Chapter Text
Oikawa tapped away mindlessly on his phone. He then laughed at something on twitter. “Tooru.. there's a parrot that needs looking at.” The taller of the two frowned deeply and placed his phone down. He then looked at Akaashi who smirked while writing something down on a clipboard. “Now you know you specialize in birds and not me.” Oikawa furrowed his brows and pouted at Akaashi.
“My break started 2 minutes ago.” Akaashi winked and walked away whistling. Oikawa rolled his eyes and walked to the front office. “Dr. Oikawa here, where is-“ “DUCK!!” Oikawa's eyes shot open as he ducked and watched a parrot fly over his head. He grabbed the top of his head and went to the side and saw an apologetic Komori. “Sorry, keiji went on break. I thought I could handle it..” Komori covered his head with an orange clipboard.
“Don’t sweat it..” Oikawa finally got up and looked around. Oikawa watched as the parrot landed on a shelf. “Where’s Tetsu-Chan?” The older of the two asked. “Taking care of a tiger cub..” Komori stepped on the front desk counter to grab the frog that somehow ended up there.
“Great, now I- a tiger cub!?” Oikawa whipped his head back to Komori. “Yeah, the zoo 20 minutes from here didn’t have any vets.. so they brought one here instead.” Komori grabbed the frog and jumped down from the counter. “We can’t have a treacherous animal in a neighborhood vet!?” Oikawa pinched the bridge of his nose. “Well, Yachi said it was either this or go to the zoo itself.” Both Komori and Oikawa turned to see Kuroo holding an animal crate.
“Well, obviously go there.” Oikawa placed a hand on his hip. “The rookies don’t have a JCZWM diploma!” Komori grabbed the crate from Kuroo and placed it in a cage. He watched as the tiger cub licked itself and curled up. “Then.. Me you, Tetsu-Chan and kei-Chan will go there ourselves and leave Hitoka-Chan here!” Oikawa said, pushing up his reading glasses. “Are you sure Yachi will be able to handle all these animals?” Kuroo replied and took off his gloves.
“She’s more than capable.” Akaashi walked through the doors. He then took a look around the room and spotted the parrot, he made a few whistle noises to call the parrot towards him. It landed on his arm and stayed there. “Well your break lasted for about 5 minutes.” Oikawa shot Akaashi a bothered glare. “I heard you say zoo, and I’ve been dying to get my hands- I mean to research those Blakistone fish owls.” Akaashi practically dreamed while saying that. He then looked back at the trio that stared at him with disturbed faces.
“What did I say wrong?” Akaashi asked, rubbing the parrot's neck as it leaned in the feeling. “Back to what I was saying…. Hitoka-Chan should be fine and we’ll come back 4 hours after closing!” Oikawa clasped his hands together. “We can’t just show up, we’ll need scheduled appointments.” Komori sat down in a rolling chair.
“Who says we can’t make one right now, they clearly brought in a tiger cub so of course they need help.” Kuroo had already picked up the phone and started to dial numbers.
-
“I look horrible!?” Oikawa silently yelled as he looked at the khaki pants he had on. “At least you have on a teal scrub shirt!” Komori pointed out happily. The brunette rolled his eyes. He then turned to Akaashi and looked like he was bursting with excitement. “Okay, what’s going on with keiji..” Kuroo asked, trying to ignore Akaashi's excitement.
As the group discussed things another person had walked up. He had dark brown hair and looked like an actual normal person. “Hello, I’m Ennoshita Chikara, you guys are the vets right?” Ennoshita asked while holding 4 different books. They all nodded in unison. “Great!” Ennoshita handed each of them an individual book. They all read the titles silently. “Wait wait wait.” Oikawa said instantly as he read the title of the book. “Reptiles..?” His mouth formed into a frown and looked at Ennoshita. “Yes? What seems to be the problem?” Ennoshita asked, looking confused. “Well-“ “nothings the problem!”
Akaashi cut Oikawa off. Oikawa had looked at Akaashi with betrayal. “Great! Now follow me.” Ennoshita led the way as they walked with him. “Don’t worry Tooru, at least you won’t be eaten alive.” Kuroo gave a thumbs up. “Yes of course! Being death rolled by an alligator, or bitten by a poisonous snake, means nothing to worry about.” Oikawa fussed out.
“Well what did you get?.” Komori asked looking a Kuroo. “Felines, I’d say I’m in my territory.” Kuroo had a smug smirk on his face. “What about you?” He peeped over to Komori's book. “I got Canidae, I never work with foxes or wolves or anything like that so I hope it goes well.” He smiled a little and kicked a few rocks.
“Andddd you Keiji?” Kuroo asked. Akaashi smirked widely as he showed the book that said ‘Aves.’ “That’s why you didn’t wanna switch!! Oh you little-!?” Oikawa was about to lunge at Akaashi before Ennoshita turned around.
“Well, we’re here! Dr. Oikawa, that’s your name right? You’ve received the green book which is about reptiles, so you’ll be working with our reptile keeper. Iwaizumi Hajime, Iwaizumi, Oikawa, Oikawa, Iwaizumi.” Ennoshita went back and forth with the two.
Oikawa, was amazed. He looked Iwaizumi up and down, and yeah he maybe was a little shorter but god did those muscles and tan make up for it. Oikawa then placed out a hand. “Nice to meet you.” He put on his signature smile. It was the smile he used most of the time when someone would come to the vet and complain about their dog eating a glue stick, or their cat eating a full umbrella.
“Do you know how to extract venom from a mamba to create antivenom?” The other question obviously mean mugging Oikawa. While Oikawa's face turned into a frown he heard a trio is chuckles behind him. “I’m sure they’ll get along..” Ennoshita chuckled nervously and walked off with Komori, Kuroo, and Akaashi.
“Next is our Feline keeper.” Ennoshita pointed to a two toned male holding a lion cub in his hands like it had wronged him. “Kuroo, that is Kenma.” Ennoshita pointed to Kenma. “At least you won’t be death rolled by an Alligator.” Akaashi laughed, obviously mocking what Oikawa said from the beginning of the day. “Real funny.” Kuroo rolled his eyes.
Kuroo walked up to Kenma. “Sooo, where are you the one that dropped off the tiger club last week?” Kuroo asked, trying to make small talk. “No. That was Lev.” Kenma said flatly, obviously not keeping the conversation going. Kuroo laughed nervously as he watched Kenma place down the cub and walk away. “Great..” Kuroo rocked nervously on his feet until he followed Kenma.
“Alright, two more to go!” Ennoshita said happily as the duo walked behind him. They walked for a good bit until they started to slow down, and that was where Akaashi got excited as he saw about 30 different birds. “Do you guys have any Spix’s Macaws here?” Akaashi grew even more excited.
“Sadly no, but we do have other birds from South America that came here if you’re interested.” Ennoshita gave a small smile and pushed open a door that led to a huge dome, the dome had glass all around. Both Akaashi and Komori gasped as they looked around. “Bokuto, the Avian keeper should be here.. I think..” Ennoshita scratched the back of his neck nervously.
“HEYYYYYY!” They all looked up and saw Bokuto on one leg on a rock with birds from his arms to all on his head. “Yeah, there he is.. Bokuto Koutarou.” Ennoshita sighed and looked at Akaashi. But it seemed that Akaashi was actually amazed and not weirded out.
“He has a thing for birds…and guys with muscles." Komori leaned over and told Ennoshita. Ennoshita then hummed in acknowledgment. “Is that the vet?” Bokuto titled his head and so did one of the birds. At that moment it seemed that Akaashi melted even more. “Yes, my name is Akaashi Keiji.” Akaashi pushed down his little kid excitement and turned on his professional voice.
As Bokuto put down his arms the bird flew away. He then jumped from the rock and made his way towards Akaashi. Bokuto then put his fist forward for a fist bump. “Thanks for coming!” The male announced with a closed eyes wide smile. At that moment Akaashi may have found that Blakistone fish owl. “Anytime.” Akaashi did a fist bump but probably softer than what Bokuto expected.
“Well.. they hit it off better than the other two.” Ennoshita laughed slightly. He then proceeded to lead Komori another way. “Are we not leaving the dome?” Komori asked. Ennoshita shook his head slightly and continued to walk. They walked through a tunnel before they entered another dome. Komori slightly stumbled back when a reddish fox with a stripe down its back and across its shoulders zoomed past his feet.
“God damn it Rin! Ya let Holy out again!” A deep accent was heard. “And, for you Komori, Canidae, I pray for you..” Ennoshita said quickly. When Komori went to look back up he saw Ennoshita running out the dome.
“Oh..” He let out quietly. Komori then took a look at the person in front of him. Buff, strong, and a slight tan. “Nice ta’ meet ya’.”The taller said with a strong accent. “I’m Osamu Miya.” The other held out his hand for a handshake. Komori smiled politely and accepted the hand shake. “ An’ him over there, that’s Suna Rintarou.” Osamu pointed to another male that was holding a fox and furrowed eyebrows. He didn’t have the same tan lined or buffness, but he was slightly taller and slender and more sharp.
The other male then turned his head. “Nice to meet you.” Suna tilted his head with a slight smile. Komori then nodded in acknowledgement and smiled back.
