Work Text:
Suletta held Miorine’s hand tentatively, cautiously, as though she wasn't sure her bride wanted it. And then Miorine grasped more firmly, so Suletta did too. She let herself smile, feeling their fingers twine together.
“Suletta, I…”
“I know. It's okay.” She squeezed her lover's hand a little. “There's something I want to show you, Miorine.” Silver met blue. “Close your eyes with me.” Miorine shook her head. “Miorine-”
“No. I don’t want to. I- I don’t want to have to see what I did to you. Not again.”
“Miorine, please. Just do it.” When she refused again, Suletta gave her another squeeze, brought Miorine’s hand up to her lips for a kiss. “It’s not going to hurt, I’m… I’m not going to do what you think. I promise.” That calmed her down a little, Suletta promising.
“Okay.” Her bride took a slow, shaky breath, and closed her eyes. Suletta did too, and when they both opened, the string was there. The little red string that had once run between both of their hearts now dangled limply on the floor between them, frayed on both ends where it had been cut in two. “I’m sorry,” Miorine whispered.
“I know,” she repeated. “It’s okay.” Suletta took Miorine’s string in her other hand, rolled the end of it between index finger and thumb, looking down at it. Miorine’s hand gripped hers. “I’m… not going to try and tie us back together, I promise. I know what happens when people try that.”
“It never ends well,” Miorine quietly agreed. She’d heard the stories too. Of course she had, everyone had. Everyone heard those cautionary bedside tales, and yet some still tried it, thinking they would be different. They never were.
“Yeah.” She brought her hand down to where her own string laid, brushed the ends together to feel the tingle, the little electric shock. The warning. “You… you gave me the freedom to live my life however I wanted,” Suletta said, giving Miorine a smile that she hoped came across as appreciative, kissing her bride’s end of the string afterwards. “I’m unbound from the universe’s will now, unbound from you, unbound from those binding promises I made to you, way back when. I’m free, just like you wanted. And now I’m using that freedom to come back to you.”
“... why? You don’t have to love me anymore. I made sure of that.” Suletta laughed, tears coming to her eyes, and she yanked Miorine towards her, released her end of the string of fate to put her arm around the woman she still wanted to be with, still holding her hand.
“Because I don't need the universe to make me love you. I can do that all on my own.”
