Work Text:
He had gotten away from him again. He was so close.
“Jean Valjean,” he thought, his mind filled with hatred…and something…different.
He didn’t know what to do, so he took a deep breath and stepped out onto the roof.
“Somewhere out there,” he said, voice shaking “there is a fugitive running, but that fugitive is still, well, him. I wish he would just come with me, I’ve been chasing him for so long, but he always just seems to get away!” But maybe there was something inside of Javert keeping him from capturing Valjean.
“God” Javert called out, the rain streaking his face. “ God please help me. I won’t stop until me and Valjean meet face to face.” He prayed. Javert moved further onto the roof, till he was on the ledge. Putting one foot infront of the other, he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want to jump off in that moment, to let everything fade away, to let Javert fade away.
It wasn’t his fault that he was forced by the law to catch Valjean, though… maybe it was his fault that Valjean had reason to run.
“Stars” he whispered into the dark “stars…” he looked down. The stars were just like himself, he thought filling the darkness with order and light, sort of like sentinels of the dark night sky.
“Stars know their place in the sky, they keep order, always the same.” He looked down up to the sky “Be more like the stars, Javert” he whispered to himself.
He turned and started making his way back to the stairs from whence he came.
He paused “Jean Valjean” he said quietly, a slight smile gracing his face, his mind now filled with something else entirely.
