Regarding Replacing Rimuru Tempest Through Transmigration

Summary:

Considering I read the Tensura Webnovel years ago, then not really interacting with it further, I certainly didn't expect the Voice of the World to greet me when I came to death's door. A blessing is a blessing, however, and if I want the best chance to make it out, hopefully with less pain than Rimuru went through, I'll have to be a little selfish.

Canon Rewrite through SI, tropey, yeah, but hopefully still good, like the fast food of fanfic.

Notes:

Quick note: I'll be releasing this in arcs to hopefully staunch any awful cliffhangers I leave you on by disappearing for a year.
Arc 1 is Volume 1 to 2.

Also, I may have taken inspiration from several other fics, but then can't remember who/what, so if you recognise something, leave a comment pointing to where you first saw it, and if it's the right one, I can give proper credit.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Misc. Utils

Summary:

Slight spoilers, feel free to come back after reading the first arc. Not required for reading the story, but it may contain explanations on how/why that's so different to canon.

Tl;dr: Miscellaneous, notes, and good-to-knows, with a few tangents mixed in.

Feel free to leave comments with your thoughts, I'd love more discussion on these :D

Chapter Text

All canon characters are canon-named; non-canon characters are given different names. Any skipped scenes that cover canon content may be presumed to go the same way as canon, or with otherwise extrapolatable changes. This may make the story seem... a little rushed, but up to the Orc Disaster is a slightly boring arc for me, so... *shrug*

The point of this story was to see how canon would go if 'I' (or at least an artist's rendition of me) was inserted, with solely the knowledge of the WN and a few tiny pieces of content from the other stuff. I'll... try not to Gary Sue myself, which that should help. OC's will hopefully not overshadow the main story's main side characters, other than where it makes sense to. I really do like ants, though; they're to me like beetles to Rimuru. Why am I even justifying this? It's my story.

This is a Lightnovel rewrite, may add in the side story scenes as interludes... eventually. I'm reading the LN's (up to the 21st that I was able to get) right now, hence the lack of knowledge on said side stories.

As of right now, my plan for romance is on the down low, hence Gen category, and smut is extremely unlikely, hence fadeout in 1.5.

Side note, I make stat sheets a lot. They're fun to do. I'll insert them only when enough has changed, or it makes sense for Rimuru to ask for them, though, so hopefully it won't be half the story. Maybe tl;dr a barebones and dropdown the full ones. There's like, three in the first arc because we go through rapid empowerment during it. (It's literally called Empowerment in both WN and LN iirc)

My understanding of skills:

All skills require the one acquiring them to have the Soul to support it and the magicules and soul force to power it. Weak entities like goblins may have a few Common skills, exceptions acquiring Extra, while Oni have several Extra skills, exceptions acquiring Unique.

  • Common skill: a very small ranged skill, usually covering only one function, able to be acquired through pure training
    • i.e. Water Blade, Water Jet, Water Current Motion
  • Extra skill: Wide-ranging skill with more control, efficiency, and power behind it, covering broader functions, but still under one umbrella, able to be acquired through training
    • i.e. Water Control covering its three composite skills, while also offering functions not part of them, but closely related
  • Unique Skill: A cumulative skill that holds subskills that describe its main functions, and requires a certain amount of Will or Desire to coalesce
    • I.e. Shizue acquiring Degenearte purely through her Desire not to merge with Ifrit.
  • Ultimate skill: Going even beyond Unique skills, it requires an extremely strong Will or Desire to acquire it, a robust soul to hold and operate it, and offers powers that go far beyond, able to bend and manipulate even the laws of the world.

When a skill upgrades, it can hold functions that were not part of its composites, but are closely related.

Arts are non-skill manipulations of the world, used through the user's knowledge, training, and mastery. Arts can either be the direct manipulation of energy, be it magicules, aura, or spirit, or higher master manipulation of skills, be it one or multiple, i.e. Velzard's White World, Geld's Ravenous' Corrosion snake things, or Ranga's Destruction Storm (It's an art made through manipulating air pressure to make winds and boost lightning).

Ultimate skills: Envy, Greed, Gluttony

Jealous. Or, well, Leviathan. The novels give it, like, one skill, and that's to deprive power from others.

That's... boring, and way too weak for an Ultimate. The way I imagine it may place it a little too close to Greed/Mammon, but I don't care. Gluttony, Envy, and Greed are very similar in functionality, if not definition.

  • Envy: an emotion which occurs when a person lacks another's quality, skill, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it. (Wikipedia)
    • This limits the scope, as it by definition is through comparison with another thing or person. To make it more powerful, at least comparable to Greed, allowing it to work on anything within observation distance definitely works.
  • Greed: an insatiable desire for material gain (be it food, money, land, or animate/inanimate possessions) or social value, such as status or power. (Wikipedia)
    • Less limited than Envy, it's theft and hoarding of anything the user desires. Frankly, it's very powerful in Tensura, and it stays true to its definition, which is just, broad. The limitation of reach definitely helps it stay a bit more balanced.
    • To be even more so, the theft could definitely scale with the user's desire for the thing, slating it against the owner's desire to keep it or the worth of the thing. I.e. if the user is like, 'oh, hey, I want that,' to something weak like a Common skill, it works, while if it's that same level of want vs a Unique that is dear to its owner, it fails.
  • Gluttony: over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste.
    • Tensura's representation is fine, imo. It plays in the over-consumption aspect well enough, though goes into Greed's hoarding with Stomach, which is kinda the opposite of its definition of 'to the point of waste', which, *shrug*

I'd love to redo them for my story, but I'm not that good of a rewriter, so I'll leave it to someone else.

Anyway! The skill in question's properties for my story, esp since it won't conflict much with the very short time we saw the og:

Leviathan, Lord of Envy:

  • Steal: Forcefully acquire others' things, such as energy, skills, emotions, and material possessions, leaving nothing behind.
    • "You don't deserve that! It should be mine instead."
    • I.e. It can forcefully take ownership of things, such as skills up to Unique and equipment up to Mythic, rewriting the owner in everyone's minds in the process, if needed, barring any protection to such.
  • Copy: Gracefully acquire others' witnessed arts, skills, and possessions (material creation), not touching the originals.
    • "I wish I could do/have that, too..."
    • Replicates skills and witnessed arts, and, if the target is a material object, replicates it using Material Creation.
      • Copies are incomplete for Unique skills and above, and Mythic-grade equipment and above.
  • Block: Lacking the ability to acquire others' things, block their access to it (Material and Immaterial)
    • "If I can't do/use it, then neither can you!"
    • Blocks the target of envy, be it the use of an object it can’t replicate, like Mythic-grade equipment and above, or, with immense cost, Ultimate Skills.
  • Thought Deceleration: Steal target's Thought Acceleration and add it to own, or if there is none, decelerate their processing by 1 million times.

And, if I were to redo the other two:

Mammon, Lord of Greed

  • Hoard: A subspace inaccessible to anyone but the owner where their belongings can be stored.
  • Ownership: Anything the user has deemed as theirs, be it by stealing it or by claiming an unclaimed, is acknowledged as such by anyone who lays eyes on it, and protected from attempts to act on it by way of a powerful barrier.
    • I.e. the user has claimed a random pretty rock, and left it where others can see it and appreciate it. Any who lay eyes on it immediately know who the owner is, and attempts to take it away or degrade it are blocked by a barrier.
    • Also applies to less material things, such as protecting their health from degradation due to an attack from someone.
  • Steal: Forcefully acquire anything desired, pitting it against the owner’s will to keep it.
    • Worth and size of the thing increase the cost to steal; desire to steal winning vs the will to keep discounts it.
  • Desire: Play with others’ desires, mostly in the realm of their possessions.
    • I.e. degrade another person’s will to keep something, or increase the worth of something else above the desired item’s worth, facilitating a trade, barring any resistance to such influences.

Beelzebuth, Lord of Gluttony

  • Stomach: A subspace where consumed and acquired things are stored, of limited size. Once full, anything else consumed is either immediately broken down into magicules or completely lost. Size depends on the user, but is usually large enough that it doesn’t ever fill.
  • Replication: Things consumed are able to be replicated so as to be enjoyed or indulged in once again.
    • Skills can be replicated so that their effect can be enjoyed again, meals can be remade so as to be enjoyed again, etc.
  • Consumption: The ability to consume anything and everything, though it gets harder the less material and understood the thing is.
    • I.e. easily eats material things, but has more trouble consuming magic/spiriton-based attacks and souls, and even more with emotions or thoughts.
  • Share: Share the enjoyment and indulgence generated by something by sharing the thing itself
    • I.e. handing a skill to a subordinate or an attack back to its owner.
