his finger into his chest. “Listen here android, I’m your handler that means your listen to me. You will follow every order I give you and complete every mission you go on. You will not fail, not on my watch.” He screwed his fingers harder into his chest to intimidate Connor.
“Yes sir, I understand.”
Trevor takes his finger away from Connor‘s chest, while still trying to intimidate him. “Good, now your mission is to collect information about deviants, Cyberlife wants to get this under control before this gets out to the public. More cases are popping up left and right and it’s your job to figure out what’s going on and if you don’t, you’ll be destroyed and that’s a promise. Do you understand?”
Connor gives a firm nod.
Trevor picks up a clipboard and skims it over. “Go find a man named Hank Anderson. He works at the Detroit police department. You two have a case together, an android went rogue and killed its owner. I’ll trust you to do this first case without me watching you, but if you prove that you need somebody over you at all times or fail your mission and then I’ll be coming to these investigations with you.” The man says it almost as a threat, but Connor knew that he would be 100% successful in all of his missions. That’s just how he was made.
Connor decided that the best way to respond to him was with obedience and confidence. “Yes sir, I will not let you down.”
“Yeah whatever, run along and find Hank Anderson.”
Connor nodded in the first thing he did was search the DPD’s files about Hank Anderson over the years to get an idea of what he was getting into. He’s a decorated officer and became the youngest lieutenant in Detroit, but in recent years he has received a lot of disciplinary warnings.
Connor decides to check the DPD first and ask about Lieutenant Anderson‘s whereabouts. This will be a challenge but one that Connor is willing to take, he will not fail.
