SCP-****: A Desert Mirage

Summary:

This is an article written in the SCP file format about a recently discovered desert phenomena.

Notes:

I felt like challenging myself by writing something original in the SCP format.

Work Text:

Clearance Level: 2

Item #: ****

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: A 3 meter tall fence is to be placed around the entirety of the perimeter of the SCP at all times alongside signage that prohibits entry placed around the perimeter of said fence.

Description: SCP-**** is a phenomenon that takes place inside of a 5 meter perimeter that surrounds a specific large rock that is located slightly south of the Route 190 road within California’s Death Valley. Once any living organism enters the perimeter of this rock the immediate surrounding area beyond these 5 meters will be replaced with a seemingly infinitely sprawling desert. Any organism is allowed to enter or exit the 5 meter perimeter of SCP-**** whenever they choose to do so seemingly without any negative repercussions. When said organism leaves this perimeter reality will return back to normal.

Document ****-1-a: Dirt samples have brought back from SCP-****. When analyzed the dirt wasn’t similar to any other mineral that has ever been found on Earth. Further samples have yielded similar results.

Document ****-1-b: The foundation has tried various methods to remove this rock from the premises of SCP-****. Some of these methods include trying to dig it out using shovels, trying to break it using pick axes, trying to break it using a jack hammer, trying to blow it up with dynamite, and trying to pull it out with a tow truck. All of these methods so far have been unsuccessful. Dr. ********** suggested the use of an atomic bomb to blow up the rock, but this suggestion has yet to receive approval.

Document ****-1-c: To find out what other potential anomalous properties this SCP has an experiment has been run in which a single D-Class was sent in with enough food, water, and various other supplies that would allow him to spend several days inside of SCP-****. They also set up a camera within the perimeter so that the researchers back at the foundation could check in on SCP-****. The first thing that he noticed is that the sun never set inside of the 5 meter perimeter. Aside from that there wasn’t much else of note that happened within the first couple of days of the observation. On the fourth day he noticed a “mirage” in the distance that definitely wasn’t there the previous day. He tried to approach said “mirage”, but as soon as he left the perimeter where the “mirage” was previously located was replaced with the road of Route 190. When he re-entered the perimeter the “mirage” was gone. Soon after this he was nearly out of supplies and was brought back to the foundation.

Document ****-1-d: A group of 5 D-Class were sent into the perimeter with enough food, water and various other supplies that would allow them to spend several weeks inside of SCP-****. Just like the last experiment the sun never set and the “mirage” appeared again on the fourth day. As the days progressed they noticed that the “mirage” was slowly yet surely moving towards them. On the seventh day a second “mirage” was spotted in almost the exact opposite direction of the first “mirage”. On the tenth day a third “mirage” appeared. At this point they also noticed that the first “mirage” was moving even faster than it had been before. After about 21 days when they were running out of supplies and had to leave the perimeter there were 6 “mirages” converging on their location with the closest of them being roughly about 10 meters away with all of them approaching more quickly as they got closer to the perimeter. As soon as they left the perimeter the surrounding area returned to normal and the “mirages” disappeared.

Document ****-1-e: For a final experiment a single D-Class was sent in with enough food, water, and various other supplies that would allow him to spend a little over a month inside of SCP-****. Similarly to the previous experiments the sun never set and the first “mirage” appeared on the fourth day, but in a distinctly different direction from last time. Every 3 days another “mirage” would appear in the distance in a seemingly random location. After about a month the first “mirage” was within a single meter of the perimeter. Upon closer inspection the “mirage” appeared to be a shadow on the ground with a slight shimmer to it that made it look as if a shadow could somehow be made of water, but didn’t seem to actually be a shadow cast by any specific object. Right before the “mirage” entered the perimeter of SCP-**** the camera signal was lost. When the researchers approached the location of SCP-**** the next day the D-Class personnel was gone without a trace along with all of his equipment.

Document ****-1-f: After the events of the previous experiment more dirt samples were taken from the perimeter of SCP-**** and were analyzed. This yielded similar results of the previous dirt sample, but this time among the unknown minerals there actually ended up being something familiar. The makeup of this substance was remarkably similar to that of human bones, but ground down to a dust like powder. No further experiments have yet to been run on SCP-**** after finding these results.
