Notes:

Hiiii :D this is an idea that just came up to my mind a few days ago and i'm really into Deltarune right now sooo what a better way to love a media than making a fanfic about it?

Sorry for the english you're about to read, i'm not a native english speaker and this is my second fanfic in english so please if you see any error, don't be so rude ;w; i'm learning in the process.

Also, this is an alternative universe, so it means there are not dark fountains, darkners, lightners nor red soul controlling a depressive teenager, so don't worry, there are not (much) angst in this story.

Also I suck in the comedy so yeah sorry again for making this haha you're allowed to making fun of me if this is to cringe.

I hope this fanfic don't take me a lot of time to get finished, i must warned that i updated really slow bcs of my personal life, sorry if i take to long, i really hope that doesn't happend and even with that, this fanfic is not going to be so long, is more short than it can look hehe.

Aaand yeah, thanks for reading all these nonsense and well, hope you liked it ;3

Let's begin!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Introduction — A tale of three heroes.

Chapter Text

A long time ago, in a land far away from what we know, two confronted races existed: humans and monsters.

Humans, true to their afraid nature for the unknown, inculcated fear between their people against the monsters through the idea that they were ruthless beings who would not hesitate for a moment to seize their souls in a search for determination, a power so great that it could even transcend death.

Driven by that fear, humans started a war athwart monsters so brutal that almost finished both races. Until three figures appeared to finish this conflict: The Kind King, The Poet of Justice and The Soldier with Perseverance. Two monsters and a human who brought peace to that land ruled by hate and intolerance with hopes and dreams.

When the war finally was over, the Three Heroes decided to separate their paths: The Poet of Justice went out to tell her stories to other lands keeping alive the Bravery for those who want to dare make their own stories; The Soldier with Perseverance stayed in a human small town to make a family and where their message was transcended with Patience to the next generations; and the Kind King ruled his Kingdom with Integrity until he couldn't do it more, so he inherited his position to those who followed him.

With the time, their story gradually became blurred in the monsters and humans minds until there was only left a memory of a mere legend with almost no witnesses left to confirm its truth. But not so their message, which remained as alive as the end of the war, especially within the kings and queens who followed the Kind King.

Here is where Asgore appeared. A young and reckless monster prince who found love in a noble maiden called Toriel. She helped him to find the Integrity to rule his people and accept his role as a protector of them.

Their love was big enough to produce a newborn crown prince for that land of monsters: Asriel, a child so gentle and a little mischievous who used to love spending time in the kingdom limits with his best friend Dess, a crown princess from another monster kingdom in the coldest zone at the north of that land.

They both were such big fanatics from The Legend of the Three Heroes that even dreamed about having epic adventures like them, satisfying that longing in their games among the tall grass where the fireflies always fluttered.

But every time Dess left, Asriel couldn't leave the castle anymore by order of his parents. Apparently, everyone was just too busy to accompany him. And no matter how much he begged, no one gave in to his pleas to leave. In the end, he always ended up bored and anxiously waiting for next visit from Dess.

Until one day, tired of boredom, he escaped the castle when no one was paying attention to him and managed to reach the limits of the kingdom by himself.

He was free, at least for one day and he couldn’t be happier to finally be able to play outside like he loved to do.

‘Maybe if i wait enough here, ¡Dess will be back sooner!’. He thought just like the child he was. So he decided to entertain himself for a while by playing, waiting for his friend.

But in the end, being alone wasn’t as enjoyable as being with company. After a while, he just sitted in the grass not knowing what else to do.

“Bleh, this is boring”. He complained at the time a bug jumped out of his plushy hands in an failed attempt to catch it up. His gaze shifted at the sunset sky.

‘Maybe it’s time to go back’. He thought when he noticed that it was starting to get dark and the fear of being all alone in there invaded him.

The moment he stood up, the sound of something hitting the ground caught his attention. When he looked down, a snail shell surprised him. He lifted it and noticed that it was empty.

‘Maybe snails must abandoned their houses here to get better ones!’. He remembered what Dess said once because it was very common to see empty shells in that place. So every time they found at least two, they threw them into the grass as a game to see who could throw their shell the furthest.

He didn’t think much about it. He took an impulse and then threw it as far as his childish strength allowed him. Feeling more satisfied, he turned ready to go back home just to stop his own steps instantly a complaint was heard.

He froze and only turned slowly and fearfully after a few seconds that felt like ages. The moment his eyes gazed at the grass, he catched a movement not so far away from his position.

‘Oh my Angel’. The terror invaded him at the same time an idea came to his mind.

“Dess?”. He called only to get a gasp in response that startled him.

The silence after that made him stir in his place nervously, not knowing what to do now.

‘What if they’re an intruder?’. He thought with fear invaded him again. He brought his hands to his mouth to avoid exclaiming too loudly because of his idea. If there were an actual intruder then he shouldn't alert them any further or they might do something to him.

“Only cowards run away”. Dess’ words came to his mind when he was about to do exactly that.

“I am not a coward!”. He exclaimed in response.

“Then let’s go for the ball”. She pointed to a tree where their ball got stuck, just in the highest branch. They were alone so none adult could help them. Without any other options, Asriel climbed the tree and managed to get the ball down with Dess’ help. It wasn’t as scary as he thought… at least until he fell down and broke an arm but those were details.

He took a deep breath and stamped one of his hooves decisively on the floor.

‘Alright Asriel, you’re not a coward! Go investigate now!’. He said mentally to himself before nodding.

He walked now to the origin of the sounds, more and more cautious at every step. His heart raced until he was almost there, just about regretting his actions because of the fear rising further through his body with an overwhelming coldness.

“He-Hello?”. But even with that fear, he spoke. A few inches from where the grass moved…

And from where, suddenly, a head appeared causing him to squeal and jump back.

In front of him was a little being with brown hair long enough to cover their eyes, their skin was slightly brown that looked strangely yellow due to the lighting of the sky, wearing a kind of pale yellow sweater and brown pants worn at the bottom and barefoot.

They… were a child… a human child.

They both were looking at each other. Asriel gave himself a little tug on his ear until he complained to confirm that in effect he wasn't dreaming. The human bowed their head curious of his action.

“Err, hi, what are you doing here?”. He asked but the human didn’t say anything, just watched him.

“Do you know how to speak?”. He asked again and the human didn’t say anything either, just to extend their hand into a fist.

“What?”. Asriel saw him confused. The human opened their fist and he exclaimed to see the shell he threw before.

“Oh that, i… sorry, i didn’t know there was someone else”. He apologized embarrassedly. The human closed their fist again and lowered their hand.

“Are your parents over here or…?”. It occurred to him to ask this time and the human denied. “Oh, are you lost?”.

The child denied again. Asriel frowned without understanding.

“Then, what are you doing here? Don't you have a home or something?”. The child lowered their gaze, seeming like they were thinking in their response before denied one more time with their head. Asriel was surprised.

“... Are you alone?”. The child nodded for the first time. Their stomach growling surprised both. Asriel saw with concern how the little human took their hand to their belly.

“Are you hungry?”. He asked softly and the human nodded again. “Well… my mom makes a really delicious pie… do you like pie?”. The child bowed their head again in confusion. “Have you never tasted a pie before?”. Asriel exclaimed, shocked this time the child denied. “That can’t be possible!, you can’t live without knowing what a pie is!”.

The child's stomach growled again. Asriel noticed how they frowned with anguish and annoyance, clearly more than hungry.

At that moment, an idea made him raise his eyebrows with excitement.

“Do you wanna come to my home?”. The child looked up to the little monster smiling in front of him. “My mom would make you a pie and Muffet would make you new clothes and you can sleep in your own bed!, wouldn’t you like that?”.

The child opened their mouth with surprise for the offer, no one before ever looked at them or showed compassion.

They never knew what amiability was when everyone rejected them.

What mercy was when everyone seemed to want to hurt them.

Their world was so dark and cold…

Until that little monster kid showed up. A monster who, in that moment, was smiling to them with an authenticity so pure that it really seemed so bright like the sun, so warm, so… kind.

They never felt that kind, that security. Something so real that make them knew that everything would be all right. No matter what.

They smile. Flooded by those feelings. They got carried away and didn’t hesitate to nod. Asriel smiled even more widely if possible and extended his hand.

“Come with me”. The child, a little nervous, extended their hand slowly. Both noticed the difference between their fingers: thin and fine versus robust and plush. Completely opposites. But at the end, child's hands. Finally reached once the human left their doubts behind with their pain and let themself to be free to accept the offer of a new life.

A bright life.

“You’re gonna love mom’s pie!”. Asriel exclaimed excitedly as they began to walk. “By the way, my name’s Asriel, do you have a name?”.

The human seemed to think about it before shaking their head.

“Hmmm, maybe i should give you one…”. Asriel looked around thoughtful until his eyes crossed the way with a Christmas decoration on a store sign and exclaimed: “Oh! I know! Kris! Like Chris-tmas! You like it?”.

Asriel looked back at the child who seemed to think about his words until they smiled softly and nodded.

“Great! Mom and dad will be amazed when they see you! They're gonna love you, i'm sure!”. He exclaimed again.

The now named Kris smiled again. That excitement was contagious. But it wasn't bad. At all.

Meanwhile, in the castle, everything became chaotic the moment Tenna, Asriel's personal guard, noticed the absence of the prince. Every guard mobilized immediately. Tenna tried to remain calm without success. It was hard when his (rayar esta palabra) the little prince just vanished and get lost under his own big and stupid nose and, worst of all, no one even noticed it either!

“Oh Angel! How's this possible?! The kings are gonna kill me!”. He exclaimed made a bundle of nerves.

“Relax Tenna, we're looking for him everywhere and the kings didn't realize yet that their son is lost”. Undyne said, the Royal Guard leader, more peaceful than Tenna can handle. “Besides, i don't think he went to far”.

“You don't get it, Undyne!”. Tenna exclaimed startling her. “It's supposed that i was taking care of him! But suddenly he disappeared! … And in front of me… Ahhh, this is the end”. His voice was gradually lower and lower until it was just a wail and he covered his face with his hands in despair.

“Ugh, you’re so f*cking dramatic y'know?”. Undyne rolled her eyes exasperated. “Look drama queen, Prince Asriel has come out thousands of times with that other north little girl. He knows the path better than their own hand, i'm sure he's fine”.

Tenna lowered his hands and looked up to her furious. He was fed up from the Undyne’s unconcern.

“How dare you-?!”.

“Ah sir Tenna, there you are”. He was about to explode in anger against Undyne when a femenine voice interrupted their conversation and froze Tenna in his place.

“Q-queen Toriel, your majesty, what a wonderful surprise!”. He exclaimed with a sudden change of humor, smiling very widely and tense.

“Your majesty”. Undyne bowed in exchange.

“Oh, sorry for interrupt your conversation”. She said embarrassed when she saw her.

“No! No! Your majesty never interrupts anything!”. Tenna said exaggeradetly and approached to her. “Tell me, my queen, what i can do for you?”.

Toriel smiled when he bowed, remaining her usual serenity.

“I came for my son. Our business are over and i want to spend time with him now”. She looked around the room. “Where is he?”.

Tenna felt his entire body more tense than a statue.

“Y-you mean the prince?”. He asked dissembling.

“Of course i mean the prince”. Toriel sounded a little confused. “He's normally around you like he drink ten cups of coffee”. She passed by him and searched behind one of the room's couches.

“Ah! Yes! Yes! Of course!”. Tenna laughed nervously. “The prince and i were… ummm… errr playing! Yeah! Playing hide and seek but i'm still no able to find him. He's really good hiding, your majesty”. As he talked, he made signs to Undyne for she to left and search for Asriel. The sea monster nodded and went to the door.

“Oh, i see. You were having fun”. Tenna came back to his rigid position as stone the moment the queen looked at him again.

“He, yeah, exactly! He's really a very energetic little boy-”.

“But not really good at hiding, i must say”. Toriel laughed softly while watched behind the curtains. “You shouldn't take too long to find him in this room, sir Tenna”.

Tenna felt how his body froze again and the cold sweat of nerves invaded his skin. Shoot, his lie was falling apart really quick.

“U-umm well this time he really did it good, ha, ha. B-but you're right your majesty. Prince Asriel is in…”. He looked around searching for a distraction when Undyne, who finally get to the door, open it to go out.

“¡Mom!” Just to reveal Asriel on the other side rising his arms with a smile in his face.

“THERE! YES! THANKS TO THE ANGEL!”. Tenna screamed with a relief that even hurts.

“Told you he was fine”. Undyne crossed her arms and smirked.

“Ah, my little star, there you are”. Toriel smiled and approached her child ignoring the crying from Tenna in the behind. She raised him up in her arms and kissed his face making him tickled. “Where you being hiding this whole time?”.

“Oh, i wasn't hiding. I went outside to play by myself for a moment”. In that moment, all the relief that Tenna felt vanished with a simple phrase.

“You… went… outside?”. Toriel never stopped to smiled but Tenna looked at her with the horror of knowing that she was really mad and not precisely to the young prince.

“Yeah! And look! I made a new friend!”.

“Oh, you mean an imagi-.” Toriel was suddenly cut off when Asriel pulled Kris by the hand, away from a jar they were looking at, revealing to the now frozen queen a human child holding hands with her baby who was staring at her with surprise in their open mouth.

Tenna and Undyne reactions wasn't different from the queen’s.

“Their name is Kris, actually i named them”. Asriel said with proud. “They don't have parents or house and they're really really hungry. Can they eat pie with us?”. Asriel smiled and Kris picked their nose, again distracted by the jar they was about to break before.

“W-what?”. Toriel finally speaked with a barely audible voice in the middle of her shock, just to hear how Kris break the jar.

“Can we keep them?” Asriel wiggled his tail with excitement.

That was how Kris came up in the life of the Dreemurr family.
