If You're Happy and You Know It

Summary:

Separating yourself from your children is never easy, especially when they don't want you to leave them alone in the classroom.

Notes:

OKAY so I'm basing some of the characters as well as the school layout on my work experience. In my country classes are named after fun things to encourage the kids to stay. Also the title chapters are kids' songs bc now that i work with children they're stuck in my head all damn day.

Chapter 1: Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun, please shine down on me

Chapter Text

It’s the first day of pre-school and Seokjin is a little bit more than nervous. He was barely able to sleep last night, tossing and turning in the bed until Yoongi dug his claws onto his forearm and warned that if he didn’t stop moving he would have to sleep somewhere else. At his husband’s threatening voice Seokjin quivered and stayed still, knowing full well that Yoongi would very gladly kick him out of the room if he tried to interrupt his husband’s beauty sleep anymore.

He couldn’t help but feel this way, it was the first time they left Namjoon and Hoseok somewhere for an extended period of time. This wasn’t like dropping them off at his brother’s house or with his parents, this would be the two eldest kids going to a class and interacting with other children on their own, without any help from Seokjin. Thankfully they would be in the same class with Soonyoung, who they already knew and trusted.

He had bags under his eyes as he carried Namjoon to the classroom. Jimin and Taehyung had been dropped off at his parent’s house the day before so neither him nor Yoongi would have to stay at home. Said blond man was holding Hoseok’s hand and had his professional camera hanging from his neck, looking warily at the brightly-colored halls and the cutesy names that decorated each door.

“Magic Circus, here it is” Yoongi said, nodding his head towards a red door decorated with a lion and a clown. Seokjin opened the door, peering in to find parents and children already playing inside. Jeonghan was playing with toy cars with Soonyoung in the corner while Seungcheol took pictures of them and balanced two-year-old Jihoon in his arms.

“Hello! My name is Lee Soonkyu, but you can call me Miss Sunny” a woman said to him, her hair was dyed bright red and she wore a bright blue shirt with the school’s logo stitched onto it. She waved her hands near her face and smiled.

“Hello, my name is Kim Seokjin, this is my husband Min Yoongi and these are my children Namjoon and Hoseok” as he gestured towards Hoseok the boy hid behind Yoongi, clutching the fabric of his jeans in his tiny fists.

“Good morning Namjoon and Hoseok!” the woman greeted. Namjoon shifted his weight forward in Seokjin’s arms before looking back at his father, a serious look on his face.

“Papa down” the kid instructed and Seokjin did as told. The kid then looked up at him and opened his hand, letting his father place the Ryan-themed backpack in it.

“Hoseokie, you too, come on” Seokjin urged, but Hoseok made a whimper and stayed rooted. Meanwhile Namjoon was bouncing on his feet impatiently. Seokjin shot a panicked look at Miss Sunny.

“Don’t worry, this is completely normal” she crouched to look at Namjoon “Namjoon-ah, why don’t you go put your backpack in one of the cubby holes and then go play on the tables?” the kid nodded and went to do as told, leaving Seokjin and Yoongi with Hoseok.

“Hoseok-ah, I have many toys for you to play! Why don’t you come in with me?” Miss Sunny offered a hand to Hoseok but the boy shook his head.

“Hobi come on” Yoongi said, reaching back to unlatch his son’s hands from his jeans. Hoseok let out a cry and then ran over to Seokjin, opening his arms for him to carry the boy.

“I’m sorry, he doesn’t have any issues when staying with his grandparents” Seokjin commented as Hoseok dug his face in the crook of his neck.

“It’s okay! Sometimes children can have a hard time unlatching from their parents, it happens” the woman answered, reaching to pat Hoseok in the back of the head softly.

“What do we do?” Yoongi asked, looking behind the woman to watch over Namjoon, who had grabbed an armful of legos and had dumped them in the playmats, sitting down to begin constructing them.

“We encourage parents to come in until the class starts and if he’s okay by then you can leave, or is it that you have work?” the woman asked. Both of the parents shook their heads.

“It’s okay, we can stay for a little while” Seokjin said, feeling anxious. Hoseok refused to look at the woman in the eye and this was a bad sign.

They stepped into the classroom, Yoongi immediately beelining over to Namjoon, who was playing quietly by himself, he had always been the more independent out of the four children. Meanwhile Seokjin took Hoseok over to the cubby holes and placed the green backpack next to Namjoon’s.

“Hyung, you got here” Jeonghan greeted from the corner. Soonyoung looked over at them and smiled.

“Daddy it’s Hoseokie!” the boy screamed, making another boy who was playing next to him frown.

“Indoor voice please” Miss Sunny called from where she was greeting a little girl.

“Hoseok, look who’s here! It’s your friend!” Seokjin said, nudging Hoseok. The child looked down at Soonyoung before shaking his head and grabbing onto Seokjin’s neck tighter.

“Having a hard time?” Seungcheol asked and the eldest nodded.

“He doesn’t want to stay here”

“Soonyoung was like that for a bit, trust me, he’ll get used to it in no time” Jeonghan said, ruffling his son’s hair. Seokjin wanted to trust him with all his might, he didn’t want to see his boy suffer over the separation.

Thirty minutes later proved that Hoseok was a lost case. He had refused to be put in the ground for fifteen minutes and then he had cried when he was not touching Seokjin. Meanwhile Yoongi was too busy taking pictures of Namjoon and Soonyoung, who had teamed up to build a big castle with the legos.

“Okay parents! It’s time for the class to start” Miss Sunny said, the class had around thirteen kids and mostly all of the parents had already left. The few ones that remained began saying their goodbyes to their children, ignoring pouting lips and teary eyes.

“Papa no!” Hoseok said, running to Seokjin’s legs. The man shot a look at the woman and she walked over to them.

“I think that it would be the best for one of you to stay for a little while so he can adapt easier to the classroom” Miss Sunny said helpfully.

“I’ll stay then” Seokjin said, eyes glued to Hoseok.

“I’ll be going, your mom just texted me that Taehyung broke one of her lamps” Yoongi said, leaning to kiss Namjoon on the forehead. The boy sat next to the other kids in the floor and waved his dad goodbye. It kind of made Seokjin hurt to see how independent Namjoon actually was, but he guessed that was better than Hoseok, who didn't want to sit on the floor.

“Oh God, as if I didn’t have anything to make me more nervous” Seokjin muttered, hoisting Hoseok up to say goodbye to Yoongi. After a quick kiss was pressed to his lips and then another to Hoseok’s forehead his husband stepped out of the classroom.

“Okay Mr. Kim and Hoseokie, please sit down” Seokjin did as told, sitting next to Namjoon and placing his son on his legs. Miss Sunny began the class by turning on some music, a catchy song to say hello as she waved her hands enthusiastically at the children. Some of them, like Soonyoung, followed her with equal excitement while others, like Namjoon, just blinked at her.

“Good morning everybody! How is Miss Sunny?” she cocked her head towards the children, ignoring how no one has answered.

“I’m very good! How are you Junghwa?” she addressed a girl on the corner of the semi-circle that the kids had formed, she stayed quiet “very good!”

She continued on, asking the children how they felt on that day. Around five of them answered brightly and she moved onto Seokjin.

“How is Mr. Km?” she raised her eyebrows.

“Very good!” Seokjin answered and clapped his hands.

“How are you Hoseok?” the boy turned around to look at Seokjin and his father nodded, encouraging him to answer.

“V-very good!” Hoseok said, the hints of a smile on his lips. Seokjin was ecstatic to see him answer.

“And how are you Namjoon?” she asked and Namjoon bounced from where he was sitting.

“I’m great!” Miss Sunny looked shocked for a little, but recovered quickly.

“He has an extensive vocabulary” Seokjin explained, proud of his son.

After a song that talked about the days of the week and another one calling for Mister Sun to come out, Miss Sunny handed out yellow stars to the children, asking them to take care of them so they could play with them another day. Before she handed one out to Hoseok she patted his head.

“Hoseokie, I’ll give you a star if you sit in the floor, okay?” Hoseok looked doubtful for a moment, but after Seokjin’s encouraging nod the boy sat next to Namjoon and took the star, showing it off to his brother.

“Papa it’s pretty!” Namjoon said, waving it around between his two hands.

“Yes it is sweetie” Seokjin said, and then asked the children to please smile at his phone’s camera so he could take a picture of them playing happily with the stars. He sent the picture to Yoongi and then watched as Miss Sunny began mimicking the new song. Namjoon and Hoseok seemed interested in trying to mimic her actions, unlike some of the other children who were too busy staring at the stars in their hands to pay attention to her.

Suddenly there was a ripping sound and Namjoon began pouting, the star he’d been given was broken in half and it lay on his hands uselessly. Before he could begin sniffling Hoseok bumped his brother’s shoulder and took the broken star away, handing him his instead. Namjoon looked at Hoseok with a worried expression, but as the eldest handed the broken star back he smiled at him, as if telling Namjoon everything was okay. Seokjin was proud to see Hoseok be so kind and supportive of his little brother, especially after he had been the one to be scared of being alone in the beginning. Seokjin grinned at his children, backing up to the corner of the classroom as the two of them switched their heads to listen to Miss Sunny sing with rapt attention.

Fifteen minutes later he got an okay sign from Miss Sunny and he nodded at her before leaving, feeling like he was leaving a big part of his heart in the classroom with his children. He'd have to tell Yoongi to bring the camera the next days to capture their son's first days in pre-school, not wanting to lose any precious moment of their lives.
