Neru was on our couch doomscrolling. We could hear her nails tapping her phone as she was going through different videos, until she stopped.
“This guy! It hasn’t been even 24 hours since we broke up, and he now has a new girl on his story?! What a pig!” She angrily yelled as she threw the phone beside her on the couch.
I stared at her in confusion and pity.
She’s a colleague and friend of Teto, my roommate.
She came in crying and yelling at our door last night and Teto begged me to let her stay for the time being until she gets herself together.
Sounds like she’s going through a rough patch.
“You deserve better, I’m sure a nice girl like you will find a caring and loving boyfriend someday!” I smiled trying to reassure her.
“Says the girl who already has man! It’s easy for you to say!”
It’s true, I’ve been with my boyfriend for about a year now. We haven’t moved in together yet for two reasons.
The main one being that Teto needed a roommate to afford rent and she begged me to live with her; I couldn’t tell her no.
And the second reason being, it felt like things were moving too fast with my boyfriend and I didn’t like it. So we just… slowed down a bit!
“I mean… Everything isn’t sunshine and rainbows all the time but yeah, I understand your discontentment ..”
She rolled her eyes at me and got back on her phone putting My Chemical Romance music at full blast.
She sang along with anger, it made me feel unwelcomed in my own home.
I wanted to tell her to tune it down a little, but I didn’t know how to bring it up without stirring the fire.
I was about to ask Teto to do something about this but before I could do so, her bedroom door swung open.
“Here I am to save the day!” She exclaimed snarkily.
I couldn’t believe it… She had a cat ears headband, a completely furry body suit, a superhero cape and she had drawn whiskers and a triangle nose on her face.
I was speechless.
“Uhm… If you don’t mind me asking.. What are you doing?”
“Cheering my friend up, obviously! Neru, come here, let’s snuggle!” She exclaimed proudly with a smug on her face as she jumped on the couch Neru was sitting on.
Neru looked up from her phone staring at the red headed furry that just spawned in front of her with such nonchalance it was a bit scary.
“Nah thanks, I’m more of a dog person.”
Teto pouted and replied with a cheeky, “Well… You’re missing out!”
As she walked away back into her room in defeat I was about to reach out until Neru interrupted loudly,
“Teto, can I live here as a third roommate? I have nowhere to go since my boyfriend dumped me and every one of my friends live with their significant other. And… you know… I don’t wanna third wheel, ew.”
I’m surprised how casually she asked that. Not even looking at me or Teto, not batting an eye, no pleading; it was as if she asked for a glass of water or something.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure she’s nice and all, but having a third roommate is still a huge decision, we should talk about it first-
“I’m glad you asked!! Of course Neruwu, we’re going to have so much fun! I can’t wait!” Teto spinned around as if dancing her way to the couch to finally jump and land in her laps.
How come I wasn’t even consulted for this?
I mean, even if I was, it’s not like I could say no anymore.
“To celebrate, let’s make leek soup! I’ll make sure to accompany it with fresh bread for dipping! That would be perfect! Right Miku?” Teto turned to me beaming with excitement.
Leek soup and bread is our go to meal to honour our good days. It’s really comforting for the both of us and it brings us joy everytime.
I’m not sure today was necessarily quite the event that would warrant our tradition, but if it made Teto happy; sure, why not!
But Neru seemed to think otherwise, “Ew? Leeks? No thanks, let’s just get McDonald’s.”
Well… I guess our little tradition won’t last for much longer.
