Two engagement rings

Summary:

Enjolras is ready to pop the question but doesn’t realise that Grantaire has something up his sleeve too :DD

Work Text:

Enjolras woke that morning feeling nervous. His legs shook, his hands fidgeted and he was slightly out of breath.

“Come on Enjolras,” he told himself, “Pull yourself together. You can do this.”

He reached into his bedside table and took out a small black box which held a simple golden ring engraved with ‘R & E’. He smiled excitedly. He was going to propose today.

Enjolras made his way downstairs and found Grantaire in the kitchen. R looked skittish but grinned widely when he saw his boyfriend.

“Um-I-uh made breakfast.” He said with a shy smile and gestured to the table where there were pancakes with strawberries, blueberries and golden syrup. Enj returned his grin, his stomach rumbling.

“Thank you, love.”

They sat opposite each other in comfortable silence but both were behaving slightly off today. Too busy trying to appear normal to notice each other’s nervous energy.

“Hey,” R opened, “I was wondering if you want to come on a walk down the river with me today?”

Enj was shocked. He had just been about to suggest that too but he quickly schooled his features and beamed.

“I’d love to.”

Later that day Enjolras stood by the front door in his best attire. Black trousers with a red, white and blue cockade embroidered on the pocket (a symbol of the revolution) and a new red silk shirt. R walked down the stairs just as well dressed in dark trousers and a green shirt.

“You look nice.” Enjolras said warmly.

“And you look dashing as always Apollo.”

Enjolras rolled his eyes but laughed a little. Then he held out a bouquet of carnations.

“For you!”

R gasped and held out a bouquet of red tulips he had hiding behind his back.

“And for you too.”

They began to laugh uncontrollably and soon headed out of the door towards the river.

As they walked, the nervous energy returned and Enjolras kept on checking for something in his pocket.

“Hey, you ok?” R asked, finally noticing that Enjolras was even quieter than usual. He nodded.

“Never been better.” He said but the nervous energy still lingered.

“Ok…”

They continued their walk in silence. Eventually, they neared a picnic setup.

“For you, monsieur.” R said with exaggerated charm.

Enjolras giggled, “It’s like you think we’re at some ball or something.”

“Well we’re certainly dressed for one! Here,” he said taking a bottle of wine, “have a drink!”

Enjolras took it from his hand and had a swig for courage before passing it back to R.

“You know,” he said, suddenly soft, “my life has been so much better since you came into it.”

R blushed

“I mean it! I feel happier, more free. And it’s all because of you.”

“Aw, Enj, I feel the same way. I was stuck in a pit of despair, always drinking before I met you. But you were always there for me. You kept reaching out your hand. I am forever grateful.” He began to choke up.

“And so…” R took a small box from his pocket, bent down on one knee and asked, “Enjolras, will you marry me?”

Enjolras was in shock! Then he started laughing and pulled out a ring from his pocket.

“I was going to ask you the same thing!” He laughed. “Of course I’ll marry you Grantaire! I love you!”

R began to laugh too and kissed him. They were so happy and as the sun set on them all they could think about was how they were going to spend the rest of their lives together, forever.
