Work Text:
"What would you do if I abstracted tomorrow?"
It all changed so fast. One minute they were a team, singing and laughing and actually having fun, like they were friends. And the next, they were... not. She's confused, why is he acting like this? Like nothing between them mattered? Was it something she did? Or was it all fake? No, she won't believe that. There was definitely something there.
Jax turns back to her, his expression no longer cocky or happy like it was moments before.
"I'd move on." Then he smiles, tilting his head a bit to the side. "And probably forget about you."
She looks at him, not with a shocked look, not even sad. Just... blank. Like something broke in her. Everything became too real at that moment. The silence was deafening, the colors just too vibrant. She could feel the fake air move around her. She grips the gun tightly, trying to process his response. She can't deny it, she thought they had something, whether she was attracted to him or just liked him as a friend, this still hurt. A lot.
"Okay... Okay..." She nods a little, not really saying it to him but more to herself. She turns back, trying not to break down entirely. "I understand..." She looks down at the floor, her breaths ragged. She raises the gun a little, staring at it, starting to shake a little.
Jax scoffs, then chuckles. "Geez, you really can't take a joke, can you?"
She doesn't respond or even acknowledge that he said anything. She just stares at the gun in her hand, shaking even more now.
"...Pomni?" Jax calls to her, starting to get a little worried. Sure, he shouldn't care, but even someone like him starts getting worried when someone with a gun looks to be having a mental breakdown.
Slowly, Pomni turns the gun towards her face, then pulls the trigger.
Jax stares at her body, which now lays motionless on the ground. There's a bullet hole going straight through her head, though there's no blood. He steps back, slowly realizing what just happened. She killed herself. She really killed herself. After a moment the body despawns, leaving the gun on the floor. He stands there, frozen, unsure of how to react. He didn't do anything, so why does he feel responsible for this? Why does he feel guilty for what she did? He didn't want to admit that he actually cares for her, he can't. He doesn't even notice that he's shaking. His breathing becomes labored, and he clutches his chest.
No no no, this wasn't supposed to happen. I didn't... I didn't...
He turns and runs back to his room, slamming the door shut, not even bothering to lock it.
. . .
When Pomni comes to, she sees that she's in some dimly lit room with a large fish tank in the middle, and a sign that says 'Loser Corner' hanging on the wall.
"Pomni?" Ragatha says from behind her. Pomni turns and sees everyone whom they had killed earlier. They are all looking at her, surprised that she is even down there.
Pomni doesn't respond, she can't. She doesn't really understand why she wanted to shoot herself, it was weird. It wasn't even painful at all; Her vision went blank, then she spawned here.
"I can't believe that he shot you." Zooble says from their seat, their arms crossed as best as they could be. "I mean, it's totally in character, but you guys actually seemed to be having fun."
Pomni looks at the floor, still not responding. A part of her wants to defend Jax, but the thought of their reactions if she were to tell them that she shot herself terrified her.
"Well, Caine should be letting us out, since the game's finished..." Ragatha speaks up from the silence, trying to change the subject.
"He's probably going to take us back to the tent any second now." Kinger adds, distracted by a glowing green caterpillar that's on his hand.
Caine, as a matter of fact, did not. Not for at least an hour.
