It took death for Jia to realize that death was an abstraction to vampires. She saw it in the way they moved through the world. She saw it in the way Venandi’s pushed themselves into an inch of their life they’d never use. She saw it in the way Clements rotated through identities, picking and choosing what combination of traits they wanted in their “next life.”
Inside the leylines, it was all a game for them. Death wasn’t permanent –not in the way it used to be. It wasn’t real for them the same way it’d become real for him.
