“I want Papa!” Akiko cried, stubbornly.
Kakashi sighed. He gently pulled the hairbrush out of Akiko’s thick, silver strands, careful not to hurt her.
He turned her head to face him.
“I was the one who used to take care of Papa’s long hair for him, you know,” he said, sternly.
Akiko’s face scrunched up in confusion and she tilted her head to the side.
“Papa had long hair like mine?”
“Longer than yours, actually.”
Akiko gasped.
Kakashi hummed contentedly at the memory, eyes drifting from the little girl in front of him as he became lost in his thoughts.
“I used to wash it and brush it and even braid it for him sometimes.”
“Hmm…” Akiko processed this information aloud. “So if I let you do my hair, I’ll be just like Papa?”
Kakashi laughed. “Yes, that’s exactly my point.”
Her warm brown eyes too big for her face shone with determination. She turned to face forward once more.
“Daddy, I would like you to braid my hair like Papa’s,” she said matter-of-factly.
“You got it, pup.”
A little while later, the front door opened and Akiko raced toward the sound before Tenzo could make it through the doorway.
“Papa!” she shouted, throwing her arms around his waist.
Tenzo blinked in surprise when he noticed the delicate, silver braid in her hair. She only ever let Tenzo do her hair and even then, all he could manage was a somewhat messy ponytail before she ran off.
“Look at you!”
“Do you like it?” she asked, bashfully.
“Of course I do, it’s beautiful.”
“Daddy said he used to do your hair just like this, so I wanted to be like you!”
Tenzo blushed and looked up to see his husband smiling behind his mask, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
“Yes, that’s true he did.” Tenzo chuckled.
“Akiko, go play in your room so Papa can get ready. We’re going to grandpa’s for dinner tonight.”
“Oh, that’s right!” Tenzo exclaimed as Akiko sped off to her room.
“GRANDPA’S!!!” she shouted all the way down the hallway as her fathers laughed.
