Work Text:
Ralph laid the conch down, setting it on the log he claimed "the cheif's seat".
Long after the assembly had finished, the sun had fallen. It had ended on a fit of laughter caused by silliness the littleuns were up to. Even if they hadn't accomplished much, Ralph had a nice time laughing with the other boys.
The cool salty breeze gently hit Ralph's face, giving him a sense of relief. Today was one of the better days for him. Although it was only him and Simon working on shelters, they managed to get one standing. The weather had also been on his favor that day. It was hot, as it always is, yet it was far more tolerable than most.
Suddenly, Ralph hears a twig snap from behind him.
"Ouh- Did I scare you?"
Ralph stares at Jack, a little startled by his abrupt entrance. He admits, "No.. just a bit." Jack snickers.
Ralph sits on the sandy ground facing the beach, Jack plops himself next to him. Ralph stares out into ocean.
"Where have you been? I haven't seen you since the assembly."
"I wanted to have another go at hunting, you never know when it might happen."
Ralph faces Jack and stifles a laugh. "How's that going?"
Jack elbows Ralph playfully, yet roughly. "Hey, I'll get one soon!" He plays with the sand in front of him, tracing lines and patterns. "I'll get one soon. I just need more men."
"They're only boys."
Jack kicks the sand, destroying his abstract doodle. He has already been fed up with Ralph, his words ruining the mood.
"You hunt too much. I've started to miss you y'know."
He turns back to look at Ralph, sort of baffled by him. Jack again turns his head away from Ralph, but still keeps his eyes on him. "Don't you have Piggy? or Simon?"
"Piggy's not the type to swim or play, and Simon is always wandering around. They're both not as fun."
Jack stays silent.
"You should help build shelters, whenever you can."
"We'll see.. maybe."
