The Doctor uttered those words in her mind over and over again. He would do again, every time he was joined by a new friend, new eyes to look at the universe with, new jokes to laugh at, a new heart to beat in time with theirs as they ran. Grabbing spacesuits from the TARDIS, stepping out into the nothing, smile illuminated by the starlight.
“I’d break the universe to save you.”
But he hadn’t. And the weight of Katarina, Adric, Lucie, Tamsin, Alex---
tower over her, inescapable. He could never forgive himself.
