Slow to shrug off her morning grogginess, Rumi cocooned herself in a plush comforter on the couch next to Zoey. She absently fixated on the tv to stay awake, but even the power of skateboarding turtles wearing silly helmets couldn't stand a chance against Zoey's cozy cuddles.
The infinite softness of the comforter was given shape by Zoey's arms, wrapping just the right amount of warm, body-heated cushion around Rumi in all the right places. She nestled heavily on Zoey, face smooshed against her chest as she sank deeper and deeper into her.
Every time she dozed off, she heard Zoey's soft giggle and its vibration in her chest like a soft purr in her ear. At one point she thought she felt Zoey's hands reaching for something - probably her phone to take an embarrassing picture of her drooling on her chest - leaning so gently against the cocoon Rumi had made in her lap, careful not to disturb her. Then she stilled again - not by sinking back into the couch in her usual relaxed slouch - the kind of stillness one could only achieve by holding their breath.
“Mm, Zo? What's wrong?”
“Hehe, nothin’,” she giggled, tilting her phone to show Rumi the screen.
Rumi rubbed her eyes against the blanket, blinking as the picture came into focus: Mira smirking in a mirror selfie to show off her leg day pump in her white leggings with the purple HUNTR/X logo vertically covering the side. The skin in her chest and face were flushed pink with sweat, damp hair clinging to the sides of her face.
In the first picture she stood perpendicular to the camera, one leg bent forward to show off the long curve of her glutes rolling off of her hips which were hugged tight by the golden waistband. Zoey swiped to the next picture: Mira faced the mirror directly, legs rotated externally to highlight her massive quad muscles stretching the fabric of her leggings, further accentuated by her very well-toned hamstring muscles. The only distraction from her powerful legs was the smoldering look she offered to Rumi and Zoey through the mirror: head confidently lifted with the hem of her oversized t-shirt in her teeth, exposing the lower part of her matching sports bra and a tall slant of her chiseled abs, packed tight between her obliques like a can of buff sardines.
She had all the sturdiness and sculpted beauty of a marble statue.
Strong. Sexy. And all self-made.
“Nothin’?” Rumi gasped.
“Yeah, no- she's everything.” Zoey's voice quivered with glee, as though she'd just been presented with the tastiest-looking meal of her life. Tasty enough to make her drool - or, wait - no, maybe that was Rumi's from when she was slumped on her chest. “Yeah-” Zoey whispered, tapping at her phone. “Those are getting saved.”
Sharing Zoey's awed reverence, Rumi also whispered: “That's our wife…”
Zoey nodded with a wide grin sprawled across her face. “Yeahhh… we're so lucky.” She pushed a heated breath out. “Rumi. Tell me to put the phone down.”
“Zoey-”
“But she's SO fine! Like-” Zoey groaned and shoved her face in the blanket “God, I'm down so bad for her…”
“You and me both. Honestly, Zoey, I don't know why you thought I could help. I say we keep thirsting.”
“No, Rumi, I'm supposed to be the bad influence. If you're not the voice of reason here then we are doomed!”
“I know, I know… but when she's sending pictures like that, can you blame me?”
Zoey glanced at the phone beside her. Considering. Resisting. But then remembering…
But then, it vibrated.
“Ooh, wifey just texted me!”
“Shit, she knows we're thirsting over her. What did she say? Wait- don't tell me it's another pic.”
“Wait…”
Rumi waited. Then slowly asked, “What is it?”
“I don't know…” she drawled in a quiet confusion.
Rumi lifted her lazy eyes, willing them to remain open and focused. “Is she still at the gym?”
“Yeah, but- wait- ‘distress signal’?”
“What?” Rumi pushed up onto her hands, eyes rounding with concern.
Zoey squinted, silently rereading each message before announcing them with mounting dread. “‘Send help’? ‘I'm down’? ‘I need you'-” Zoey's wide eyes snapped to Rumi, who straightened up and gawked back, suddenly wide awake and preemptively priming herself to move. “Oh my god-”
“Let's go!”
Rumi tore out of her comforter cocoon and hit the floor running. Zoey launched right up behind her, both their chests pounding with a rush of fear as they bolted through the door. Rumi started for the elevator, but Zoey threw her arm out in front of her. She had her phone out.
“Wait! She said she's on the stairs?”
They turned around and sprinted for the stairwell door, pushing through it and racing down the steps. Rumi peered over the railing while moving with tight, careful steps, spotting a familiar mane of red hair a few flights down.
“I see her,” Rumi said briskly. Mira sat across a single stair, legs lying straight across it with her back to the wall, still in her gym outfit. Her clothes and skin appeared undamaged at a glance, but she sat eerily still with a lopsided posture. Zoey's shin-kal flashed into her hands, preparing to split the skulls of any demons that would dare to harm their girlfriend.
“Mira!”
Mira was already watching them race to her, a dejected frown crossed over her face.
“Hey, guys-”
Rumi reached her first and glanced for blood or any other sign of damage while Zoey jumped the railing, hooked onto the overhang below and landed next to them with her hands drawn back and ready to…
“Wait- Where are the demons?” Zoey's stance relaxed, then she ran to the railing and scanned the flights beneath them, then turned back up above. Nothing. Not even a sound aside from the ducts humming faintly through the walls.
“Demons?” Mira blurted, just as surprised as them.
“Yeah, you- you sent a distress signal.”
Rumi cut in: “‘Send help, I'm down’?”
Mira glanced with a hard stare between them.
“Yeah.” She scoffed. “Yeah, I… guys. I wasn't attacked or anything. I just need help up the stairs,” she muttered pitifully.
Rumi's squint drew even tighter and more confused. Zoey's weapons disappeared in a blue shimmer, shoulders relaxing and hands falling to her sides.
“So you're not in danger?”
“No,” she laughed, “if there were demons, we all would have sensed a ripple in the Honmoon.”
Rumi chewed on the inside of her cheek. “You know what? You are totally right. We're dumb.”
“You're not dumb.” Mira sighed and tilted her gaze away, voice thinning in a bashful, very un-Mira-like way. “I was pushing myself really hard today with a few extra sets and I was amped about it, so I decided to go the extra extra mile and take the stairs back up instead of the elevator. Didn't make it,” she shrugged.
Rumi leaned against the railing and pushed the lump of stress out of her chest through a deep exhale. Zoey crouched next to Mira on the stair above her, smiling as she rubbed the top of her head.
“That's awesome babe, but you can't overdo it like that.”
“Well I wasn't gonna bitch out.”
“We were really worried.”
Mira looked up to her, then to Rumi, eyes rounding with remorse.
“Sorry. I was trying to be funny about it, because running out of gas thirty steps away from the door is pretty embarrassing.” She gestured bitterly at the flight of stairs above them. “I can literally see it from here.”
Rumi moved next to Zoey and offered her hand to Mira.
“Sounds like you've done all you can for today. Fuck the last thirty stairs - let your girlfriends carry you home.”
“Yeah- we've gotta get some exercise in if we're going to keep up with you, Mira.”
“You guys are overdue for a workout, by the way,” Mira smirked while accepting their help to her feet. Her legs wobbled and sank the moment her weight fell onto them, but Rumi and Zoey caught her arms and propped her up between them.
“Oh my god- ew.” Rumi blanched, making Zoey stifle a laugh.
“Mira, you are so sweaty!”
“Yeah… I'm going to be so fucking sore tomorrow,” she smirked, her voice tired and breathy but still oozing with pride.
“And that's why,” Rumi said as they rounded the stairwell, “you're staying on the couch and relaxing right after you shower.”
“Sounds like a movie niiiight,” Mira sang, tossing a grin to Zoey.
“Yeah! Movies! Rumi?” Zoey was already bubbly with excitement that she just couldn't shut down.
“Yeah. Movies!”
“Mov-ies! Mov-ies! Mov-ies! Couch, couch, couch!”
They all laughed as they trudged through the door to their loft and then into Mira's bathroom. Rumi helped Mira climb out of her sticky clothes while Zoey reached in the glass door and tapped the electronic display embedded within the wall, summoning a soon-to-be steaming torrent of water from the showerhead.
“Made it a little hotter so it's nice and extra relax-y on your big ol’ muscles,” Zoey said, laying a lasting kiss on her neck. She pulled away, but her hand lingered on the toned, solid surface of Mira's abs. “Really hot muscles…”
A slow chuckle rumbled behind Mira's lips. “Thanks, babe.”
“Mhm! I'm gonna go pick a movie. Enjoy your shower!”
Rumi slanted her eyes at Mira. “A Zoey movie night? Brace yourself, Mira.”
“Hey!” Zoey's outraged shout rang clear from the other room. “You guys love my movies!”
Rumi grinned and laid a folded towel on the counter beside Mira. “I'll have your - protein shake ready,” she said between planting a kiss on her cheek.
“Thanks, babe.”
Mira offered a sweet smile as Rumi turned and walked away.
“Don't get attacked by any demons!”
“You'll know if I do!” Mira called back. “Bitch,” she chuckled as she closed the shower door behind her, sighing as the water washed the grime and heat off of her body; replaced by the warm and tender care of her loves.
