Work Text:
Shadowheart’s first greeting was the scent of lavender and clean house teasing her nose as she returned to the cottage after a long day in the city. The second greeting was the sound of music blaring from her bedroom upstairs, and Violet loudly singing along. Shadowheart smiled and crept slowly up the steps, resting against the doorframe to observe her love, on hands and knees scrubbing the tub.
“What’s a mighty magic wielder like yourself doing toiling away at household chores by hand?”
Violet startled at the sound of her partner’s voice, her song cut off mid-verse.
“Oh, don’t stop now,” Shadowheart teased with a playful smirk, “You were just getting to my favorite part.”
Violet rinsed her hands and abandoned the sponge, but resumed singing along.
“And all the night orchids in all the world would never measure up – no, not to the beauty of my girl, my girl, my girl,” Violet belted, more playfully than skillfully, “all the night orchids in all the world…”
Shadowheart fell into her half-drow’s strong arms, her fingers teasing at the mess of soft white hair. Violet greeted her with a reverent kiss, humming into her lips as their bodies melted into each other adoringly.
“How was the city? How’s Nocturne?” Violet inquired, releasing Shadowheart from their embrace and turning back to the matter at hand.
“I mean it, love,” Shadowheart cut in, “A simple prestidigitation spell could have all of this sorted in a moment.”
“Yes, but I know how much you love the way it makes the house smell when I clean it by hand,” Violet retorted with soft, loving eyes.
“You’re really laboring away manually, just to make it smell nice in here for me?” Shadowheart was moved by the consideration. Being with Violet had always been about grand and sometimes dangerous acts of love on one another’s behalf, but here they were – safe and settled, at peace, and Shadowheart utterly taken with the smallest and sweetest of gestures.
“Anything for you, my love,” Violet affirmed, busying herself with her scrubbing once again.
“I’ll admit, I do love the way it smells in here,” Shadowheart conceded with a deep inhale. “But what if I said I had more pressing duties to assign your talented hands?”
Violet’s attention was caught again without delay, a prestidigitation spell uttered and cast before she could even close the gap between them.
“Good girl,” Shadowheart cooed, pulling her love along by the hand and leading her to the bed. Shadowheart laid her head on Violet’s chest, then guided the woman’s hands to the place she willed it. “Is this what you envisioned when I told you I had a better job for them?”
As Violet stroked Shadowheart’s silver hair tenderly, massaging her scalp and removing her pleat, she sighed contentedly and drew a deep breath before giving her answer.
“Yes, my love. This is precisely what I envisioned.”
