Work Text:
Luca and Shu both looked at the sopping wet kitten and puppy that were in the box, the light rain gently falling onto their fur and coating it with tiny droplets of water that almost made the animals look like they were glittering.
Luca sighed, rubbing the back of his neck after adjusting his hood. “Well… we can’t just leave them.” he pointed out, looking over at his boyfriend.
The raven haired male closed his eyes for a second, grimacing. He hated that Luca was right. “But… I’m pretty sure our landlord might kill us, Luca.” He tried to argue, looking over at the blonde.
“But look at them!” Luca pouted, walking over to the box, out from under Shu’s umbrella and petting both the dog and cat. “Look at their faces, Shu!” He added, picking up the puppy first and holding it out towards Shu. “How can you say no to that face?!”
Shu looked between Luca, the cat, and the dog. And funnily enough, the golden retriever puppy and Luca were almost making a similar pouting expression. Shu felt his heart skip a beat and constrict. So cute... He thought to himself, his grip on the umbrella tightening a bit as he held himself back from pinching Luca’s cheeks then and there.
How could one guy be so cute? Shu had no clue, but all he knew was he had an inexplicable urge to squish the blonde’s cheeks.
After a second, Shu spoke up again and gently cleared his throat. “How the heck are we going to sneak a puppy and a kitten into the apartment, though?” Shu pointed out, looking at Luca. “Give me one good idea and I will possibly consider it.” He added, crossing one arm.
He didn’t want to not take the animals home. But he uh, also didn’t want to have to lose money on the deposit or get kicked out when him and Luca already had 2 strikes with the landlord. If you’re wondering why… let’s just say they had already gotten some noise complaints.
Luca thought about it a minute before snapping his fingers. “How about we go buy one of those cheap baby strollers and a blanket and just, you know, hide them in it?” He suggested with a shrug and a faint smile. “Surely nobody will think twice about it, right?”
The ravenette took a second before chuckling softly. “Considering we’re… ya know. I don’t think that will work.” He pointed out, looking between himself and Luca. The blonde seemed confused at first, opening his mouth to ask what Shu meant. Then it hit and Luca blushed a bit.
“My bad.” He laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck, “Well… we can’t just leave them out here.” He said again, kneeling back down and putting the puppy back. “It’s supposed to rain pretty hard tonight, isn’t it?”
Shu frowned. He knew Luca was right, but he couldn’t help but still be worried about sneaking in pets to their building. But at the same time, Shu didn’t like the idea of leaving the two young animals out in a typhoon. Sure, it was only supposed to rain. But still…
He sighed, crouching down and adjusting the umbrella to better cover the two young animals and looking at them. Sure enough, no collars. And in some scraggly Japanese writing the box just said ‘Free’. The fact someone had left the two animals out to fend for themselves…
He thought about it a moment before using his free hand to gently pick up the golden retriever.
“Grab the other one and let’s go, it’s getting cold out here.” He told Luca, standing back up and adjusting the umbrella to cover both Luca and the kitten.
Luca smiled before nodding, leaning over and picking up the small all-black kitten, that fit in the palms of both hands. He put the kitten on his shoulder, to which the small creature mewled softly and crawled under and into Luca’s hoodie, shivering slightly.
Shu watched the scene with fascination, blushing a bit. It was probably the cutest thing he’d seen all week, Luca laughing softly as a small animal cuddled into his hoodie for warmth. His heart was hurting again, and in the best way possible. So. Freaking. Cute.
He was pulled out of his thoughts as Luca snapped his fingers in front of Shu’s face. “Earth to Yamino~” He heard the blonde’s voice.
Shu blinked a few times, shaking his head and looking at Luca. “Sorry,” He apologized. “I was thinking about something. What were you saying?”
Luca held the kitten up with his one hand. “The puppy seems like it’s trying to jump out of your hands.” He pointed out with a chuckle. “Since your hands are a tad smaller, how about you hold the cat and I’ll hold the rascal?” He suggested, smiling gently.
Shu frowned, looking down at the pup in his hands which indeed did not seem happy to be with him. After a second he nodded, him and Luca switching animals, Shu now holding the kitten and Luca the puppy. A fitting match, in all honesty, as if the animals mirrored themselves.
Shu looked at the cat, gently scratching its head. The cat seemed even more comfortable with Shu, climbing up the ravenette’s jacket and lying down on his shoulder, purring even louder than it had with Luca. The ravenette smiled faintly, scratching the top of the kitten’s head.
Luca watched how the kitten interacted with the ravenette, smiling faintly and thinking how the cat kind of reminded him of the other male, the kitten curling up and just closing its eyes. And similar to Shu, Luca couldn’t help but notice the uncanny resemblance. It reminded him of how sometimes when Shu came home from errands/work, he would just curl up on the couch and pass out in mere seconds. Cute… He thought to himself.
After a second he cleared his throat, blushing a bit. “Alright, let’s get going before these guys get cold.”
With that, the two began walking home. Somehow, someway, the two ended up being able to sneak the animals into their apartment building and past their neighbors without anyone seeing them. They even managed to grab their mail too, thankfully.
As Shu closed the door behind himself, he tried to pick the kitten up off his shoulder, but the creature didn’t even budge, and seemed reluctant to do so. The ravenette sighed, frowning. “Come on, you have to get down.” He said to the cat, trying to gently pry it off his jacket.
Luca ended up having to help Shu coax the kitten off his shoulder, and then the two dried off the kitten and pup with towels and a blow dryer, Shu gently brushing out their fur with his nails to make sure their coats didn’t get tangled. Once all was said and done and they fed and gave water to the animals, Shu ended up being the one to make the call to the vet while Luca took care of them.
As Luca was in the kitchen, cleaning dishes in the sink, scrubbing away at the pan gently, he couldn’t help look over at Shu. He found himself smiling faintly. The way Shu looked, his feet tucked under him as he leaned against the arm of the couch, reminded Luca of something.
If he had ears and a tail… He thought to himself, thinking about the possibility, and would probably have his tail flicking back and forth right now, with ears drawn back since Shu had a look of slight disappointment on his face.
Once again. An uncanny resemblance.
How’d I get so dang lucky to get such a good looking and adorable boyfriend? He sighed softly in his thoughts, unable to help the slight blush on his cheeks.
As Shu got off the phone, he let out a small sigh, rubbing his neck. “Well, there’s good news and bad news.” He said, getting up from the couch and heading to the kitchen, glancing down seeing the kitten and pup eating some cooked unseasoned chicken Luca had made and cut up for them, just using two of the regular bowls they had. He’s like an actual dad. Shu thought to himself, smiling.
Luca looked over as he finished washing the pan he’d used, setting it on the drying rack. “What’s the bad news?” He asked with a small frown, grabbing a paper towel and drying his hands off then wiping some residual water off the counter.
Shu stopped beside Luca, leaning against the counter. “We have to keep them at our place for another day.” He sighed. “But on the bright side, the vet agreed to do a free scan to see if they’re chipped and check to see if they have their shots.”
Luca nodded after a second, frowning and glancing over at the small golden retriever puppy and black kitten. He pouted at the thought of them potentially having owners. He wanted to keep them. Shu could tell. But he also knew they sadly just couldn’t.
“I kind of want to keep them though…” The blonde murmured, his fingers clenching on the edge of the counter. “It’d be nice to have some other company around, don’t you think?”
Shu frowned, looking at Luca. He knew bringing the animals home would make him attached, and he couldn’t blame him. But he shook his head. “We can’t do that,” He reminded. “Not while we live in an apartment, at least. They won’t have a good quality of life.” He added.
Luca pouted further, looking at Shu with puppy dog eyes. “What if they don’t have owners, huh? What do we do then?” He asked, still clearly not wanting to give up the idea of keeping them.
Yeah, Shu had a feeling Luca would get attached. He couldn’t help but sigh softly.
The ravenette shook his head again, hating to be the bad guy but knowing he didn’t have a choice either or Luca would never let this go. “We’ll just have to give them to a nice shelter so they can get adopted into good families… I’m sorry, Luca.” He murmured.
Seeing the disappointed look on his boyfriend’s face, he put a hand on the blonde’s shoulder, rubbing it gently as a comforting gesture. “I’m sorry Luca… I know you’ve been wanting a pet forever, but you know we can’t keep them.” He added.
Seeing the disappointed look on his boyfriend’s face, he put a hand on the blonde’s shoulder, rubbing it gently as a comforting gesture. “I’m really am sorry… I know you’ve been wanting a pet forever, but you know we can’t keep them.” He said softly, looking up at Luca’s eyes.
There was a moment of silence, Luca sulking and Shu trying to wordlessly comfort him. After a moment Shu spoke up again, clearing his throat. “How about this,” He started off, letting go of Luca’s shoulder which in turn made the other look at his boyfriend. “When you and I get a better apartment, or our own place together like an actual house… we can get a dog and a cat.”
The mafia boss perked up a bit, and Shu could swear that if Luca had dog ears and a tail, they’d be pointed upwards and the tail would be wagging wildly. It honestly made him want to squish Luca’s cheeks even more than he already did.
Luca regarded Shu and his statement carefully, frowning. “You promise…?” He said softly, sounding almost like a child, pouting a little still but not as much as a moment ago.
God he’s so cute. Shu thought for the N-th time today.
Shu chuckled, nodding. He stepped forward, grabbing both of Luca’s hands, intertwining their fingers for the respective hand, squeezing them gently as he looked up at him. Luca and Shu stood there for a moment, swinging their arms back and forth, enjoying one another’s presence.
“I promised we would face it all together… and that I would make sure you were happy. After we spent thousands of miles, practically poles apart, I refuse to let something as small as a cruddy landlord make you feel bad.” He said, his voice dropping to a soft yet serious tone.
Luca looked down, feeling his shoulders relax at his boyfriend’s words. He smiled faintly before nodding, leaning forward and resting his forehead against Shu’s chest. Without the security of the ravenette’s loving arms… He didn’t think he’d be able to leave home the way he did. “Then… it’s a deal: when we get our own place, that’s not an apartment, we will get our own pets.” Luca muttered against Shu’s chest, tightening his fingers around the ravenette’s and just standing there, enjoying the feeling of Shu’s warm embrace.
Shu chuckled softly, not able to help himself as he let go with one hand then reached up and ruffled Luca’s hair. “Exactly.” He nodded. “It’s a promise.” He looked down at Luca leaning on him, feeling his chest swell with thankfulness that he and Luca were able to live together.
There was a bark that pulled the two out of their trance-like state. both males looking over to see the puppy and kitten sitting side by side, slightly tilting their head at the two. As if asking them, like curious kids, what they were doing.
Luca chuckled faintly, letting go of Shu’s one hand. “Don’t worry, guys. Dad and I are just discussing the divorce.” He joked, to which earned him a pinch on the waist from Shu.
The ravenette rolled his eyes at Luca’s words after punching his shoulder, gently shoving him too. “I told you not to call me that.” He sighed, shaking his head.
Luca chuckled faintly, pushing Shu’s hand away whenever he pinched his side. “H-hey! Sorry, I can’t help it.” He apologized, before looking back at Shu. “But I won’t say it again, sorry.” He added, chuckling softly again.
The ravenette then leaned forward and planted a small quick kiss onto Luca’s soft lips, a smack sound quietly emanating as they pulled away from one another. Thunder rumbled faintly outside, Shu cupping the side of Luca’s cheek, gently rubbing his thumb back and forth on his jaw.
“It’s a promise,” Shu reiterated. “I’ll make sure you get to have a golden and a black cat of your very own. I swear it.”
