Work Text:
Blind spots were something that no one in the anbu wished to address when they wore these masks. Usually they were able to power through it and work on heightening their other senses when their sight was obstructed in any way by their masks they wore to keep identities hidden.
Anbu always had to be aware and ready for any form of attack coming at them even if they were incapacitated. They either adapted to their situation or they were a liability.
They couldn’t afford liabilities.
Kakashi rarely had his guard down for anything or anyone; even when he was not on duty he always walked with the air of someone who was not to be messed with. Those who have tried usually ended up with a kunai at their throat, or a substitution jutsu that boggled them.
However, if there was one person able to catch him off guard it was Tenzo.
Perhaps it was from working so closely with him after leaving the foundation. Or perhaps he just seemed to have a knack for catching the white haired jonin off guard at just the right moment. To Kakashi though it was more of a game to see how many times the other could get him in his blind spot before he could catch him.
Today the Hound was going on a walk through the woods, attempting to find some serenity after a long mission with one of their newest members to the Anbu Black Ops. Despite being a child prodigy, it almost concerned Kakashi just how detached the Uchiha kid was about his job. Even when he joined the Anbu at first, Kakashi had to harden himself to what was asked of him.
He sighed quietly, continuing down the familiar path in hopes to clear his mind–
The poor guy jumped when he felt a soft blow against his ear; causing him to yell and snap around to see who was the culprit, kunai out. Instead he was met by leaves fluttering down from the trees as he looked back and forth. Kakashi takes a slow breath and slowly lowers the kunai with narrowed eyes.
“...Tenzo?” he called out.
Another soft gust of air against his ear has him whipping back around only to be faced with the same sight of leaves fluttering around that has him squinting his eyes. This time there’s a very quiet snicker from overhead where the leaves were thickest.
“Tenzo.”
He jumped again when he felt a little take to the nape of his neck. He almost managed to catch sight of the one doing this, however he can’t get the full scope of the other. However he knew of only one person able to get him in his blind spot.
No matter how many times he tries to be ready, somehow Tenzo manages to get him right at the ear or the back of his neck.
A yelp leaves Kakashi when there’s a slight peck against his neck now and it sends shivers through his spine and shoulders as the hair on his head stood up.
“Tenzo!!” the white haired Anbu officer snapped around again and this time he was met with a snicker from the tree branches. Oh when he found the wood style user, he was going to really give it to him!
However he shouted when this time the poke came from the ground to his ankle making him jump again while waving the kunai down, “Hey hey hey!”
“Seems you’re getting a little out of your element there senpai,” Tenzo’s voice teased though it was a little hard to pinpoint as Kakashi looked around. Honestly, how did someone who once used to be so loyal to Danzo become so playful with someone who was once his target?
Kakashi didn’t know, but he was grateful that Tenzo was able to be playful and open up to him at least. He sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck, wondering if he should start training again to heighten his senses. It would certainly help. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“You must be terribly bored to be picking on your senpai, my kouhai,” he snorted as his sharingan scanned around to see if he could somehow spot the other’s hiding spot. He shouldn’t be surprised he couldn’t as with the mokuton, Tenzo could definitely shield his natural chakra signature with that of the trees here that were planted by Lord First.
Kakashi turned around then–
“I prefer to call it playing with my senpai, if I’m honest,” Tenzo smiled at him softly, now upside down as he faces him fully; no mask and his hair trimmed against like when he was younger. He chuckled when Kakashi stumbled slightly before a sigh left the anbu officer well known amongst the ranks as Hound.
Immediately, Hatake tries to collect himself as he puts his hands together and gives Tenzo a stern look, “You should really refrain from doing stuff like this when people least expect it. Not all of them would be able to stop in time from stabbing you in the throat.”
“Oh don’t worry, I know your blind spots best and how you react best,” Tenzo chuckled as he then went back into the leaves before he jumped down with a smile, "You need to learn to have some fun outside of work, senpai.”
“I would if your idea of fun wasn’t to spook me,” Kakashi scolded, however there was no real venom in his voice. Instead he reached up and lightly poked the younger man in the forehead. Even if he tended to act annoyed, he actually did enjoy this little game they had like this.
It made him feel like a kid for a moment, like when things were good, when his father was alive and would play hide and seek with him.
Tenzo was still smiling even as Kakashi gave him a bit of a noogie as the forest soon became filled with the sound of laughter.
