Chapter Text
1. The Psychic
Y/n’s family back in Georgia were always full of surprises. A call from any of them always had a way of thickening the accent that slid through every word the younger woman uttered. And there was always some crazy adventurous tale that would follow. Today was no different and when Emily and JJ entered their shared home to their girlfriend laughing through the phrase, “Well, slap my face and call me Sally-” JJ and Emily’s eyes shone in amusement and they both made to put al their things away to join the younger woman in the kitchen. There was definitely going to be a story behind that call and something yummy to eat while they listened.
“Am I on speaker phone?” Y/n whispered as her eyes caught the movement in the arch of the kitchen. JJ rounded the kitchen island and made a beeline for Y/n’s side. Y/n wedged the phone between her ear and shoulder with a smile and allowed JJ to pull her in. “Good, you know I love Charlene with all my heart, but I don’t believe a thing Tovah says.”
Emily slid into a bar stool and reached for a bowl on the counter curiously. She met Y/n’s eyes with a raised brow. Y/n only shook her head with a wink and turned her attention back to the call. “I know y’all don’t know much about it, but there’s no way I’m pregnant right now. And I think Charlene knows that, hm?” That really got both agent’s attention, Emily choking on a carrot she’d stolen from the counter and JJ almost breaking her neck to look up. If Y/n noticed their shock, she didn’t show it and went back to her dinner prep and phone call with JJ’s arms hanging loosely at her waist. “Yeah yeah yeah, if that changes you’ll be hearing it from me and not Charlene’s psychic. No need to worry.”
Through the duration of their relationship, JJ and Emily had learned not to take any offense to being ignored when Y/n was talking on the phone. But it wasn’t often that they’d gotten such a shock from a one-sided conversation. Sure her folks in Georgia were colorful, but they all seemed to understand the basics of reproductive biology as well. They both eyed each other curiously as they listened to Y/n hum and ‘right’ her way through the rest of the call before bidding her family adieu and hanging up.
“Evening ladies, glad to see you’re home tonight and off risking your life across the country. How was work?” Y/n asked as she shifted the phone from her shoulder and turned her attention back to the vegetables on the table.
Both JJ and Emily remained silent, waiting for the younger woman to acknowledge their incredulous and curious looks. JJ, still having her arms wrapped loosely around Y/n, took the opportunity to pinch her hip. The younger woman grumbled in pain and finally looked to the blonde pointedly.
“What was that about?” JJ asked motioning to the phone laying against the counter.
“Just Charlene’s psychic planting seeds in everyone’s head.” Y/n shook her head in amusement.
“Charlene has a psychic?” JJ asked, reaching over Y’n’s arm to pop a carrot into her mouth. Emily groaned before JJ could distract Y/n from the actual line of questioning that mattered.
“Better question, why does her psychic think you’re pregnant?”
Y/n chuckled with another shrug, “I honestly just think it’s wishful thinking. Her psychic mentioned the letters DC and pregnancy. I’m the only one she knows living near DC so I was her first guess.” Y/n explained, leaning over the counter to pinch at Emily’s cheek. “No need to get your panties in a bunch, nobody’s dreaming of fish so we’re clear on that front.”
Emily rolled her eyes, “We’re also good because there’s literally no way for either of us to get you pregnant.”
“Also that.” Y/n agreed.
“Doesn’t mean I can’t try…” JJ grinned and squeezed at the younger woman.
2. Classroom Baby
JJ slid into the aisle of the auditorium, politely sliding between the rows of people already seated. Tonight was yet another of Y/n’s student recitals and she had the pleasure of being her date for the night. It’d initially been a planned trio outing with the promise of dinner and romance after, but Emily had been tagged for a last minute consult earlier in the day. So JJ and Y/n were going to make the most of their evening together. The lights of the auditorium dimmed pretty quickly as she took her seat and everyone in the room turned their eyes to the stage expectantly.
The room filled with applause as Y/n lurked through the darkness of the stage to the microphone in the center of the stage. When the spotlight found her, JJ was able to see her sweet smile addressing the crowd. “Good evening everybody, thank you so much for joining us tonight for our Senior recitals. These students have worked so hard this year on songs of their choice and this is one of their final steps before graduating out of this program.” The room applauded in praise, a few names sprinkled in— sure to embarrass their loved ones. Once the room seemed to settled again, Y/n continued her explanation before promising to be back between students. “Without further ado, thank you and enjoy.”
Y/n disappeared back stage and JJ settled in for an evening of young adult singing. Jazz, musical theatre, and some classical. They weren’t her ideal genres of music but over the course of her relationship with Y/n, she’d learn to appreciate the work that went into performing them all. Plus, her super hot professor girlfriend was going to be floating in and out of the spotlight for the rest of the night to keep her engaged. She could handle this, no problem at all.
JJ traced the songs listed on the program closely, waiting (patiently) for the set to be over. She’d enjoyed the first few lively songs but once the student’s repertoire took a darker turn, she was itching for a distraction. As the guy held his final note, she sighed in relief as she clapped him off the stage and waited for Y/n to come back to stage. She’d helped the younger woman decide on a dress the night before and it’d been a true shame that the first time she was seeing it on was in a room full of strangers but that really wasn’t hindering her enjoyment too much. JJ slid to the edge of her seat in anticipation, eyes trained on the stage door, unconsciously or consciously ensuring she missed nothing.
Because her eyes were so trained on the door, she couldn’t really miss the baby wrapped around Y/n’s hip. Fists balled in the neckline of her dress and head resting on her shoulder. Completely at ease against the woman, even with the room full of people gazing at her. Round cheeks smushed and tear stained heated a little as the crowd fawned over her. Y/n smiled and squeezed her a little. Y/n seemed completely unbothered by the new addition to her evening, she spoke smoothly, corralling the audience between every set and moving the recital along. And JJ loved every minute of it. By the end of the recital, the blonde found her mind drifting to mini Y/ns twirling and screaming in the name of entertaining.
A passive thought, yes. But only intensified backstage after the recital. Watching the two up close. JJ walked up from the hall, making a beeline for Y/n’s back as she spoke to a group of students. She smoothed her hand around her waist with a smile and found herself face to face with that fantasy.
“Hi,” JJ smiled, brows raised as she let her eyes shift from her girlfriend’s to the eyes baby in amusement. “Who’s your friend?”
Y/n’s face brightened as she turned to switch the baby to the hip closest to JJ. “Hi sugar, this is Lila and her mom and my now, former student, Jodie.” Y/n tickled at the little girls belly and grinned when she got a totally infectious giggle in response while JJ smiled in greeting. “Jodie, this is my partner JJ.”
“Nice to meet you, your daughter is beautiful and you did a wonderful job tonight.” JJ complimented before turning back to Y/n. “I was so confused when you came back on stage with a baby clinging so comfortably to you. But that’s not the craziest thing to happen with you, so I wasn’t too worried.”
“Oh yeah, Lila and I are thick as thieves. She was my teaching assistant this year. “ Y/n grinned, nuzzling her nose into Lila’s hair.
Jodie giggled and nodded along, “Professor Y/Ln saved me this year. My usual childcare fell through right before the school year started but she was so cool about me bringing Lila to class.” JJ felt her body warm at the words and she couldn’t really take her eyes off Y/n.
Another student piped up with a story of Y/n holding Lila through a final because she’d feeling extra fussy that day. Or another story about her letting Lila pick random keys on the piano and using them to teach the class. Or the one that really got to JJ, her spending the class rocking a sick Lila in and out of sleep while Jodie took a breather.
“I’m gonna miss my little cuddle bug next year!” Y/n whined a bit before kissing all over Lila’s face softly.
“I think she might miss you more. Come on Lila, say bye bye so we can go home.” Jodie smiled wistfully and reach her hands out to take Lila back. Lila hesitated a bit but then lifted her head from Y/n’s chest and laid a sloppy wet kiss on her cheek before falling into her mother’s arms.
Everyone awed quietly as Y/n put her hand over her heart. She leaned into JJ easily with a smile as she waved at the baby. Right before everyone parted ways, one of the students in the group smiled and called, “Professor Y/ln, you’re gonna make such a good mom one day.”
And JJ couldn’t help but to smile over Y/n’s shoulder in agreement. She sure would.
3. Momily ?
Y/n didn’t come to Quantico often. Especially not during the work day. But when Garcia calls, you answer and you follow directions. The sun was high in the air and the heat was thick for a Virginia summer but as soon as she walked through the doors of the Bureau office— she felt the power of government building air conditioning at work. At least she knew her girlfriends weren’t out somewhere sweating all the water out of their bodies and collapsing from dehydration. The FBI might let them die (or fake their death) in other situations but not from dehydration in the middle of the hottest summer they’d seen in years.
She followed Garcia’s directions to a T— and was easily given a visitors badge and direction to the BAU bullpen. On her shoulder was the requested outfit change for Emily and as soon as the elevator doors opened she was able to see why they were necessary. There through the glass doors of the bullpen stood Emily with a child koala-ing her back while she leant over a desk in concentration. The rest of the team and other agents didn’t even bat an eye at the scene which led Y/n to believe this might’ve been going on for most of the day. Her girlfriends had been working since yesterday on a case in town, so she hadn’t seen them in days but they’d texted or called when they could to let her know. Any call or text she received was only an update on themselves but they kept almost all of their active case details pretty tightlipped.
She headed for the bullpen curiously, eyes scanning her surroundings looking for Penelope or maybe JJ to hand things off to. Not wanting to interrupt, but all she could see was Emily working around a toddler. She slipped through the doors pretty much unnoticed and watched her girlfriend move quietly. She hadn’t really thought much about it but of her two girlfriends she’d wondered who’d be the most maternal. JJ already had that draw to care for— whether that be emotional, or physically. She showed that side of herself much more freely. Then there was Emily, the protector. Caring, yes but in a much more physically demanding way. Her arm shot out over Y/n’s chest when she had to brake abruptly. She ensured she walked on the outside of the sidewalk at all times. She’d sift through a burning building for JJ if it came down to it. She was and always would be a protector. And right now, that energy seemed to be extending past their team and onto this tiny tiny human. And that too maternal. And extremely sexy.
Her view was blocked by a charcoal suit and tie. Senses drowned in cheap cologne. She tried not to let the discomfort show on her face as she let her eyes drift up to the man’s but when she caught sight of his smirk she wasn’t sure she cared all that much. “Hi, there. Are you lost? Need some help finding your way to the lobby?”
Mustering every last manner instilled in her body, Y/n smiled sweetly and shook her head. “No, I’m fine. Thank you for asking.” She moved to side step around him, but man only moved with her. Hands hovering in front of her body, his smirk broadened. “Are you sure? I think I’d remember you if you worked here. I’m more than happy to escort you anywhere you need to be-”
“Brad, aren’t there files you should be organizing somewhere?” Emily’s cool voice wrapped around both Y/n and the suit. His eyes widened comically in fear and he looked to be forming an explanation, but Emily cut him off again with a glare and measured footsteps. “Somewhere not in here, harassing women who very clearly don’t need your help.” His cheeks flared in embarrassment and he scurried out of the glass doors not even meeting Y/n’s eyes again.
With the suit gone and her path clear, Emily stood in all her protective glory with a button nosed cutie propped on one hip. And Y/n melted. It was the only logical reaction to such a heroic little display of dominance. Add in the Doodlebug peaking through her hair— cuteness overload. “Well Hi, Sugar. I see you got your hands full today.”
Emily grinned and turned her head to look the kid in the eye before nodding her head with a sigh, “You can say that again. What are you doing here?”
“Garcia summoned me with a change of clothes for you. I was given very little instruction other than that.” Y/n gestured to the bag on her shoulder with a shrug and arched an eyebrow toward Emily’s shoulder. “Who’s your friend?”
Emily smiled softly and ran a hand over the child’s head, “This is Malaki.” Y/n watched as the boy looked between them both cautiously. His fists tightening fractionally in Emily’s blouse (which Y/n could now see was caked in something green and brown). “We’ve been hanging out today, haven’t we?” The boy nodded silently, and tucked himself tighter against Emily’s chest. Emily for all that she’d been raised in, didn’t even flinch. She locked her arms under his legs and tucked him under her chin as if it were second nature. And obviously it was. She was maternal, the strong kind. And it was damn attractive.
4. Hidden Desires (aka the one time they discussed it)
“So are we going to talk about last night or…” Y/n asked curiously, as she sipped at whatever sugary iced coffee Emily had brought back this morning. It was Saturday and they were all sitting around the dining room table nursing caffeinated drinks and splitting headaches. Some more than others. JJ for instance, hadn’t lifted her head from the table since Emily had called them down for their liquid breakfast. A night out with Garcia tended to do this to them. That technical analyst could turn water to wine. And she was just so persuasive. By the time they were all winding down and ready to head home, Emily’s restraint worked in the trio’s favor and she was able to get them all home in one piece. But not before Garcia had roped them into a game of truth or dare.
“Do we have to?” JJ whined behind her arms, trying desperately to block the sun from her eyes.
“Dare, Garcia. Give me a good one.” JJ had decided finally pulling herself from the expanse of Y/n’s neck that she had been nibbling at for half of the night. It was a pretty typical pipeline for the blonde, Y/n was much more willing to let her run her tongue across the skin than Emily was. (You give a girl one hickey and it’s no above the neck action for months).
“I dare you to share one of your most hidden or secret desires with the room.” Trust Garcia to use this opportunity to gather information.
“I’m pretty sure between the two of us, we know all her hidden desires. Ain’t that right, Pumpkin?” Y/n grinned, eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Pumpkin? Really? Nope.” Emily shook her head with a pointed look at the younger woman.
“Wait, I like Pumpkin. That’s so you! You’re so fall and autumn coded.” Garcia clapped in excitement.
Emily groaned and shook her head, pointing her finger toward JJ who had taken the lapse of attention as an opportunity to nuzzle back into Y/n’s side. “We’re supposed to be discussing Jen’s deepest darkest desires right now. Let’s focus up team.”
With all the attention back on her, JJ sighed before speaking as openly and honestly as possible. “I want a baby.”
She wasn’t sure if she’d always felt that way or if it was something every woman experienced in their adulthood but it was true. She wanted a baby. With these women. And she’d said it as a dare, drunk, in her best friend’s living room. Something she’d been holding on to for months. And now in the light of day, without the aid of alcohol, she was going to say it again. “I want a baby. With the two of you. I want to have a family with the two of you.” She’d said it all, head in her hands, shoulder tense. But as soon as the words left her mouth, she felt lighter. Freer. And she knew that these were her people, no matter what. “I know it might seem sudden. Me, we’ve talked kids separately before but with the job, it just never made sense. But then something changed. We changed. Our priorities shifted and things started feeling more possible.” She sat back in her chair and turned to face Y/n, “Then I’m in the audience of a college auditorium watching a baby gaze up at you with the purest form of adoration I’ve ever experienced. All because you’re you. And who wouldn’t want more you in the world. It’s been on my mind and I know it’s sudden but I’m glad you both know now.”
The kitchen seemed to take a breath at the outburst, leaving JJ weightless and a bit anxious. But the quiet didn’t last long before Y/n spoke. “Listen honey, I’ve always wanted kids. It’s never really been a question for me. But I always just assumed you two had ruled it out since we never really discussed it. I mean with your jobs alone, I could see why it hadn’t seemed possible. But if you feel like something has changed, I’m not going to block a blessing when I see one.”
“She’s right, something has changed. It started as soon as you moved to this little cul-de-sac. We started prioritizing things other than the job.” Emily agreed.
“It was a concerted effort in our pursuit of you. We wanted to make it work. And I feel that way about a family. It’s something I want and am willing to work for.” JJ nodded, eyes locked on Emily’s willing her to speak her mind, openly and honestly.
“Let me just say this first. I am not opposed to a baby, far from it. I think I want nothing more to have this experience with two women I love more than life. But I worry.” Emily sighed.
“About everything, yes we know. What’s got you worried about this specifically though?” Y/n asked with a teasing smile. Hoping to lighten the load Emily seemed to be carrying alone.
“You both know my mother. You know how I was raised. What if I’m not cut out for motherhood? What if there’s not a maternal bone in my body?”
JJ looked as if she was going to jump in, but Y/n placed a hand on her thigh stopping her. “You know you’re not as hard to figure out now as you were when we first met. And everyday I’m so thankful for you allowing me to know and love you the way that you do. In knowing and love you, I’ve been able to experience sides of you that I don’t even think you realize exist.” Y/n reached for Emily’s hand with the sweetest smile. “You are not your mother. You’ve proven that in more ways than I can count. But more importantly, you are maternal. I’ve seen it with my own eyes and felt it in my heart. You’re sweet as puddin when you wanna be. Attentive in everything you do. You’re protective over the ones you love. And you love harder than anyone I know. And I think that’s all a child really needs in this world. People who care.” She pulled Emily’s hand to her lips and kissed her knuckles chastely and patted her hand. “Not trying to sap you into it, because if you don’t want it that’s A-Ok. But I don’t want you to let your upbringing talk you out of something you want. Plus, Motherhood is different for everybody, siblings living in the same house aren’t even raised by the same parents. Not only do I think our kid would be the cutest kid to ever exist, but I also think they’d have the best mothers to ever exist too.”
Emily and JJ couldn’t stop the laughs from bubbling out of their chest as their girlfriend grin in triumph at them. She really had a way of putting things into perspective and then giving herself a compliment.
“I guess you’re right…” Emily agreed, smile spreading across her face to match both JJ and Y/n’s.
“Wait, are you both sure about this? This is a huge decision and we all need to be sure. I don’t want you just saying yes because you know I want it and this one over here is oh so persuasive.” JJ asked, fighting her excitement.
“When have I ever done anything I didn’t want to? I think you were both born to be mothers, I’d be honored to help make that happen.” Y/n smiled, pulling JJ into her side with a kiss. They both looked to Emily with baited breath, needing the confirmation to fully celebrate.
Emily wasted no time coming to lean into the embrace of her loves. A kiss to both of their lips and a knowing smile. “It looks like we’re having a baby, then.”
The celebration was instant. Kisses, hugs, a couple of excited squeals from the younger of the trio. But all of it was a manifestation of their love and their growing family as a whole. They migrated to the couch in their bliss and snuggled close under a blanket while discussing idle dreams for their future as a family. Until Y/n shot up as if only just remembering something. “Do you really not like Pumpkin? I think it’s adorable.” Y/n pouted over at Emily. The older woman sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Can we make it a seasonal thing, like October to November?” Emily negotiated, half-heartedly knowing full well, Y/n was gonna call her whatever she wanted. And despite all the fuss from the night before, she loved it.
“How about August to August.” Y/n suggested with a grin.
Emily went to grumble a reply but JJ cut her off with a grin of her own, “Stop arguing with the future mother of our child.”
“Oh, I can’t wait to use that.” Y/n clapped in excitment. “The mother of your child. The woman carrying your baby. Your baby mama, if you will.”
“Oh brother,” Emily rolled her eyes poking into the younger woman’s side. “Let’s just settle for an occasional Pumpkin and a baby. That sound fair for now?”
“For now.” Y/n smiled. They all went quiet for a second. Basking in their new plans and their love for each other. Until JJ broke the silence.
“Anyone wanna practice making the baby?” Her eyebrows wiggled suggestively.
Biologically impossible, but STILL worth a try.
