Peeping Tom

Summary:

Enid reaches for the door handle and suddenly notices a black hair tie hanging from it

Work Text:

Enid hums to herself as she easily climbs the stairs to her attic. She thinks about her history grade and how the curl that has fallen across Bruno's forehead makes him look like Johnny Depp in Cry-Baby.

Enid reaches for the door handle and suddenly notices a black hair tie hanging from it. She jerks her hand away as if she's been burned. She stares at the hair tie for a few seconds, trying to figure out what it could mean. Of course, she had explained to Wednesday what it meant. But still. First, the hair tie is too big, even though it's black. Wednesday uses small elastic rings to secure the ends of her braids. Second, she had made it clear that she disapproved of Enid bringing Bruno into their shared bedroom, and she would hardly do the same. Third and most importantly, when did Wednesday Addams get a boyfriend, and why didn't Enid Sinclair know about it?

Curiosity rises in her chest and spreads across her shoulders like goosebumps. It begins to burn at her fingertips. She could pay Wednesday back in kind. She could pretend not to notice the hair tie wrapped around the door handle, walk in, and find out who her secret boyfriend is. Then, looking surprised and confused, she could leave immediately.

Enid hesitates. She tells herself it's none of her business. She says that Wednesday will tell her when she's ready. She says she doesn't want to be like the psychopathic Agnes. That last thought makes Enid wince.

Arguments of reason prevail, and Enid turns back to the stairs. But at the top step the same feeling descends upon her that must have made Peeping Tom peek through the crack in the shutters when Lady Godiva rode down his street.

Enid goes back, takes a deep breath, and opens the door.

The first thing she notices is how messy the room is. Her rattan chair is upside down, and Wednesday's cello is on its side. Sheets of paper are scattered about, and Enid's clothes and toys are strewn across the floor. Some of the toys have their bellies ripped open, as if they had been used as a shield against a man with a knife.

In the middle of the chaos on the floor are two people. Tyler, whom Enid recognizes with a flash of fear, is lying on the floor. Wednesday straddles her enemy and bends down to kiss him fiercely, as if she were going to suck his soul out of his mouth. Tyler's broad palm is on her thigh, squeezing and crumpling the fabric of her heavy uniform skirt.

None of them look at her. Enid stands frozen, as if under the gaze of a Gorgon's snakes. Then, someone grabs her wrist and pulls her toward the exit. It's Agnes, the redheaded sycophant, who leads her out into the hallway and closes the door.

"Did you put the hair tie there?" Enid guesses.

"Yeah," she nods. "But I thought they were going to kill each other, and I didn't want them to be interrupted."

Agnes's eyes look confused and disappointed. It's as if Wednesday Addams has just fallen off the pedestal on which she was placed. Enid glances at the closed door and sighs.

"Come on," she says, softening her attitude toward the girl. “Let’s go have some cocoa. It's going to take a while for these two to sort things out."
