After Aemond attacked Lord Lucerys and nearly killed the boy, the Targaryen's realised how much this war will cost them and the harm it would cause the Realm so, without the knowledge of the Queen Mother Alicent Hightower and the Lord Hand Otto Hightower, Aegon the Elder let go of the throne and swore fealty to his elder sister, Rhaenyra, crowning her the first Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms. The Hightowers were punished for their treasons by being put to the sword while Aemond was stripped of his birth titles and claim to the throne but through threats towards Larys Strong and a marriage to Simon Strong's bastard daughter, Alys, Aemond legitimised his wife, forced Lord Strong to name her heir over Larys, and became the Lord of Harrenhall.
In this new era, the Targaryen's thrived and new bonds were formed. Princess Helaena and Lady Rhaena became fast friends with Rhaena helping Helaena with her visions and Helaena often taking Rhaena flying on Dreamfyre, believing the dragon fond of Lady Rhaena due to her namesake being Dreamfyre's first rider, Rhaena Targaryen, Queen in the West and East. It is also said that Morning was hatched from one of Dreamfyre's eggs which only solidified the women's bond more. After relinquishing the Iron Throne, Aegon the Elder strived to repair the relationships he used to have with his eldest nephews, Prince Jacaerys and Lord Lucerys, as well as vying to marry his daughter Jaehaera to Aegon the Younger, which succeeded, and his son Maelor to Vaella, which failed but there were no issues afterward.
Shortly after the death of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon Targaryen, the Queen who Never was, and Lucerys Velaryon inherited the seat of Driftmark, his youngest brother Prince Viserys designed and built a new kind of dragon saddle which allowed Lucerys to ride Arrax again. The Lord of the Tides repayed this debt by sponsoring Viserys and sending him to Oldtown to learn to become a Maester at the Citadel. Viserys specialised in Higher Mysteries and often spent whole nights awake studying Old Valyria, magic, and even secretly dragons.
