Summary
Maria and Tommy Miller separated just as the winter snow melted into the rainfall of spring. It was a quiet affair, with Tommy moving into the apartment across from Flora by the middle of March, no grand gestures or explanations given to anyone, but the townsfolk of Jackson still ran with it. Flora almost thought it might’ve been better if they’d made a public announcement about it, really— The gossip fodder was gigantic, ranging from torrid love affairs to explosive fighting during patrols to someone claiming they were told by someone else’s friend’s cousin that Jackson’s royal couple had broken up because Tommy couldn’t perform.
Flora didn’t believe most of the gossip, but it was the defeated slump of Tommy’s shoulders, the dark circles under his eyes and the mocking whispering that followed him around that made her react the way she did. It started with a small lie, a snarky suggestion that Tommy might’ve already moved on with a much younger woman and that they were getting down.
She never expected the situation to unravel the way it did.
