Work Text:
It was a chilly Saturday night. Suo and Sakura bundled up under a blanket as they watched a random movie that they picked up from the school library. Two Months ago they challenged themselves to get through every single movie the library had to offer. Some were terrible, some hidden gems and others were just incredibly mediocre.
But none of that really even mattered. Neither Suo nor Sakura would consider themselves movie lovers. Because their ulterior motive is to simply have a reason to see each other every week. Of course they see each other every day at school, but that can’t compare to spending time alone with your partner.
Neither of the two have any experience when it comes to dating, so they’ve been taking it slow with their relationship. Suo knows that Sakura has a hard time with feelings and showing affection. On one hand he tries his hardest to respect that and to treasure him. But on the other hand he can’t help teasing the other boy. His boyfriend’s reactions are too endearing to him.
Sakura was surprisingly focused on the movie. It seemed like they had a lucky pick this time. It was an action movie from the 2000’s. The quality and story were pretty good. But Suo wasn’t really satisfied with that. Because now he lost his boyfriend’s attention because of it.
He took this opportunity to rest his head on Sakura’s shoulder. Usually he would’ve reacted already but his focus was really not where Suo wanted it to be. So he decided to up his game even further. He raised his head again and moved his face up to Sakura’s ear.
“Haruka.”
As soon as the whisper left Suo’s mouth Sakura jumped up.
“What the heck are you doing?!” he shouted to hide his embarrassment.
“What do you mean? I said your name, that’s all.” Suo said with his signature smile, acting obtuse on purpose.
While Suo’s answer wasn’t exactly wrong it got Sakura’s blood to boil. He knew he was messing with him.
“You know exactly what you’re doing.”
“But Sakura, we’ve been dating for over two months now and we have been friends for a while before that. Isn’t it about time we get on first name basis?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Sakura said almost too harshly. The truth was that he wanted to grow closer too. But he didn’t want to admit that since hearing Suo call out his name was too much for his heart to handle. “It’s hard to just switch now, okay?”
If it was anyone else in Suo’s shoes they might’ve gotten really upset with Sakura. But not Suo. He has come to know his boyfriend too well. And he knew backing up was not an option. It was time to play his trump card – getting pouty.
“But Sakura…i really want to hear you say my given name. Come on, just this once? It would make me really happy.” he put on his most convincing puppy eyes.
But Sakura didn’t want to give in so easily.
“Stop this! You’re doing this on purpose!”
“Is that a no?”
Suo was a tough opponent.
As much as Sakura tries his hardest to resist Suo’s never ending teasing, he always ends up falling victim to it. He knows that Suo is not actually malicious. But it’s hard for him to deal with this sort of affection since he hasn’t experienced it before. Sakura was used to people mistreating him, ridiculing him or looking at him with disgust. Transferring to Furin really changed his life in every aspect. He has grown closer to the people he met at Furin and started letting people in. But old habits die hard.
“Stop teasing me!” he shouted at Suo. But his red face was completely giving away his real emotions.
Before Sakura could realise what happened next, he felt his back meet the floor. Luckily his fall got cushioned by one of the pillows he got for his birthday. The Furin boys were flabbergasted when they found out he barely had anything in his apartment. So they used Sakura’s birthday as a perfect opportunity to spoil the boy. But back to the matter at hand – Suo flawlessly pinned him down, leaving him no room to escape.
“I’m not teasing you.” Suo retaliated. “I really want to hear you say it just once.”
Sakura’s heart rate shot up even further. He was close. Too close. He could faintly feel Suo’s breath meeting his face. He didn’t know where to look.
“Does it really matter? It’s just a name.” he said while trying his hardest to avoid Suo’s gaze.
“If it’s just a name then tell me. How did it make you feel earlier?”
Sakura said nothing.
“Didn’t it make your heart skip a beat?”
Suo took Sakura’s hand and guided it to his own chest. He wanted him to understand his feelings. However Sakura’s heart was beating so fast he could barely distinguish between his and Suo’s heartbeats.
“Please say it. Just once. I want you to feel it.”
It was over. He gave up. Sakura couldn’t take it anymore.
“H..H…” it was harder than he imagined. He stumbled all over his words. ‘It’s just a name’ he said mere seconds ago. Yet this felt like the hardest challenge he had in a while. This is why he didn’t want to do this. He was so embarrassed he could die.
“Hayato…” It took him a minute but he finally managed to say it. There was no turning back now. He decided to catch a glimpse at Suo’s reaction. But what he saw was not what he expected.
Normally Suo would be praising him and joking around. But what greeted his view instead was the Suo Hayato with a flustered expression he has never seen before.
This time he could feel it. He could feel Suo’s heart thumping against his fingers. For a moment he thought that the world around them has frozen.
Technically Sakura knew that Suo liked him. He tells him that at least 5 times a week. But seeing his feelings put on display for him like this made Sakura feel a way that couldn’t be put into words.
Before Sakura could say anything, Suo regained his smile.
“I’ve been telling you how serious i am about you all this time. Were you still not convinced?”
This was different. His expression shifted. This wasn’t Suo’s usual smile that was shrouded in mystery. His smile was gentle and warm.
“I love you, Haruka” he confessed.
It was so over for Sakura. His face was on fire. He has turned redder than a tomato.
This was the first time that Suo has used the word “love” to describe his feelings. He usually tells Sakura that he “likes” him or that he has feelings for him. He hasn’t been this blatant before.
Sakura had a very hard time thinking of how to respond to everything that just happened in the last few minutes.
“Suo, i…” Sakura started trying to form a response only to get interrupted by Suo.
“I wish you could see your face right now.” Suo teased him with a mischievous smile.
“Oh, screw off!” Sakura snapped and shoved one of his other pillows in Suo’s face.
Though it didn’t take very long for Suo to free his face from the pillow.
“Yep, i really do love you.”
Suo ignored the pillow between the two and gently embraced Sakura through it. They stayed like this for a while and Sakura was starting to calm down.
‘If only we could stay like this forever’ he thought. Feeling each other’s warmth, no unnecessary noise, just each other’s simple presence. This alone was enough for him to feel at peace. Sakura was so convinced that he wouldn’t need people. That he could do everything on his own. Of course that’s not what his heart wanted. But he had no other choice.
That was until he met the others – until he met Suo. He was really grateful for everything. If someone told him that he would meet so many wonderful people he would’ve simply laughed in their face. It felt like a ridiculous idea. But he was so very fortunate. He has found his own happiness.
He slowly started to doze off in Suo’s embrace.
“Suo.” Sakura mumbled.
“What is it?”
“I love you too.”
Suo was almost about to jump up in shock until he realised that the other boy fell asleep.
He quietly and carefully got up. Sakura was sleeping so peacefully it was almost impressive how fast he entered dreamland.
Suo gently moved Sakura’s bangs out of the way.
“That’s not fair. Tell me again when you’re awake.”
He gave him a soft kiss on the forehead and laid down next to him. Suo intertwined their fingers without waking the other boy and closed his eyes. It didn’t take long for him to drift off as well.
‘Screw the movie night, this was a hundred times better than any movie could be’ was the last thing on Suo’s mind before he fell asleep.
