Work Text:
Thunder rumbled outside for about the eightieth time since it started raining 3 hours ago. The rain had started off nice, a peaceful rain, the ones you can walk through without getting wet but is falling just fast enough you can’t stay outside for maybe more than 30 minutes, but enough to where you can sit and enjoy the rainy atmosphere and the distant rolls of thunder overhead. Now? Pouring. Honestly, that’s a generous word considering just how intensely it had started raining 20 minutes ago. Thunder rumbled again, a little louder compared to the distant ones earlier, as if telling anyone who had the misfortune of being stuck outside, ‘I’m not done just yet and you’re not making it to your destination without getting soaked, teehee.’
And unfortunately for Luca and a few other students on campus that had gotten caught in the downpour on there way to and from buildings, his bangs were slightly plastered to his forehead and his jean jacket and hoodie were nearly damp as he ran from the building he’d just finished his last class in towards the library.
He quickly pulled open the door, ducking inside as lightning flickered and thunder rolled again, sighing softly in relief at the shelter. “All this because I need a textbook.” He thought aloud to himself, hands on his knees as he huffed slightly, trying to catch his breath. He was also now regretting not buying an umbrella when he’d been at the convenience store during his lunch break. As he pushed himself to stand back up straight, his eyes widened a bit in surprise as he saw a familiar figure sitting at one of the long tables in the back end of the library, laptop open, earbuds in, a pencil in hand and scribbling away diligently into his notebook. But with the shadow of the raindrops on the windows casting into the library and on the raven-haired male, Luca felt like he was in some sort of cliche novel.
With a smirk, Luca carefully snuck around the bookcases, making sure to step carefully and quietly. Thankfully, no one else was in the library so his cover couldn’t be blown. With stealth, he eventually made it to the back of the library, thunder rumbling again as he approached the back of the chair, raising his hands up and preparing himself.
The ravenette was humming softly to himself, absorbed in his programming window and code he had up on his screen, adjusting his glasses with a soft sigh as he looked at the error line code for about the hundredth time. He was getting a little frustrated with it, and it was starting to drive him nuts. “It doesn’t make any sense, I followed every parameter…” He murmured to himself, picking up his to-go coffee cup and taking a sip again.
Suddenly, he felt a breath of warm air against his ear, and a low growl of the voice. “Is it because you have phantom pain?” Said voice creepy in tone and honestly really unsettling. The sensation mixed with the words made Shu physically jumped in his seat with a slight gasp of start, feeling his heartbeat quicken instantly as he pulled out one of his earbuds and turned around to see what was behind him.
But upon seeing the slightly damp blonde hunched over now and laughing his ahh off, he scowled, blush creeping onto his cheeks. “What the heck?! You scared the crud out of me!” He half shouted, then covered his mouth slightly with his hand as he remembered where he was. “And in the library, no less!” He added on, shouting in a whisper.
After another five seconds of laughing, Luca calmed himself down enough to stand back up straight and talk. “S-sorry,” He said between laughs. “I couldn’t help it. You looked so frustrated, I figured you needed a laugh!” He smiled at the ravenette, eyes sparkling despite the gloomy state of the library thanks to the storm outside. “And relax, no one is in here. It’s just you and me.”
Shu sighed after a second, his shoulders relaxing and a small smile creeping up on his lips. “You’re lucky I love you, Kaneshiro.” He rolled his eyes playfully, taking his other earbud and turning to face Luca. “What’re you even doing here anyways? Don’t you have class?”
Luca smiled faintly at the first part, shaking his head with a small hum of refutation. “I got let out early. And they canceled my last class since the walkway into the building got flooded. Go figures, that’s what they get for building it at the bottom of a hill.” He sighed, taking off his bag and setting it on the chair next to Shu’s before leaning down and giving his boyfriend a small peck on the lips. “What’re you doing here in the library? It’s your lunch period, isn’t it?”
Shu nodded. “I already ate, don’t worry.” He confirmed, blushing a bit at the kiss but doing so back, before pulling away and continuing to speak. “I’m trying to figure out why I got this error on my homework assignment for Database Systems.”
Luca glanced at the laptop, grimacing a bit. He wasn’t very fond of code. He understood it, since they had gone over a little in some of his engineering classes last year, but not enough to know what the hell was on Shu’s screen right now. He then looked back to Shu, shrugging. “You’ll figure it out, don’t be so hard on yourself.” He reassured him with a small smile. “You’re the top Computer Science student Shu Yamino! Maybe you just need to take a break for a bit?”
Shu regarded Luca’s words, sighing softly and looking back over at his screen. Maybe a break would be a good idea. I’ve been looking at this for half an hour. He thought to himself before nodding, putting his finger on the trackpad of the laptop and tapping to minimize the coding software. “You’re right. A break sounds nice.” He agreed, smiling faintly, looking back at Luca.
The blonde smiled triumphantly. Phase one, complete. “Well,” Luca said, stretching his arms behind his head. “I need to grab a book for one of my classes. Want to help me find it Mr. Library Assistant~?” He teased, using the old nickname from Shu’s past job back when they were in high school.
The ravenette rolled his eyes, pushing his chair back as he stood up. “You’re never gonna let go of that, are you?” He sighed, but couldn’t help the small smile he had.
The two walked together down the aisles, Shu helping Luca look for the book he needed. As they walked, they engaged in some small conversational talk. Some of which… Shu didn’t want to talk about, but Luca has asked so many times, he felt bad for not answering.
“So, which restaurant did you want to go to this year for your birthday?”
Every year, without fail, Luca took Shu to a restaurant of his choice for his birthday. It was always nice, Luca would pick him up on his motorcycle (as long as it wasn’t raining) and they’d enjoy a nice dinner together and then Luca would take Shu home and that was that.
But this year? Shu didn’t want to do all that. It was nice, yes, but the ravenette wanted to do something special for their first year together as a couple. After a second of thought, Shu stopped in the middle of the aisle. Luca noticed Shu stopped, stopping a second after and turning to look at Shu, a bit confused.
“Can we… do something else this year?” Shu asked awkwardly, looking off to the side.
Luca thought about it a moment before taking a small step forwards, grabbing Shu’s hand. “Just the two of us still… right?” He asked, pouting a bit. He was thinking Shu wanted to have an actual party and well.. Luca didn’t want to do that, in all honesty (since he already had plans for one the day before his actual birthday that he’d been working on the last week).
Shu felt his heart clench. God he’s so cute when he does that. He thought to himself, before smiling faintly and nodding. “I was just thinking maybe we could… sit at your dorm and just hang out. Watch a movie… or something.” He said. “Maybe go for a bike ride later in the evening after traffic settles, if it’s not raining again.”
Luca smiled faintly, before nodding. “God I love you.” He laughed, before leaning forward and capturing Shu in another soft kiss that made the other blush. “We'll do whatever you want. It’s your day, after all.”
After a second they pulled away, both smiling and laughing softly as they leaned their foreheads against one another. If either boy had any doubts in their mind about the future, they were all washed away in that moment.
