Wings of Fire is set in a (roughly) Medieval-ish period, so it's not like they have any video games to get stuck in. Here, the characters are probably there…pseudo-voluntarily. They have fallen on hard times, feeling a little bit like outcasts, and are hoping to get some work in ways that are less than legal.
They aren’t doing anything evil, of course! They are actually helping out! They can investigate reports that no one else has taken seriously, like those rumors of a secret animus in the old NightWing kingdom, even though animus magic doesn’t even work anymore. Or a problem needs to be covered up quietly, so as not to make a Princess look foolish for trusting the wrong trio of RainWings to guard the latest in LeafWing medical innovation. And if no one else will do it, why wouldn’t they deliver a crate of poison dart frogs from the RainWing kingdom right to the Scorpion Den? And really, it's not their business why anyone would need all that poison anyways…
In the Wings of Fire Universe, our cast is a cheap and clumsy underground contact made up of outcasts in need of a place to call home. The “Circus” is set on a remote island somewhere between Pyrrhia and Pantala. They are occasionally sent on some pretty dangerous work, and it’s happened more than once that things have gotten out of hand…But hey, they are all stuck in this together at the end of the day! Like a family, according to Cane! A mismatched, dysfunctional, only slightly toxic family!
