Chapter Text
Once in the past before the modern world, the capitals existed alongside their masters, working side by side maintaining the people's needs.
The capitols would keep record and act as their countries advisors and secretaries, alerting them of conflicts and internal issues and also being hosts to their foreign neighbors while their masters dealt with the protection and foreign trade of their land.
As new dawns rose, trouble began to stir. How it started was lost to time, but the end was all the same, both sides fell into conflict and tensions bloomed.
During the darkest night under the first quarter, all capitols came together with only their most loyal mortal helpers to meet at a secret hideaway…..
_____________
In the moonlight gloom came several hooded figures, all surrounding a stone table in the woods.
One figure stood on a podium addressing the gathering.
"It's time" they whispered, the words piercing the ambience of the forest.
"Are you sure this is a good idea? To just... Sever bonds with THEM- would this even work?" A young voice hushed, uneasy and worried
"I agree with Irini, would this work? It seems too ambitious..." an older male remarked, his voice firm yet uncertain.
Immediately a hushed murmur spread through the small crowd. All speaking whispers of unease. They were silenced by the head figure raising their hand.
"I understand how ludicrous this plan is but please bear with me," they snapped their fingers at the small group of children
"Bring me the script my child"
A small kid came up to the front handing the scroll before scurrying back.
The leader unfurled the scroll, reading its contents with a critic's eye then setting the paper down in front.
They sighed, voice tired "For many years we toiled away under nights shadow preparing this final act....we are far too late to doubt it now especially with the most crucial step coming to fruition"
The leader lightly tapped on the paper in front of them, drawing the gathering's eyes to it.
"Thanks to our collective efforts THEY have already begun to doubt our existence, all we need to do is stage our last ‘breath’ and let our future kin carry out the next phase" the leader nodded to a group of small children all draped in inconspicuous hoods.
Said children looked up to the group hearing themselves addressed, they all nodded stiffly before going back to quietly talking among each other.
An older lady spoke up from the table, voice melodious and silky “if this plan were to succeed Lady Delphi, then how would our future kin go on? By severing our ties and existence from THEM then our successors would become nothing more than ghosts to the world”
Ripples of agreement spread through the crowd. If their plan does succeed, then what would become of their heirs? How would they continue their service without the backing of their masters? When the noise died down Delphi spoke again.
“That job would fall onto our loyal servants, they will carry out our word and act as the middle ground between ourselves and THEM”
“So you're saying that we're creating a secret network under our own master's eyes?”
“In short yes”
“This would mean we’d have to carry the burden of keeping not only the masters existence but also our own a secret from the world and THEMSELVES”
Delphi sighed
“It will be a tremendous amount of work but once we establish ourselves under their shadow then our kin and theirs will have an easier time and that burden won’t be so heavy”
Silence fell once again. Many contemplated and some were already writing down people to delegate their work to. Irini inhaled deeply, getting up and bringing the attention to herself.
“The night is coming to an end, we mustn’t dawdle more- are we all in favor?”
There was a chorus of agreement that spread throughout the clearing. Delphi cleared her throat then motioned for Irini to sit down again
“Time is of the essence we all know our roles so now we must part, we were never here”
They all parted their ways, some on their horses and others on foot. All fled the clearing and left no trace.
…
…
…
“Nicoooo is that all?” a childish voice whined
“Yes Mi Paloma,” an older male voice chuckled.
2 siblings sat on a bed by the window, soft moonlight illuminating the space. A young girl with dark brown hair and chestnut eyes looked up where she was sitting on the lap of her older brother. His face is the picture of calm, eyes dark brown and hair a sleek black. His skin noticeably tanner then his younger sister, proof of days spent in the harsh sun. He was holding a worn book in his hands, the cover decorated with engraved details.
The young girl shifted in her place, a look of discomfort present. The elder brother noticed this, face shifting to concern. Letting the book fall to the side he shifted his position to accommodate his sister.
“Mariana? Are you alright?”
She shifted again, turning to hug her brother. As she shifted the blanket on her fell off, exposing a set of downy grey-brown wings. They twitched and flapped a few times before the brother set a hand on them, bringing the movements to a stop.
“They feel itchy and my head feathers feel weird,” she protested. bumping her head into his chest. Nicolas cooed, hands shifting to run through the fluffy feathers. “I know mija, it will fade as we take care of them” The brother looked out the window, noting the time.
“Its a little past your bedtime and you got a big day tomorrow so lets get you to sleep”
As the brother shifted, Mariana spoke up again.
“Do I have to be called ‘Sacramento’ when I take over? It sounds lame”
Nicolas laughed.
“you don’t need to be called that all the time, that's just identification for official work"
He moved himself out of the bed and tucked Mari back in, he gave a small kiss on her forehead before moving to close the door to her room.
“Good night Mi Corazon, sleep well”
She yawned, voice drowsy as she buried herself further into the blankets.
“Buenas Noches hermano”
Nicolas smiled softly, before turning away, shutting the door.
The door closed with a soft ‘click’.
