Work Text:

Logan stood underneath the podium with Oscar's parents and team, beaming up at his partner standing beneath the lights, champagne spraying down and just catching them. The season had gone right down to the last race, a matter of points separating Oscar and Lando. Logan had always had faith that Oscar would win the Championship, but he still hadn't quite believed it had really happened until his car had roared across the finish line in first place.

His partner was the champion of the world, and Logan could not be more proud.

When the three above them disappeared off the podium, Oscar still looking dazed with Max guiding him off, Logan turned to Nicole and Chris. They were wearing identical smiles, exhilarated and exhausted all in one go.

What Logan had meant to say was something along the lines of 'I knew he could do it', or 'where shall we wait for him?'. What came out instead was, “I'm going to ask him to marry me.”

His own brain didn't get a chance to process what he just said before he had two pairs of arms thrown around him, Nicole's surprised squeal in his ear.

It's not like he hadn't been turning the idea over in his mind for months, a simple ring tucked into his luggage just in case. But Oscar had been stressed, and it's not like Logan had planned anything. He certainly hadn't planned on accidentality asking for Oscar's parents' blessing.

“Oh Logan, he'll be thrilled.” Nicole was crying now, still holding onto him tight. “I'm so proud of you both.”

Logan blushed, trying not to shuffle. Nicole and Chris were like second parents to him, they'd seen him at his best and worst. He glanced up at Chris, who looked like he was trying his best not to cry himself. He settled on a nod in the end, and a clap on the back. “We really are, son.”

Logan grinned, and the small amount of tension he hadn't realised he'd been holding ebbed away. “Thanks. Just don't say anything, not today. I don't want him to share this memory.”

Oscar's parents nodded, Nicole finally letting Logan go. “Just let us know when, okay?”

“Course.” Logan agreed easily. “Right, we'd better go and find our boy!”

Logan spent the entire night planning as Oscar snored gently next to him. Now that he's put his intention out into the world, he needed it to be perfect. Oscar deserved nothing less, and Logan wasn't sure he would ever manage to deal with the embarrassment of a shitty proposal. Especially not off the back of winning the world championship.

By the time Oscar starts to stir, Logan's got it all sorted, a mental checklist ready. He hears Oscar hum, pulling himself closer without realising.

“Hey Osc.” Logan says softly, rubbing a small pattern into his hair. “You alright there babe?”

Oscar blinks blearily, wincing a little at the light coming through the window. “What time is it?” He asks slowly, as if he was trying to remember how words worked.

“Just after nine.”

“Shit.” Oscar groaned. “It feels like I've been hit by a car.”

“You did have an insane amount to drink.” Logan chuckled.

Oscar opened his eyes at that, looking up at Logan. “Did yesterday happen?” He asked hoarsely. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Logan grinned widely. “Yeah it did.”

“Fuck.” Oscar exhaled, pressing his hands over his face. “Oh my god, fucking hell.”

“You did it.”

“I'm the World Champion?”

“You're the World Champion baby!” Logan cheered. “Always knew it would be yours.”

Oscar groaned, hiding his face in his hands. “I can't believe it.”

“Hey, hey.” Logan pulled Oscar's hands back down. “You worked for this, you earned this. You deserve this.”

“I'm World Champion.” Oscar said again, a smile forming. “Fuck, I'm World Champion!” He cried, followed by a sharp wince. “Oww.”

“Aww baby, head hurting?” Logan teased. “Do you want a coffee?”

“No, I wanna sleep forever.” Oscar groaned.

“No can do. I'm sure your parents want to see you, and so will Mark, and Zak...”

“Ugh yeah, fine.” Oscar sat up, rubbing at his temple. “Can I have coffee?”

Logan raised an eyebrow. “Special word...?”

“Can I have a coffee, please, you dickhead?” Oscar grumbled. Logan laughed, pressing a quick kiss into Oscar's hair.

“All I needed babe.” Logan smirked. “One amazing hangover coffee coming right up.”

“Thank you.” Oscar called after his partner, head in his hands again. Logan couldn't wipe the smile off his face, his plan was in place, and despite Oscar's grumpiness, this moment was basically perfect. He just needed to get Oscar back home, and then he could put his plan in motion and finally propose to his partner. He couldn't wait.

They walked through Melbourne Airport, caps pulled low to try and avoid recognition. Whilst it was rare that someone recognised Logan, Oscar was far more visible, especially as the new home hero. Logan knew that Oscar was grateful to be World Champion, and all that went with it, but he also knew that all he wanted at this moment was to be home.

Oscar's parents had flown back a few days ago, whilst Oscar still had end of season testing to carry out. Logan half argued that Oscar could probably skip out, he'd more than done enough during the season, but his partner was particular to a fault, and always wanted to see where the team could improve. Logan had sat in Oscar's side of the garage, watching the cars roar past on him on the track, and still trying to push down the jealousy that he still felt twinge deep down. One day he might be back on the track, but he knew it was unlikely that it would ever be in one of those cars again.

They managed to pass unseen through the airport, Oscar pulling his scarf up high whenever he thought he saw someone do a double take. Logan squeezed his hand, giving him a small smile. “Hey, worth it to be home, yeah?”

“Yeah, worth it.” Oscar laughed, pulling his scarf up higher. “It's stupid, but I just really want to not get stuck or anything. All I want is to collapse into bed, and have something to eat that isn't room service.”

“I get it.” Logan agreed. “Come on, heads down and walk. We'll be out in no time.”

They walked out through baggage claim, and were greeted by the sight of Oscar's parents, holding a sign saying Welcome Home O & L!!!. Logan heard Oscar groan a little, but when he glanced over his partner was grinning wide. Oscar's parents cheered when they saw them, waving madly. “Hey boys!”

“Hey Mum, Dad.” Oscar beamed, giving them a hug. “You didn't need to pick us up.”

“Can't we spend a little more time with our champion?” Nicole asked, laughing when Oscar tugged at his scarf again. “Also, we figured that you were probably already working yourself up already, and at least this way you can relax on the way home.”

“Thanks.” Logan hugged Nicole. “I swear if he pulls that scarf up any higher he won't have a face left.”

Oscar and Chris started walking together, Nicole grabbed onto Logan's arm, pulling him close.

“Have you asked him yet?” She asked quietly. Logan shook his head.

“No, he threw himself straight back into testing. But I have a plan.” Logan replied. “He needs a recharge here first though.”

Nicole squeezed his arm. “I'm sure he'd say yes whenever you asked.”

“I know.” Logan sighed. “But he's been been there for me so much over the last couple of years, and I want it to... no, he deserves it to be perfect.”

Nicole gave him a look. “You know he'd find it perfect whatever you did.”

Logan sighed. “Fine, I need it to be perfect. He's just won the championship, he's on top of the world, and I need it to be perfect to show him he's not settling.” Logan glanced at Nicole. “Does that make me awful?”

“No.” Nicole smiled. “It makes you human.”

Logan huffed, leaning into Nicole. “Thanks.”

“Hey, no need to say thank you. You're going to be my son-in-law soon, officially. You've been part of this family for years Logan, don't you forget that.”

Logan didn't say anything to that, but looked forward to where Oscar was already talking a million miles with his Dad. Sure, Oscar didn't need perfect, but Logan was damn well going to give it to him if he could.

They spent a couple of weeks in Melbourne, Oscar resting and Logan frantically trying to put everything together for his proposal. It didn't help that Oscar remained almost glued to his side the entire time, Logan having to try and use excuses to hide away (in the bedroom with a headache, the bathroom he'd 'accidentally' gotten stuck in, couldn't find the crisps in the kitchen) to message friends back in Europe. He was so close to getting it all ready, and the closer the departure day came the more nervy he got.

Nicole and Chris kept on giving him looks, and he suspected that they wanted him to propose here, so they could join in the celebration. But it just didn't seem right for them. Their story had started in the UK, and Logan was determined that the next chapter of their life should begin there too. He knew he was being a bit selfish about it, but he was being stubborn about it, and wasn't giving in to any of the hints being dropped by Oscar's parents.

He'd toyed with the idea of messaging his parents, just to let them know. He'd written half-a-dozen messages, all more stilted than the last, and in the end, he wasn't sure what he wanted to say. He'd always envied Oscar and his easy relationship with his parents, and whilst he knew that they saw him as another son, he wished his parents had the same mentality. His parents had barely spoken to him since he'd come out, and he'd heard nothing from his father once his relationship with Oscar had gone public.

He'd finally given in and called his mother one night. Oscar had left to give him some privacy, but he knew deep down he wasn't going to tell his parents about his proposal plans. His mother had answered, with a confused “Logan?”, but he couldn't reply, his words stuck in his throat; he'd ended the call after the longest few seconds of his life.

Oscar had come back upstairs again about ten minutes later, and had found Logan curled up under the duvet, phone turned off. His beautiful, brilliant partner hadn't said anything, just crawled into bed with him, and held him close.

Logan didn't deserve him, but he was going to spend the rest of his life trying to make sure that he was worthy of Oscar eventually.

“Honestly Mum, you didn't need to drive us.” Oscar said, fondly. “We could've gotten a taxi.”

“Oscar, really.” Nicole huffed. “I'm probably not going to see you now for a few months, let me be your mum and drive you places.”

Logan could see Oscar roll his eyes, but he knew that his partner appreciated a little bit extra time with his family. Australia was a long way, and despite the fact that they jetted around the world every few weeks, it was hard to find the time to get half way across the world just to relax.

“I hope you boys both rest when you get back. It's been a long year.” Nicole said from the front. “And I mean actually rest.”

“Yes, Mum.” Oscar sighed. “I won't even go to the MTC, except for the celebration in a couple of days.”

“Good.” Nicole sounded pleased. “I don't want you burning out.”

“I'll make sure he's attached to the sofa.” Logan laughed.

“I'll hold you to that.” Nicole chuckled. “Righto boys, we're here.”

“Thanks Nicole.” Logan leaned over, kissing her on the cheek. “You're a lifesaver.”

“Go on, you sweet talker.” Nicole swatted him away. “Have a good Christmas.”

Oscar leaned over, giving his mum a hug. “We'll come out before the race.”

“I know you will.” Nicole said softly. “Love you, Osc.”

“Love you too Mum.” Oscar gave her a squeeze and a kiss. “I'll message when we land.”

“You'd better.” Nicole laughed. “Go on, get off with you two.”

Oscar gave his mum one last kiss, before they jumped out of the car with their bags and suitcases. Logan turned to head into the airport, but Oscar stood and waited until his mum's car was out of sight. Logan reached for Oscar's hand, resting his chin on the smaller man's shoulder.

“You okay?” Logan asked softly. Oscar nodded, leaning in to his partner's touch.

“Yeah.”

“We can always stay, you know.” Logan said.

“Nah, we can't.” Oscar shrugged. “I love coming back, and I never want to leave, but it's not home anymore.” He turned and gave Logan a gentle kiss. “Let's go home.”

“Hey Lo, are we out of milk?” Logan heard Oscar call from the kitchen, fridge door slamming shut. “How much coffee have you had?”

“It was the cereal that I used it up on.” Logan called back. “Do you want me to go and buy some?”

Logan waited for an answer, but one never came. He sighed, pushing himself away from his desk. Since he'd been fired by Williams, he'd been working on setting up a business, scouting talented kids from karting and supporting up through the ranks. He'd been sort of inspired by what Mark had done with Oscar, and he'd had virtually no interest from any other series about getting a new drive for himself anyway. It meant some long hours, sat in front of his computer or travelling around tracks. He tried to go to as many races with Oscar as possible, but he was starting to see some progress with the scouting – there were always some quick kids out there to support, the next Hamilton, Vettel, Verstappen or Piastri.

“Oscar?” Logan headed downstairs, peering into the kitchen. “Are you having a breakdown about milk?”

“Huh?” Oscar looked up from his phone. “Breakdown about milk?”

“You didn't answer.” Logan explained. “What's up?”

“I don't know.” Oscar sounded exasperated. “I've got all this time off now, and I love you babe, but we can't hang out all the time.”

“Rude.”

“Really rude.” Oscar smirked. “But everyone just seems to be really busy? I don't know, maybe I'm just reading into it too much.”

Logan tried not to react too much. He knew for a fact that all of his and Oscar's friends were on standby for the proposal. He was just waiting for confirmation of the date, and then it would be all systems go. But their friends were under strict orders to keep themselves free, including hanging out with Oscar.

“Maybe they're just busy with family or whatever. And it is nearly Christmas.” Logan thought that sounded reasonable enough. “I'm sure once they've all spent a few days together you'll have no end of playdate invitations.”

“Now who's being rude.” Oscar laughed. “Yeah, you're right. I wasn't really expecting to hear from Lando, but the others... I don't know, maybe I was staring to worry they wouldn't want to hang out now.” The now that I'm world champion was left unsaid; Logan heard it anyway.

Logan sighed, walking over and pulling his partner into a hug. “You dumbass.”

“Yeah I know.” Oscar sighed, hiding his face in Logan's hoodie. “Love you.”

“Love you too.” Logan said fondly. “Even though you're an idiot.”

“Rude.”

“Super rude.”

“Where are we going?”

“What if I just felt like a drive?” Logan deflected. He heard Oscar snort next to him.

“I don't trust that for a second.” Oscar said, crossing his arms. “Where are we going?”

“Would you trust me more if I said it was a surprise?” Logan tried, smiling sweetly, glancing over. Oscar narrowed his eyes.

“No.”

“Well then, don't trust me.” Logan shrugged, tapping on the wheel along with whatever music was playing on the radio. “Good song.”

“I'll turn the radio down.”

“You wouldn't.”

“Where are we going?” Oscar tried again, his hand hovering over the radio. “Try me Sargeant.”

“You'll see.” Was all Logan said, knowing it was winding Oscar up, but if he actually said Silverstone then it would just give Oscar more questions, and they still had an hour left to go. He hadn't come this far for Oscar to just figure it out now.

Oscar definitely knew something was up though. People unavailable, even Mark being evasive. And Logan knew he'd been getting jumpy the longer he'd waited to put his plan into motion. It had been torture waiting long enough to get in the car today, and usually Oscar had to kick him out the door whenever they needed to be somewhere. Oscar's brain was definitely starting to whir; Logan just needed to keep him away from proposal.

“How was your grand welcome home celebration yesterday then?” Logan changed the subject, knowing that his partner would huff and puff over 'too much effort for a trophy', despite deep down appreciating what the team did for him. He listened to Oscar chatter on about 'they didn't need actual streamers', driving closer and closer to their destination.

Silverstone loomed out of the horizon, oddly silent. They were so used to the noise and the constant movement on race weekends, that it was very easy to forget that it wasn't used more often than not.

“What are we doing here?” Oscar asked, confused, eyebrows drawn in. “Logan?”

Logan grabbed his partner's hand, holding on tight. “Just... trust me. Please.”

He must have sounded desperate, because Oscar didn't question him for once. They drove up to the parking barrier, one man stood beside it. “Heya Andy.”

“Hey Logan.” The man said, grinning at Oscar. “Finally cashed in that favour then.”

“Hey, good things come to those who wait, isn't that what you guys say?” Logan chuckled.

Andy laughed. “One day you'll even lose that accent and truly become one of us.” He said, before letting them through. “I'll see you on the other side.”

Logan waved as they drove through, heading over the bridge. He knew Oscar was staring at him, but if Logan looked over now he wasn't sure if he just wouldn't blurt out his question.

“Who was that?”

“One of the security guys for the place, he owed me a favour.”

“Do I wanna know why?”

Logan gave a strained laugh. “No, probably not.”

They pulled up behind the national pits, in what would normally be a busy car park. “Come on.” Logan said, jumping out the car. “Shit, it's cold.”

“Logan, why did you drive us to Silverstone?” Oscar asked, pulling his zipper further up on his coat. “On the coldest day of the year? It might actually snow you know?”

“Come with me.” Logan stuck his hand out. Oscar just stared at him. Logan sighed, still holding out his hand. “Osc, I know it's been a confusing day. But please, if you love me, trust me for just a few more minutes.”

Oscar gave a tiny nod, gripping Logan's hand. “I trust you.”

Logan pulled him along, climbing over the wall onto the track. It was starting to snow gently, not really settling on the tarmac but making the grandstands look almost ethereal.

They walked in silence for a while, watching the snow fall around them. It wasn't until they hit Village that Logan started to speak, holding onto Oscar to stop himself from shaking.“Osc... Oscar.” He started quietly, waiting until his partner was looking at him. “There is a reason I've brought you all the way here, and it's hopefully a good one too.” He took a deep breath, steadying his other hand by putting it in his pocket, feeling the ring that was in there.

“I love you. I have done since we were kids in F4, with stupid haircuts and stupider ideas. I've loved you more and more each day, and I'm still not sure why you've decided to stick around but I hope I've made it worth it. And I want it to be forever. I want to see you race and beat everyone on track forever. I want to see you in the morning, still half asleep, forever. And I want to see you excited, and stressed, and sick, and ecstatic... I want you forever.” They were heading up the pit straight, almost at the finish line. “This was where we first won together, all those years ago. I knew then and I know now, that you were my start and finish Oscar.” Logan pulled them to a stop on the white line, finally looking at Oscar, before getting down on one knee, pulling the ring out of his pocket. “Oscar Piastri, will you marry me?”

“Get up.” Oscar tugged at him, “Logan, get up.”

“Oscar...” Logan's voice broke. Oscar couldn't really be saying no, could he?

“Lo... get up so I can so I can say yes and kiss you without getting wet knees.” Oscar grinned. “You fucking idiot, kneeling down in snow.”

Logan stumbled to his feet, Oscar's hands on his face before he was being kissed fiercely. “Yes.” Oscar breathed when they broke apart. “I would have said yes when we were sixteen, of course it's yes now.”

“I really thought you were about to say no.” Logan sounded hoarse to himself. “Thank fuck you didn't.”

“Dickhead.” Oscar laughed. “Who else do you think I'd ever get to propose to me?”

“Asshole.” Logan rested his forehead against Oscar's. “I'm totally going to bring it up all the time that you didn't say yes immediately because you didn't want wet knees.”

They had stayed at Silverstone as long as they could, until the snow picked up and they could barely feel their fingers. They'd raced back to the car, and left the track with a heartfelt thank you to Andy, who was still waiting there. They barely even made it to a main road before Oscar was calling his parents, smiling widely into the phone. From what Logan could hear, Nicole and Chris did a great job of sounding surprised – at least he didn't need to own up to accidentally asking them for their blessing.

“I don't know about you, but all I wanna do is have a scorching shower, and then we spend the rest of the afternoon in bed.” Oscar said as they pulled onto their street. “And you absolutely need to change your clothes.”

“Hmm.” Logan replied, waiting for Oscar to realise. There were several cars parked outside their house, just one space left for them on their drive. He saw Oscar frown from a side glance.

“Lo... why are there cars here?”

“So... you know how everyone has been kind of bailing on you?” Logan asked. “It's cause I wasn't sure what day Andy could let me in to Silverstone, and Alex overheard me making plans at testing, and then everyone kinda wanted to come and help?”

“What do you mean, help?”

“Originally they were gonna come down to the track too, but the weather looked shit and then a few of them couldn't fly over earlier.” Logan pulled into the drive, turning the car off. “I know you just said that you wanted to just go to bed -”

“Logan, I...” Oscar trailed off, looking for the right words. “They all wanted to help?”

“Yeah, they were pretty insistent.”

“It's... incredible, honestly.” Oscar started to tear up. “Fuck, sorry, I didn't mean to cry, I've just got the best boyfriend, and the best friends... shit you're my fiancée now? Scratch the boyfriend part -”

“Hey, Osc, it's okay.” Logan caught Oscar's hand in his, holding on tight. “Emotional day, right?”

“Yeah, emotional day."

“Do you wanna do this? We can go and get a hotel, right now.”

Oscar shook his head. “No, I want to go in. But, we are totally getting changed into trackies as well.”

Logan leaned over and gave Oscar a quick kiss. “Sounds perfect.”

As they got out of the car, he could see everyone inside hastily disappearing from their front window, ready for the supposed surprise. They kicked their shoes off inside, taking a second before opening the door to the front room, a stupidly painted banner hung across the room stating 'Congrats Loscar!!' as everyone cheered.

“Congrats Loscar?” Logan asked George a while later, raising an eyebrow.

“I admit, leaving Alex and Fred in charge of the banner probably wasn't the best idea we've ever had.” George apologised. “But it does kind of get the message across.”

As many of their friends were here that could be – George and Alex, Mark and Fernando, Charles and Pierre, Fred, even Lando, despite the loss of the championship only a few weeks ago. Although Oscar's usual opinion that parties like this were overrated, Logan had almost never seen him happier.

This was their home, their found family a thousand miles from where they had started.

Everything was perfect.

They sat outside on the grass leaning against each other, not caring if their suits got crinkled, despite Nicole's fussing. Eight months later they were married, matching rings on their fingers. They had gone back to the jewellery store Logan had gotten Oscar's at, and purchased a matching ring a few days after the proposal. Logan had tried to insist it wasn't necessary, but had just gotten a stare from his fiancée, and that was that argument finished with before it had even started.

“Do you think they're missing us in there?” Logan asked, looking inside to where their guests were still enjoying themselves.

“Nah, I think they've all drunk enough that they'll barely remember today.” Oscar replied. “I'm pretty sure I saw my Dad and Fernando trying to recreate Dirty Dancing.”

“Man, I want a video of that!” Logan laughed. “That's prime blackmail material right there.”

“I think Mae might have caught it.” Oscar said. “I'm sorry your family didn't come.”

“I'm not.” Logan shrugged. “Not today. Today, and every day now, you're my family Osc. And it feels more right to me than anything ever before.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Logan lay back on the grass, gazing up at the stars. “Thank you for marrying me Mr Piastri-Sargeant.”

“Thank you for asking, Mr Sargeant-Piastri.” Oscar lay down next to his husband. “Together until the finish.”

“Hopefully they invent robot bodies by then.”

“Nah, I draw the line at you in a robot body.” Oscar scrunched up his nose. “I'll definitely be going after someone younger, still with their actual body.”

“Asshole.”

“Dickhead.”

“Stuck with me now.” Logan teased. “What should we do with all that time then?”

“I can think of a few things.” Oscar pulled his husband towards him, closing the gap and kissing him tenderly. “We have all the time in the world.”
