Work Text:
A loud beeping sound wakes the silent room.
Dick lets out a huff, agitated at the sound of answering another blaring call. He moves over to his small bedside table. There lies his phone, making that ear-blasting noise.
Annoyance quickly turns to happiness as he reads the caller ID.
‘Wally’ is calling..
Quickly, he picks up the phone - not wanting to make his best friend wait.
Dick and Wally have been friends forever, but to Grayson, Wallace was everything he ever needed. Someone who would help him, listen to him, respect him. Someone whom he could love even. But Dick knew he would never reciprocate these feelings. If only he liked him back, these weights would finally be lifted from his shoulders.
But for the safety of the friendship, his love remained hidden.
Nothing to interfere.
D: “Hey, what’s up?”
W: “I know this may sound out of the blue, but-”
Dick’s eyes bolted with curiosity. Was it good news or bad news?
D: “Yeah, I’m listenin’
W: “It’s been a while, but how does the idea of having another sleepover sound to you?
You know, like in the good times?”
A sleepover? Dick would gladly enjoy however long he had with his best friend, but a whole night together once again? He was elated.
D: “Gladly, you up for tomorrow?”
W: “Sounds great, Birdie. See ya later”
D: “Uh-huh, so long, Walls.”
And so it was settled, tomorrow he was going to spend time with his best friend - or should I say his love-bound crush.
It was a crisp winter’s afternoon. The day after the speedster called. Snow meddled with the whole atmosphere. Out the window, all you could see was a winter wonderland and the reflection of one fatigued hero.
Dick had already been snoozing off after his training. He was absolutely exhausted. Cold sweat ran down his face by the second - warmth quickly escaping from his organism.
He plumped himself on his disintegrating couch, launching his head back on the rim.
Eyes closing gradually, Dick drifted off by the second, well, till he heard a knock on his door.
Alerted, the ebony-haired man arose from his current position. Groaning in tiredness, he swung to his feet. Calling out to the person on the opposing side.
“I’m coming, give me a minute”, he enunciated.
Swiftly, the male fixed his inky hair, slapped on some slippers and headed for the door.
Outside, a friend of his was resting in the corridor. He wore a tainted shirt paired with a soft coat. West kept his hair slightly messy, I mean, how could he not when running at the speed of light?
Robin unlocked the door to see his best friend. There he was, as perfect as he could get.
There was a slight pause when he looked at the male. Wallace looked slightly different from how he remembered, but it was all worth seeing him again.
Oh, how he missed that annoying face. Those life-filled emerald eyes. That smile.
“You alright, Rob?” The ginger spoke
Dick snapped out of his trance, flushing red.
“Yeah, long time no see”
“Well, at least outside of the league.”
He leaned into a side hug with a sheepish smile. The prominent other gladly accepted the affection back.
-shortly after-
They rested lazily on the couch - not really engaging in much other than small talk.
Sitting awkwardly, the redhead decided to break the ice-cold silence.
“Well.. wanna do something? It’d be kind of lame not to do anything with you,” He chuckled
“Yeah, it would be lame, I’m already stuck with you”, Dick teased whilst daggering his
eyes.
“Aw, cmon, I’m tons of fun”, elbowing the other.
A rumble humidified the room, instantly turning the pale boy into a chilli pepper.
“Uh.. how about we bake something? How does that sound to you, KF?”
“Of course, your highness”, making a bowing gesture with his hand.
And so it was settled, they were going to cook something up, but what exactly?
Grayson resorted to using his late mother’s old cookbook written up in Romanian.
The Ginger leaned over the other's shoulder to view the book. He instantly buried his head into the smaller boy’s shoulder, discovering the language change.
“I’m assuming you’ll be translating?”
“Clearly, captain fucking obvious.” He joked.
“Alright.. uh, how about cupcakes?, You can’t possibly screw that up, right?”
“I hope not,” eyes darting in the direction of the cabinet.
“You sit back, I’ll get the equipment”
It’s just cupcakes, what could go wrong?
“I told you to add a teaspoon of vanilla extract!, Not the entire packet, idiot,” Robin shouted.
“Well, sorry, I can’t see anything because of all that flour in my eyes!” Kid Flash shot back in a sarcastic tone.
“Just mix in the chocolate chips already-”
Splat.
Right in the face.
Kid Flash took mixing too far with his superspeed.
“Oh no, you didn’t. Come here, you twat!” He spat.
The boy grabbed a spoonful of batter and splattered it over his mate's face.
The two then shoved playfully with each other, giggling in the process.
Wally tumbling onto Dick in the time..
A wave of blush rushed over Richard’s face. They were just inches apart.
But he couldn’t help but let out a laugh looking at the other's face.
“Sorry”, he said while giggling, helping the other by the hand.
Dick Grayson’s POV:
With the cupcakes finally being ready - despite the long, tedious process- I can finally clean myself up. It’s getting quite late anyway, might as well get changed into my nightwear.
I tell Wally, who’s already got himself dressed up, to wait while I take a shower.
I step into my cramped bathroom and undress out of my dirty clothes. Everything smelled like cherry blossom, and I forgot I had used an air freshener earlier. Ignoring the fragrance, I got myself to turn on the warm water.
As it was still winter, well, December to be exact, it was nothing but hot.
Thoroughly washing my body, I ease my mind. I let myself soak in the warmth until my mind is unclogged - even if it’s not the best for me physically.
I’m glad to be with Wally right now; he means the world to me. Dare I say my eyes are starting to fill with tears? This alone already made my skin crawl.
Cautiously getting out of the shower, I dry my wet torso. Tracing over my old cuts, I feel filthy, disgusting, so ugly. I’m sure. So once again, it was back to the long sleeves. Thanks to the climate, I doubt I’ll be questioned.
I leave my bathroom in my PJs and slippers; there, I see nothing but a ready-made bed.
“Wally, you still he-..”
I get knocked over to my carpet by something soft, like a pillow, almost.
Blatantly, I turn around and another wack meets my face.
“Pillow fight!” He screams
Gosh, and I’m supposed to be the immature one -typical Wally.
“You’re so on!” I exclaimed whilst grabbing the nearest cushion-like object.
We fought arm to arm like magnets for a good 3 minutes.
Still exhausted from earlier, I slump down on my bed.
He sits down beside me, offering to watch a film before shutting off to sleep.
We sit beside each other, staying in each other's warmth.
He chose a random film for us to watch whilst we dozed off.
I crept closer to him by the moment, but he didn’t seem to mind based on his looks.
Well, based on his looks, you can tell a lot of things. Like how his eyes glimmer, or how badly I would want to kiss those lips of his.
He sighed softly and turned to me, locking eye contact.
I instantly started tearing up for no apparent reason. Why was I so emotional constantly?
“Wallace West.” I look at him with glazed eyes.
“I-I..well I don’t know how to say this exactly bu-”
“What’s the matter? Is everything okay?” He asks, putting his hand on my shoulder.
“Wally, I know you’re my best friend, but-”
“I think I’m in love with you.”
Third person:
The ginger lifts his hands, cupping the Ebony’s face.
“I’m in love with you, too, Birdie”
A tear drips down the smaller boy’s face. He wraps his hands around the other.
Staying like that for a while, the other plants a kiss on his cheek.
Bound by friendship, they stay in love.
