Alpha, Beta, Omega Dynamics
Important Note:
This is everything I can remember, and then some extras I thought of.
Omegas in my universe do not have separate genitalia. In mine, an Omega’s sex depends on their primary gender. So a female Omega has a vagina, a male Omega has a penis. They both produce slick, with Male Omega’s producing from their anus.
Core Structure:
- Alphas, Betas, and Omegas are normal in both Wizards and Muggles.
- Primes are rare, enigmas even rarer.
Glands:
- Typically located along the neck/shoulder junction(mating gland). Minor pleasure glands are located in the inner thighs and scent glands on the wrists.
- Glands pulse, swell, and darken during periods of heat, rut, fear, or arousal.
- Visual cues intensify when a bond is forming or threatened.
Bonding:
- Bonds form when both Alpha and Omega agree, although instincts can pressure them.
- Must bite the gland to actualize the bond.
- Once bonded:
- Scents loop between the Alpha and Omega.
- Both experience mutual calming effects.
- Distance is emotionally and physically taxing.
Omegas:
Heats:
- Every 3-5 months unless with pup.(dependent on the hormones of the omega in question)
- Omegas do not become mindless. They are still able to function and think. It’s just uncomfortable and/or painful unless they get ‘relief’ from a knot. Most of them still have young they need to tend to.
- Last 3-7 days unless interrupted
- Their biology and evolution have allowed for a heat to be ‘put off’, ensuring the survival of the species. This means that if they’re in a position where they fell ‘unsafe’ or ‘vulnerable’, they can temporarily stave off the heat.
- It comes back once they feel ‘safe’ but is prolonged because of the interruption.
- If put off too long, the heat gets worse and more painful.
- Recovery is relatively quick, a day or two after
- Stay functional during heats, but it’s painful and mentally exhausting without relief.
- Heats are biologically driven, centered around a need to breed but they are not just ‘submissive’.
- Special Note: Omegas that have suppressed or delayed their heats for too long experience excruciating pain and discomfort. The heats last longer and are much harder to recover from. They will not find relief unless knotted. And they may devolve into a traditional Omega state, utterly dependent on the Alpha.
Suppression and consequences:
- Wizards have developed suppression spells (how else would they contain a school filled with dynamics). Muggles used suppressants (end of the world means they’re hard to find).
- Long-term suppression leads to more severe, intense heats when it eventually fails.
- When the suppression stops, the scent and gland activation hits nearby Alphas hard, especially those with instinctual ties.
Scent Mechanics:
- Omegas release unique, pheromone-rich scents that affect others based on their emotional state.
- In heat, their scent becomes overwhelming, triggering Alpha responses.
- Under threat or while resisting dominance, the scent can turn sharp and repellent, which serves as a warning or a rejection.
- Bonded omegas have an addictive quality/scent to their mate, which is designed to reinforce their emotional and physical bond.
Alphas
- Alphas don’t have a regular schedule for ruts. Different environmental factors trigger them:
- Prologued stress or danger
- Scent of a compatible Omega in heat
- Territorial competition with another Alpha
- During a rut, an Alpha becomes:
- Highly aggressive
- Deeply possessive
- Overwhelmed by a need to claim and protect
- Alpha’s subtly scent-mark those they claim, often unconsciously (youching, lingering, hovering)
- Reactions to Omegas vary by temperament and compatibility. Some Omegas draw out protective instincts, and others provoke challenge or rejection.
Betas:
- Serve as the neutral population majority.
- Are not influenced by heats or ruts biologically, but are still emotionally affected.
- Often serve as pack mediators, caregivers, or laborers.
- Some Betas act as a balance point between volatile Alpha-Omega interactions.
Prime Alpha:
- The rarest and most dominant Alpha type.
- Their presence alters group dynamics instinctively. Meaning other Alphas feel threatened, uneasy, or deferential without understanding why.
- Unlike regular Alphas, they don’t need to assert power, as dominance is a passive state that dynamics recognize.
- Regular Alphas instinctively feel inferior, which can lead to fighting.
- Tend to bond to abnormally strong (emotionally or physically) Omegas. Not necessarily Enigmas.
Enigma Omega:
- They are Biologically Omegas, but their instincts and scent patterns defy norms.
- They are unresponsive to most Alphas, making them an evolutionary outlier.
- Their scent only reacts to specific Alphas, if it does at all.
- Extremely independent, resisting traditional Omega roles.
- Instincts lean toward protection and aggression, especially around their children.
Bonding Types:
- Bonds can ‘fade’ with time, usually takes years, if they are not around their bonded to reinforce it.
- There are two types of bonds:
- A person can hide their true self from the other until after bonding (Ed and Carol). This leads to one party being trapped in the relationship until enough time apart is spent for the bond to fray and eventually break.
- Breaking a bond can be done mutually, which requirers another bite, where an Alphas venom (not Venemous) pushes the intent into the original spot. IS EXTREMELY PAINFUL.
- Intent bonds: Formed between two compatible people. They form the basics of a true bond, which leads to enhanced closeness, possibility to ‘feel’ the other, and a sense of attunement to the other.
- Mated Bonds: Forged from a bite, but cannot be forced. An omega must be willing and receptive to the Alpha. So ‘rape’ cannot result in a permanent bond. However, they are difficult to escape from once the bond actually occurs.
- Children can scent bond to an Omega or Alpha from brith. Typically this is to the Dam. However, in special circumstances, an Omega or Alpha may reject the pup, and another Omega/Alpha can take them in.
- Pups instinctively recognize their Dam or Sire. (Old Wizarding families might use the term Pater instead of Sire, but they’re not a big part of this fic)
- Special Note: The Death of a mate is a painful, depressive experience. It can cause ‘episodes’ in the living mate, eventually leading to suicide if left unchecked.
