Heart of the Cards

Summary:

After making their move to Vancouver, Sophie and Claire face their uncertainty.

Notes:

Prompt:

Defense Pair - Fate

This is based on the time I asked my tarot deck if Sophie Jaques was gonna get expansion drafted and I drew this exact card in reverse, and I immediately thought of making a fic out of it. I started writing this right after Jaques and Thompson signed with Vancouver, and finally finished it for this challenge!

Work Text:

It had been a long season - too long. Between it having been her first full season with the Frost and going to the playoffs again, Sophie was about at her wit's end with the team. She and Claire had luckily managed to stay off of the captain's - and by extension the coach's - radars for most of the season, not that it was hard. Their space in the team hierarchy as defenders was forgettable to the higher rungs, and they preferred it that way. It only made it that much easier to get out while they could. The Frost invariably chose to protect a handful of forwards and the following day, Sophie and Claire were off, so to speak; signing their careers away to the burgeoning Vancouver team as they prepared for their move across the continent. By summer's end, they had their lives boxed up and sent to Vancouver, a chill of apprehensiveness in spite of their seemingly endless resolve.

They sit facing each other on the floor of their new apartment, a moving box with two plastic cups of wine atop it between them. Claire shuffles a deck of cards in her hands.

"So, what did you wanna ask it?"

Sophie looks over at Claire from where her gaze had been lingering on an empty wall. What had she intended to ask? It had certainly been a headache trying to find Claire's tarot cards in the chaos of move-in day, but once Sophie had mentioned getting them out, Claire insisted upon opening every box to find them. Sophie was sure she had come up with a question during the search, hadn't she? It was hard to remember, with the fog of uncertainty that had been hanging over her since the beginning of the summer. She was so sure about it then, why was she having second doubts now? Just as Sophie opens her mouth to improvise an answer, a card jumps out of the thoroughly-shuffled deck in Claire's hands and lands on the box facedown between them. Both look down at the card, then back up at each other, Sophie's mouth still hanging slightly ajar.

"Well," Claire starts. "You know that if a card falls out of the deck while shuffling, you should take a look at it." She looks back up expectantly at Sophie, her eyes down on the loose card. She feels her hand move towards the card, picking it up off the box and flipping it over.

The seven of wands, a card of resilience, conviction, and defense. The wands are all cards signaling initiative and reinvention, but the seven of wands signifies ambition, assertion, pushing to one's outer limits. Sophie looks back up at Claire, their eyes meeting. Claire cracks a smile. "Man, is that eerie or what?"

Sophie shrugs. "Tarot cards can have so many different meanings, and you could apply them all to your life if you really tried,"

Claire laughs. "Sure, that's what you always say after-and I remind you-you ask for a tarot reading!" Sophie grins as Claire picks the card back up. "Does that answer your question?" Sophie thinks for a moment before replying.

"Yeah, it does."
