A smile. Tsukasa was captured by the unique appearance of it. He hasn't seen one… ever. Then he noticed the other person causing that smile.
Yodaka Jun was leaning against the lockers as another man kissed his neck.
A snap of a camera brought Tsukasa to the present moment.
Yodaka’s head snapped towards him and the nosy journalist behind him. The other man all but jumped away, almost to the other side of the room.
Tsukasa felt a gush of wind behind him and the gold Olympic skater rushed past him and onto the ice. The journalist wasn't used to skating and it was easy for both Jun and Tsukasa to catch up. Once they stood in the middle of the ice, Tsukasa heard the word “deal.” He turned his searching eyes to the journalist.
“I will delete the picture and forget I ever saw it if you can jump a quintuple axel”
Tsukasa's mind didn't quite register the meaning of those words yet when he caught Jun's wrist. “Don't do it.”
To his surprise Jun didn't move, his eyes were fixed on the point their skin met. “Stay out of it.” He growled and moved to the other side of the ice to have enough time to gain the necessary speed.
Tsukasa's eyes found Hitomi, who was ushering the children away, clearing the ice rink. Smart decision, Tsukasa thought.
Jun in the meantime didn’t move. He stood at the edge of the ice with his eyes closed, his fingers and wrists twitched. Tsukasa wondered if he imagined how the jump was going to feel on his body, what to do and when.
When Jun's eyes opened Tsukasa flinched out of his way. The Olympic’s body moved as soon or maybe even before he opened his eyes as if he didn't want to forget the imagined memory of the impossible jump.
Jun gained speed so quickly it felt like too much, too fast for any jump. And once he reached the middle of the rink his skates bit and left the ice. The stadium collectively gasped and held its breath while they counted. One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
F-
Four and a half turns before the tip of his skate touched the ice, his arms moved like a ribbon in a broken mixer.
He couldn’t control his rotation. Jun’s body quickly moved towards the ice. He managed to place a hand between his falling body and the hard surface, but he was falling so quickly and with such force it was no good. The saving hand was pushed to the side and his body hit the ice hard, his knees first, followed by his hip, ribs, shoulders…
Jun’s head hit the ice last with a sickening crack. The speed of his skating pushed his seemingly lifeless body forward leaving a smear of blood freezing to the ice below it.
Again Tsukasa's body moved before he could command it. In the short moment between raising his leg and pushing himself off towards the injured athlete his eyes found Hitomi, already fumbling with her phone, Inori, gasping and covering her mouth with her hands, tears already filling her eyes, Hikaru, staring at her coach's body without moving a muscle as if her entire world just broke, Rioh, despite his hate towards Jun stood panting with his hands on the railing as if he was ready to jump in and help if the railing wasn’t so high or Hitomi didn't block the entrance.
Tsukasa quickly skated towards the other athlete. “Jun?” He called his name, his hands hovered just above his shoulders, worried he might do more harm than good. “Blankets!” Tsukasa called, “and bandages!” He had no idea what he was doing, all he knew was that the ice was cold and he didn't want Jun to lose any heat if he could help it, and he had to stop the bleeding or at least try.
Luckily the ambulance came quickly and soon the only thing that stayed was the blood already frozen to the ice.
