Work Text:
The practice match was like usual, though if you were to ask Hinata which team he was playing, he couldn’t tell you.
But that wasn’t important, no. They were winning! At least, he thought so? The score board was hard to read.
Nishinoya had just received a hard serve and the ball made it to Kageyama. Tanaka jumped to spike and so did Hinata but he stopped his approach just as he reached the net. Odd.
Before he knew it, he was back in position. The opposing team served again, had they scored? Never mind.
Daichi got to it and Hinata could swear he heard his name somewhere. Didn’t matter. Because now it was his turn, he would spike!
The ball was still in the air when Hinata made his approach. One foot in front of the other, he felt unusually light, but that should be a good sign!
A few steps before the net, jump!
But he didn’t jump. He forgot how to.
Frantically, Hinata searched around the room. Kageyama stood by the net, he was sure it was Kageyama. And the match, it was about to begin!
Hinata stepped back but he couldn’t move forward again. He tried to jump but nothing happened.
Whipping his head around, he heard Coach Ukai. „Now!“
Hinata looked around his team. He had done this before, he knew he knew what to do, how receives worked and blocking was fresh in his mind. But what was his job?
He ran forward, he ran to the side and Kageyama set the ball but Hinata couldn’t remember. He wracked his brain for anything, he must‘ve done this before! Something, something, he knew it!
Jumping! Right! Spiking, that‘s it! But how did that work?
Distress filled Hinata. This was his moment, the match, he had to jump and spike. But he couldn’t. For the life of him, and it felt like this would be the death of him, he couldn’t remember what it was like to jump, the jumps he must‘ve done before. At some point during practice, right?
He looked around the court again. Someone, ANYONE!!! Someone must be able to show him how to jump!
„HINATA!“
„Jump!“ Hinata woke with a start. „Huh?“
„Dumbass, training camp! Get you‘re ass up, you over slept!“
For some reason, Kageyama‘s yelling was comforting.
It was a dream. Just a bad, terrifying dream. He still knew how to jump. He still knew how to spike.
Kageyama rolled his eyes and left.
„Uh- HEY! Wait up! You‘re not getting to breakfast before me!!“
